Question about the DS port of FFIII?

When you save your game, a timer is displayed showing how long you've been playing. Does the timer continue to go up even if the system is in sleep mode? I've always thought having those silly Play Time timers being accurate was important, so I don't want to put it in sleep mode and have the timer go up.
