Transferring data from broken ps3?

I'm trying to transfer the data on my ps3 slim to my new super slim. the problem is my broken slim will not turn on at all and I have to transfer the data FROM the old ps3 to the new. Unfortunately it will not let me retreive the data using the super slim so what the hell do I do?

Also, if anyone needs to know what my ps3 is doing, i try to turn it on and the light goes green but then immideiately turns red and beeps off.

  • Nothing, you can't do anything, that's the biggest downfall of the PS3 (aside from their life expectancy). If you can't turn on the PS3, your data is gone for good. It sucks big time, I've had it happen to me, I tried many things, spent hours looking but nothing. Sorry to hear that.
  • I'm sure there's some tool that will do that. I'd take out the drives and hook them both to a PC and see what software is available. I think there's some Linux software that will just do a direct copy of a drive, but that may not work for your needs since they're probably different sizes and such.

ETA: Take the HDD out, put it in the working PS3. Transfer data to a USB. Then replace the drive and copy it from the USB. That will probably work.
  • You can't get them off. Unless the PS3 is working and able to transfer them, your out of luck. The files are encrypted and any chance of trying to get them to work in another PS3 will cause a format.
  • and I was on the very last level of Devil may cry 4. brb shooting my face.
  • Nothing will work your data is gone unless you can fire up that ps3 even then some data cannot be transferred.

Putting in a PC or ps3 outside of the original unit or laptop will automatically try to force a format.
  • Why don't you just get the PS3 fixed? If it does not power on it could be something simple like an internal fuse or the power source needs to be swapped. I have never done it to a slim, but replaced power supply's on the phatty a couple of times...Could save you some $$, or could just waste $$
  • I just checked online. No tool at the moment, but they did decrypt a PS3 drive and even mount to it on PC just a couple months ago. There's bound to be a tool soon.
  • I'd suggest self fixing it, it's not that difficult, sounds like you got the YLOD. I'd just fix it and then hope it works and if it does, then transfer all you can off of it before it goes again because there is no "fix" for the YLOD no matter what someone says.
  • I already had someone try to fix it which only worked temporarily. That's back when I could at least get it to turn on for a little while. Now it won't turn on at all.

    I reccomend this^

Or....albeit kinda savage....if it's a HDD issue, google the hair dryer trick. Might be able to help you revive your PS3 just enough to salvage your data. I'd would take it to a reball/reflow guy 1st though.

  • If it is the YLOD and not RLOD you should be able to fix it long enough to get a data transfer done. I fixed a few of them (both YLOD and RLOD)and a few did not work out. Either way, I think you will get enough time to get the data out.
  • it sounds like a faulty power supply. get a new one and it should fire up. If the light actually does not turn yellow, it is not YLOD.

Also, do NOT put the old PS3 HDD into the new PS3. It will reformat and erase everything, so that will not help you.

edit: if you're looking to dump the old PS3, I would be interested...just let me know.

generally the same problem though.  95% of PS3 issues are BGA related and some form of reflow will get it to boot at least long enough to pull data.  The other 5% bad PSUs lol.  I happened to hjust come across one recently that didnt power up, replaced the PSU and also got the red, green, 3beeps, flashing red.  Reflowed, works fine.

  • My friend and I bought a PS3 at a flea market that wouldnt power on, we called Sony to see how to get that data off of it. We actually ended up sending the system to Sony along with a USB and they transferred it for us. We were out shipping and I think 30 bucks. As long as the security tape isnt cut they will do it. You have to wait about 6 months though.

Actually the proper way to fix the problem is to reball with leaded solder. I have a guy locally who does this and I can personally testify that I have customer systems that get regular use and were YLOD units 3 years ago. Whether this is a perminant fix- in the aspect that all ps3s will break someday, it's not. However some of these systems have worked longer after being reballed than when they were from the factory.
