Posting in Japanese

Lets say there's some info in Japanese that we need a fellow member to translate that Google Translate can't, or a member from another country that would like to join but barely spoke English? Can there be a way to apply the text to our posts? Can it be implemented?

Example:

A member types in some Japanese in their posting form, it comes out okay. even when he/she previews it:

But, when saving it and appling it to the post, it comes out like this:

Now, I know that my Japanese is terrible, but you get the idea. Everything is replaced with "?" and "*". The only work-around I found was to make a image file of the text and post up the image, but that might be complicated/tedious to most posters.

It's just a suggestion, nothing fancy or desired by many, so I can understand if this isn't something that's top-priority (cuz seriously, it isn't, I might be the only person wondering about this. lol), but thought it would be something to think about at least.

  • That's a good idea but i doubt that feature would get much use, guess it wouldn't hurt to have it there though.
  • you could save the text to a file and attach the file to the thread?

That's an idea. Be hard to explain something specifically to a member or to quote something in a special circumstance I would guess, but that should work for now. Either that, or create an image of the text like I mentioned before.

  • Something like pastebin should support japanese and you could then just provide the link
  • I agree that support for this would be great. Not sure how easy it would be to code it in these boards (shift_JIS or UTF-8 support?), but there have been instances when I wished the site supported Japanese text input.
  • I agree with ookii. It'd be nice to have but it's no priority in any sense. I think it would be particularly useful for a famicom database if that ever happens. Until then, pastebin.ubuntu.com
  • Also realize that not all users will be able to read it; In windows at least you need to install language packs (unless they're included by default now). Most linux distros and OSX have the character sets by default.

Yeah, I think's it's all pre-packed/defaulted on most newer machines. There is some languages that you might still need to install packs, but I think Japanese is already standard. Unless you use like Windows 95 or something. lol

  • It is pre-packed in Windows 7. I'm pretty sure I had to install the Asian language pack in Vista. Global IME still needs to be set up, but it is built into the OS in Vista and Windows 7 and can be set through keyboard setup. The only thing with Windows 7 is that I needed the Ultimate version to change the system locale so I could see the text in Japanese software prompts, but that has nothing to do with the web.
  • ^ I was wondering if changing the locale did anything, but I guess that's only for the OS, not the web. I did have to change it to play a PC game called Vanguard Princess once... made all my "/" marks into "?" so navigating folders and such was weird.
  • This is occasionally useful for posting the names of famicom carts because the translated names are often in dispute or unclear. Famicom carts aren't discussed all that often here though anyway.
  • I think this issue does need to be addressed at some point, but with Chinese as well. I have purchased games on here from people in the past and when I send them my shipping address, they only see ?????, which obviously causes a problem. This usually leads me to giving the seller a romanized version of my address, but that causes a few problems on my end:

    1) Slower delivery time

    2) Once a package was returned to the sender due to this

Now I know this feature wouldn't have use for many people, but it seems like something that should be addressd.
