Help writing a curriculum vitae

I want to apply for a job in a fertility center that is looking to hire, and according to a brief exchange o the phone with a person from there, I may be able to apply. I want to hear some advise from you, to write my CV: what should I do, what should I avoid, etc. How to make my CV stand out positively... I know there are lots of webpages with recommendations, but if you know something I can use, that has helped you get the job (in terms of "marketing" yourself), it'd be great to hear it.

For example, I read that there's a tendency of women to choose CV's of men that include a photo (and inversely, if it's a woman that sends the photo, it affects negatively). Luckily, I got to know that the one in charge of selecting applicants is female. Oh, also, if you have some advise for the interview, it'd be cool to hear.

  • I've never heard of supplying a picture with a CV/resume, though I'm sure it happens some places.

The best advice I know is to tailor the document for each employer.

Be sure to gear your explanations of past experience and your educational background to the specific position.

Also, the old "objective" line has fallen out of fashion because, duh, everybody's "objective" is to have a job and earn money Painting around that with a bunch of flowery bullshit has finally be perceived as a waste of space.

And it goes without saying that typos and grammatical errors get your CV thrown in the trash.

If you are talking to an actual person at this point, and not just getting heaped in the paperwork pile, then your biggest asset is face-to-face networking.

The CV is way less important than the interview, especially if you get them out for coffee, preemptively.

For the interview, make sure you know about their company ahead of time, as well as the position, itself.

Don't go in empty-handed in terms of research.

The key thing is to be yourself and just take it easy.

If you try too hard to point out your strengths, you'll come off as asshole. Just express a lot of interest in the parts of the job you find interesting, and give them some background on how you are qualified.
