Taking apart sns-001

I just recently starting getting into collecting Nintendo games.  I'm concentrating on NES, SNES, and N64 right now.  I recently bought an snes, controller and 23 games for 90 bucks.  Thought it was a great deal, games included the likes of Megaman X, Battletoads/Double Dragon, Mario All stars...  I figured I could sell the snes and about 5-7 games and make up what I spent.  But anyways...  I guess I'm rambling.

Main Topic Here:

I've watched videos of peoiple taking apart snes and cleaning the connection.  This is an sns-001 and I can't find a video of how to take this one apart.  Ive got the plastic apart, eject button and metal casing off.  The videos show the top part of the connector coming off but I can't figure out how to get this off on mine.  Do the sns-001s connectors come apart like the later models?

  • Yes they do. They should simply lift off in an upward motion. The "legs" lets call them, that have the screw holes in them that mount the board and bottom shielding to the bottom plastic is a good place to start. You should be able to get a fingernail under there to get them to separate. Pinching and wiggling upwards should seperate it as well. Not too much effort should be needed, as it grabs to the board the same way a cart connector holds onto the cart. The two screws are the only real thing keeping it in place when a game is pulled out of the connector. Hope this helps.
  • I'm curious what your serial number is, I have not seen the "APU" board revision yet. The only 1995 board I have is an "RGB". Hopefully these disconnect like the rest do.
  • I took the took the two screws off the sides, but still doesn't seem to want to budge.  I may have edited and posted the picture right after you posted.  If you can see the pic though, unlike the videos I've seen, the metal pieces dont extend to the screws on the side, the screws are just into the plastic piece.  Ive tried wiggling and such... but it didn't seem like it was budging at all, I was afraid I'd break something.

Also on mine I didn't have to take off the controller port connection to remove the metal plate.
  • UN305239884 is the serial
  • It looks like you have one that's soldered to the board. I think the removable connectors are made of metal in the areas where the silver screws go, not plastic.
  • Yeah, the ones I'm used to seeing are made of metal. This board revision must be an exception.
  • Huh, I never knew the snes connectors pulled out. Where's that pesky ' the more you know' star when you need it?

You could try doing it the lazy man's way and take a credit card wrapped in thin cloth and apply some contact cleaner and just wiggle it between the pins. May take a few tries to get it but it works for me.
  • I believe only the early model SNES's had the ability to remove the connector. It might have switched around the same time they took out the cart locking mechanism.
