PAL SNES Modding Tips

Hello everyone, I'm brand new to the modding scene. Inspired by Ikari_01 and CustomNESGuy .

I'm hopefully going to turn an ebay bought SNES unit into a ikari_01 "switchless mod", megaman themed console.

I just wondered if you more experienced modders could help me along the way. I'd really appreciate some info regarding the following questions:

1. What type of paint should I use ?

I've read that lightly sanding the unit then applying 'automotive' paint and then a clear coat produces a quality finish like so: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sVofoLKbQw8

I don't have access to automotive paint, but i'm hoping spray paint can provide similar results and if so what type ?

2. As the 'switchless mod' will allow me to play imported NTSC carts, I'll need to widen the PAL SNES cart slot. I don't want to just slash the console to pieces with a hacksaw. Through more research I found that a dremel could do the job, but I don't want to spend a significant sum of money buying a power tool just to widen the slot by a few mililimeters. Is it possible to buy a dremel tip to add to a regular drill ?

3. This refers back to the link provided in the first question. How do you keep the nintendo text and logo on the exterior ? It would be impossible to mask it off with tape

  • for paint if you can't get the pricey paint and are just going to get spray paint make sure you get kind that bonds to plastic. and Yes a light sanding does help the paint adhere better. basically it creates micro groves in the plastic /\/\/\/\/\ rather than a smooth ______, so there is more surface area for the paint to stick to and doesn't run off. I would recommend sanding, then do a base primer color (You want your primer color to be opposite of your final color on the color wheel. example if you're going to paint it blue use orange as a primer color. the reason why is so that when you apply your color you'll know when you've completely painted it as the orange wont show. make sure you get primer as it is designed to be painted over with another color.) do another light sand, add your color then add a clear coat. there are different types of clear coat. matte, semi-gloss, and high gloss are the main ones. a matte finish is a dull finish that wont shine very much and high gloss is really shiny. the clear coat also acts as a protective barrier to keep the paint from scratching.

I don't know about any of the other mod stuff as I have not yet done it but I do paint things often. If it's something you really want to get into. I recommend getting a gravity feed airbrush. they're a great size for painting and modding consoles and electronic chassis.
  • Dremel tools are surprisingly inexpensive. I think I got mine, the smallest one they make, at a wal-mart for $20. I used it on an NES and the only thing I would say is use clamps and some scrap wood to make a guide for what you want to cut. Cutting plastic with those things is pretty difficult free-hand.
