Ipod help - ipod video 30gb A1136

hey guys, don't know but maybe someone around here can help.

basically the 30gb ipod i have doesn't seem to work.

turns on fine, charges fine but the issue happens when i connect it to itunes and it just freezes itunes.

so i can't restore it in itunes, and also when it appears in 'my computer' area I can't format it either. When i highlight the device and do a right click it freezes the my computer window.

I can put it into disk mode and that doesn't do anything, still freezes itunes and my computer window.

at the moment i have this ipod cleared too, so I can't even put any songs on it.

anyone around know what to do?

  • try turning off auto sync.

if it works. try to sync one section at a time until it freezes. this happened to me once and it was while itunes was trying to sync some videos. i ended up formatting my PC and it worked on a fresh install (this is probably not the best fix though). it just might help you pinpoint the issue
  • Can it play music- when not connected to anything?

Depending on the use and misuse of that model, the hard drives fail.
  • what happens if you put it into recovery mode and connect it to itunes? Also when its in disk mode and can copy/save anything to it from your PC? If not, as Pronto said, the HDD may just be bad.
  • yeah think its just the HD thats messed up -

screen and wheel functions are working, i tried formatting the drive yesterday on my other computer that has itunes 10 (since the new itunes update does not work with the ipod at all)

the old itunes program recognized the drive was bad, hit restore but still has the same problem.

i cant load any music on to it and it doesn't have any music on it now

usb port works and battery still holds the charge, so its just the drive

*also did a PC format of the drive but that didnt seem to work either

    It is repairable.

You can replace the hard drive with a compact flash card. You'll also need a ipod -> compact flash adpater which you can get off eBay for a few bucks.

Lots and lots of tutorials online that cover this.

im talking straight oem repair with a replacement hdd. whether it be yorself or thru apple, going that route isnt worth it. Adaptor and compact flash card is news to me, but being there would be ni moving parts, if its reasonably priced id go that route too.
