Donkey Kong Jr. Game & Watch - Can It Be Fixed

I’ve been nostalgic for some of my old childhood games recently, and bought a Donkey Kong Jr Game & Watch on eBay (http://www.ebay.com/itm/280897830292). The aim is to guide Junior to Kong’s cage, where he can grab a swinging key and unlock it. In order to do this you have to time the jump correctly, or you fall. Everything on the game works fine, except the left button doesn’t work when you try and grab the key. It works fine if you mistime the jump, and Junior falls to the ground as expected. It’s only when you time the jump correctly that the left button is non-responsive.
Does anyone know if this is something that can be fixed, or is the game a write-off? I’m sure I could return the game to the seller, but if it’s a fairly simple fix, I’d rather get it working again.
