3.8mm game screwdriver bits

I've bought a set of these before - one was 3.8mm, for (primarily) NES games, the other was 4.5mm, for some other stuff (Genesis) ...

It seemed to work well for the first few games.  After about 5 games, it was pretty stripped and I had to press really hard to get it to move the screws.  A few months passed, and I bought a different one.  It was a 3.8mm bit, but it was larger (in diameter) than the previous one I had.  It was such a tight fit to get it inside the nes cart, and even harder to get it out.  Might it have been a 4.5mm bit?  I didn't think that would fit, I've assumed it was just a crappy 3.8mm bit.

Seeing as how these bits are kind of expensive ($5 a pop, really?), I don't want to invest in one if it's only going to last me 10 or 15 games before being useless.   I wouldn't mind buying one if it's good quality.  Any suggestions?

  • I got a set off electricquarter over 2 years ago and they have taken apart well over 1000+ games & systems. I was going to recommend them, but I just checked out their feedback and it looks like they vanished off ebay around Nov '11 with some negative feedback.

Mine are the black type, but I have heard people here rave about the chrome bits. I'm sure somebody can help with a current source, as I wouldn't mind having a backup set.
  • They're usually included in large screwdriver bit sets. ALthough unless you use screwdrivers often you might not want to spend >30$ on a kit.

You could ask whether they have them at a local game store, otherwise you'll be paying roughly 6$ for a set on eBay.

I have a 3.8mm and 4.5mm set aswell. They're branded NEX USA and they work fine.
  • I wish I remembered where I purchased mine at, but ive taken apart probably a couple thousand with mine and its still going strong!
  • I ordered mine from: http://www.lukiegames.com/3-8-mm-security-bit.html

I have opened over 300 games using the same chrome bit so far.
  • I have both 3 types. Black shorties I bought in 01'. Chrome shorties that came with a tool kit I bought in 09' and a black long set (for V-boy) I got early this year from a website recommended from others here. Of all three, I like the short black ones I bought all those years ago. Still going strong with hundreds of carts being opened. It is even on my key chain, gets bumped and scratched around all the time. Still works great!
  • I have a set from lukie never had any problems with stripping or anything I've had them for more than a year. The 3.8 had a problem getting into a handful of games but a second on the grinder took care of that.
  • Sorry to bump an older thread, but I just bought a bit and 72 pin from "VideoGameSource" on ebay. Delivery was quick, but the bit is too big for the holes and tears up the plastic a bit when used. I put some goo-gone on the bit to grease it up and help prevent the tearing up of carts, and it worked okay. Don't know if that tip will help anyone else.
