Garage Sale: I WILL BUY YOUR VHS GIVE TO ME

You heard me right.  Send me a list of whatever you have, I might be interested in it.  In particular looking for horror, sci-fi, action, and kung fu flicks, but I'll consider almost anything if I need it for the collection.  PM or post!

  • Is this a new thing now!?

    *goes and buys out goodwill*.

    What's that about? I'm a Russian speaker.
  • I literally obtained 1000 VHS tapes last year in a storage unit. Donated them all to goodwill.
  • Yeah dude I was going to say get your ass to Goodwill. Every Goodwill around here has a million. All for 99 cents and decent titles as well.
  • I'll stop by one of the Goodwill near me and see if I can find any interesting tapes.
  • Seriously, where were you Stan when I gave over 3,000 VHS (90% horror, sic-fi, and action flicks) to a friend of my brother for FREE!
  • How many VHS tapes do you have Stan? I would guess you have a shit ton by now.
  • VHS... the last bastion of retro hope

    Would this interest you?

Nope, don't need any of those, thanks!

Phew, I sadly don't know.  Probably at least 1000.

  • As a general reply, VHS collecting has been around for at least a decade, but has started to pick up over the past year or so. I've found old big box horror movies for a dollar at Goodwill and sold them for $80 or $90 each. Some can bring much more than that. A recently Halloween II (very rare version) sold for over $2000.

Yeah man, rookie error.  Before you throw out anything, VHS, whatever, CHECK IT.  You probably had a couple thou sitting in there, maybe.

  • That's crazy, shouldn't have taken all mine to the burn pile years back.

People said the same thing about lots of collectibles, especially video games.  Be smart!

  • Stan is there a list or a guide you could direct us to?
  • Now, don't the tapes degrade over the years if not "spun" at least once in a while? I know I have cassettes that I spin every few years or so.

Sometimes they can get the dreaded white mold, which is a plague.  If you see it on a tape, throw it out, never use it.  Otherwise you'll need a new VCR.  But in general that's only due to improper storage in a humid or damp place.  I have plenty of tapes from when VHS first started to gain ground and they play just fine.

For evil resellers that want to a buck or two at Goodwill

  • Lol I've been trying to give some up, its hard though.

I don't think I'll ever sell my sealed stuff.

Do not have shame, we're on this before everyone else is!  It's like Battle Beasts.  I remember when you could nab those things for pennies out of the backs of comic book price guides.  Then, one day, all hell broke loose.

A good rule of thumb are big boxes, old clamshells, and book boxes.  Those are usually good nabs, most of the time.  If you're not sure what a big box is, look online.  It's a big box with a clamshell that goes inside the box with the tape in it.  I found Drive-In Massacre for $1 at Goodwill, that's about $80 in its condition.  Most movies post 1990 aren't going to be worth much.  It's before that you need to focus on, though there are plenty of good ones later.  I honestly don't know of a good site.  I know of a few, but they're not really concise.  I just frequent an online, members only collecting group on Facebook.  Just peruse eBay, you'll get the general trend.  Old porn generally all sells for $50-60, depending on title and actors/actresses.

Search ebay completed for "VHS" and sort by price descending. Green means GO!

Words of wisdom.  That should help.

That's one thing.  No slip generally = no sale regardless of rarity.  The covers is what sells some of the really rare variants.

  • You're not getting my copy of The Great Land of Small!
  • I've been selling a lot of VHS through my store on eBay lately, I've been kind of surprised. Incidentally, feel free to check out the movie section of my eBay store and make an offer on anything through here or on ebay
