How to fix a PS 1 disc drive

I recieved a free PS one the other day from one of my family members. The playstation turns on and trys to read the disc (it spins and stops and spins and stops), but it seems like the disc spinning mechanism is broken or not turning properly or something (I suppose it could be a disc reader issue, but the actual disc reader appears to be intact and functioning.

My question is: Is there anyone here who knows how to fix a broken disc spinning mechanism or if you all think the problem stems from an alternative issue what do you believe it is and how would I fix it.

If you need video I can post video of the problem in a day or two. Sorry for my lack of technical terms and thanks in advance for the help.

  • Flip it upside down and run it that way...

    if that doesn't work

Buy another used one for less than $10...

and if that is not an option...

Pay somebody for shipping and they will give you one.

PS1's are SOOO available and not worth squat...
  • Just replace the laser assembly. They only cost $7.00 each

  • Love that you suggested to flip it over Beni. I can't tell you how many times I have done that with mine.

OP: have you cleaned the lens? You can get lens paper from any Eye Doctor
  • If it's anything like the PS2 assembly you could try checking the mechanism that moves the laser for debris on the track. I've only messed with one but it would do about the same thing, spin up and try to read then just freeze up and crash. I cleaned the assembly and moved it along the track a few times by hand and it worked perfectly after that. Before it couldn't move the laser to read the disc so it would just bug out.

    Good luck
  • I had a PS1 disk hub (The little round thingie that holds the games) break on me once! I took a hub outta a broken walkman and slid it on the rod that the old one was. Popped the game in, and it worked fine! Now I got a grey-colored hub on my PS1!

If it's the laser, try a simple clean of it. Or....  buy another machine, they're super cheap (Got about 3 at my shop)
  • 3 at the shop? Are you still buying these? I have at least 3 in my room and at least 3 more in the garage. People keep giving them to me. I would LOVE to sell a couple off to ya!
  • clean the laser lens. also try and see if it plays a standard music CD.
