That's a really good question! I don't remember reading a lot about this in Nintendo Power so I assume it was the very definition of a sleeper. Uninspiring title with kiddy artwork, inspired by a public-domain character (Samson is from the Bible, can't get much more public domain than that) = even though it rocks the chook, it just didn't jump off the shelves and into Xmas stockings.
dude, i just played this game for the first time last night. this game is fun as hell. i can't believe i've never heard of or played this as a kid. i'm so glad i found it.
I got a mint cart/manual for $100 a while back and sold the cart for $68. There was another cart/manual with no pictures that went for only $60 a few weeks ago. I think there are a lot of people that would pay $50+ for this one, though. It's tough to find for sure.
i think the box is worth about $150, whenever cibs pop up (which is rarely) they go for $300+. So if the cart is worth about $75, and even if the manual was worth $75, the box would still be over $150. I bought one of langers boxes, but i didn't pay $175. This is the 5th rarest liscenced title imo to have complete, (SE, F2, FFF AW, CC, then this) boxes or complete ones show up way less frequently that BB2 or even bonks for that matter.
yeah i got a little samson manual with a name markered on the front in good shape for $50, so i would say $50+ maby $75-$80 if its dead mint. and yes the first time i ever played that game (about 2 years ago) it was so fun we ended up playing it all day... GREAT GAME!!!
I was surprised too about the quality of the gameplay. That's not a cheap game at all. I was amazed by the 'mirror moves' battle, really original and ambitious gameplay! Aesthetics is great too in general!
Arseface, maybe you should add Mr.Gimmick in your list, is this right, or PAL only doesn't count?
CC = Chubby Cherub / FFF AW = Family Fun Fitness Atletic World / F2 = Flintstones 2: The Surprise at Dino Peak. You just needed a little logical sense to understand it;-p
Oh, there was three runners on that course, and it seems I only got the Bronze medal.

You could definitely put Mr. Gimmick and Rodland up there with the top tier licensed games. Those are really tough titles to find.
As for the Little Samson manual, I agree with the $50-$60 estimate.
Chubby Cherub cart only would be around $7-$10 (though it seems to get slightly more lately...I saw a couple end in the $12-$15 range, which is somewhat strange). The manual for CC tends to fetch around $30 or so, while the box can fetch a few hundred in decent shape.
Limited release carts would have been sold complete with book, box, cart, and inserts. Often times the purchaser due to shelf space or just plain wastefulness would instantly trash the box, but would keep the manual for instructions. Further in time the instructions would bare no value as the person already knew how to play and they would toss them.
As for rental only games, the opposite is true. Remember going in to Blockbuster or wherever and they had the Box on Display. Well eventually that might get messed up and thrown in the trash, but with those games they had the manuals that they would rent out. People that rented the games would lose the manuals, but the boxes would not be lost as much because they would be sitting on the shelf and never sent to the person.
Those are the reasons why Chubby Cherub has an almost impossible to find box and Flintstones Surprise has an almost impossible to find manual. Of course, you could always dig through the land fills of America. I'm sure somewhere under some nastiness are some decaying Stadium Events Boxes and Manuals.

why is this game so "rare"?
I'd put it in the top 5 most expensive licensed titles, behind Stadium Events and Flintstones 2, and on par with Bonk and Bubble Bobble 2.
EDIT: Slap Chubby Cherub and FFF Athletic World in that list as well. Duh.

and these are licensed?
FFF AW=Family Fun Fitness Athletic World variant
F2=Flintstones 2:Surprise at Dinosaur Peak
chubby cherub
the family fun and fitness version of athletic world
flintstones 2
3 of the highest valued licensed nes games
all very hard to find CIB..
