Presenting... Brother Nights!

Hey guys,

Wanted to let you all know about a new site my brother and I are starting. I'll keep it short here, as most of the details are on the site.

My brother and I had been going through all the games in my NES collection playing them at least 15 min at a time, when we realized it'd be

fun to record our sessions and edit them into 5 minute reviews to share!

With that said, we just launched www.brothernights.com with our first review! Feedback is most welcomed, as seeing that its our first review I'm ssure there is plenty to improve!

  • I like the idea and it looks cool. I know this has been tried a couple times before, but people burn out before the end. Good luck!
  • Thanks B! I did some quick math and it could take years, but hey what's the rush, right?
  • Bookmark'd

Cool idea. I'd love to see more.
  • I like the concept. Just please refrain from the vertical camera style that you used at the start of the video as it almost made me stop watching.
  • Very cool, I liked the first video!
  • Thanks guys I truly appreciate the support and feedback! Karkilan, we fixed that for next week's
  • Checked it out... this sort of thing is always fun. Hopefully y'all keep going.

Sweet! Can't wait to watch it!

  • I like it! Ill def be tuning in...
  • bit of constructive criticism- it seemed like more or less just documenting you guys playing the game than a real review. usually with a review you play the game thoroughly and THEN do a review on it but it seemed that you reviewed as you were playing. this makes it more tedious for someone like me who wants to know right away how level 1 through whatever is, not level 1, then level 2, then level 3, etc etc

and honestly it'd make your reviews a lot shorter since there's only so much you can say about a 4 kb video game.

I've thought about doing this and I used to review games a lot back in the day but I found that it turned me into a video game snob and made me too cynical to actually enjoy playing the games. i'd be looking for flaws and picking the game apart for the review than simply enjoying the game

check out Classic Game Room HD on Youtube if you want to see a proper game review video. the guy on there has a lot of videos for every game system and he cuts right to the point and his videos are fairly short.

again sorry if Im being overly critical but if you want honesty then you'll get it from me. good luck on your mission and I hope you make it through all 768 games.
  • Thanks for the thoughts gbpxl! I admit we use the term "review" loosely, since the idea is you're kind of experiencing it along with us. The format definitely isn't for everyone, but we'll be incorporating suggestions as we film new episodes.

I think the biggest request is reduced background noise, so we may look into that going forward. Two games down, 766 to go!

BTW, the newest episode is now live! (New ones are posted every Thursday!)

  • These guys are clearly not going for a CGR style review show. Actually, I don't think you have completely fleshed out exactly what you are going for just yet but you are on the right track. Right now it's just game play footage with commentary. This is a great idea but the commentary plus emulator footage for 95% of the review gets dull. I would splice in some footage of you guys as well. If nothing else, just put that camera on a tripod pointed at you while you play and edit in footage from that as you see fit. You will have a harder time getting people to care about your channel if you resist showing yourselves on camera.

This is a fun idea and I would be much more likely to subscribe to a new channel like this then a new channel trying to be Classic Game Room. I think most people have already picked a couple of channels they trust for their video game reviews and trying to break into that market would be harder than what you are doing right now.

By the way, love seeing other dudes from AZ on here. Cheers...
  • Plastik - I think when we did it we assumed people would be less interested in our faces and more in the game itself. I kinda think of the ScrewAttack video reviews as a comparison. Those are only a few minutes long, not five, but you only hear the guys and don't see their faces.

I think it's a great idea to splice us into it, and if it gets more popular we may do that, but right now we don't have the resources for a camera to do that.

One thing 'd like to point out is that we aren't recording an emulator. That is the actual NES output. We thought showing us with the cartridge and putting it into the NES would communicate that, but maybe not. Should be do more to make that clear?

You are right, the gameplay is more important but I am not saying to turn it into some gimmick where it's a couple of clowns horsing around on camera for 90% of the video. You started the video with footage of yourself so why not use that same camera to record a little more footage to cut into the video?

But hey, what the hell do I know, I have never made a youtube video I am just speaking as a viewer. Also, I don't think it matters whether you use an emulator vs an actual system unless you are trying to post impressive play it throughs or speed runs. For what you guys are doing I doubt anyone will care if it is an emulator or a real system. But yeah, I like seeing you guys use the actual cart. Footage of you putting it into the system is enough for me... beyond that, I don't care if your footage is from the system of an emulator.

Just my two cents. Is the next video up? I'm going to check now!

  • Alright, new video is cool! I subscribed. Don't get discouraged by your lack of subscribers, keep making videos. You are right, you probably don't need to worry about making drastic changes to your formula until your channel gets a little more heat. I think views and subscribers and all that will come for you eventually. Bump this thread when you post every week, NA is probably a great place to pick up subscribers.
  • These are entertaining! I guess I can subscribe to this for sure
  • Thanks guys I really appreciate it!

Plastik - Thanks for the encouragement. We definitely remind ourselves that we do it for fun, and even if only a handful of people enjoy it, we'll keep it up! Interesting that you don't mind that it's an emulator or not. For me it'd be disappointing to know it was, although it wouldn't stop be from watching the video. Also, one of the things I'm looking forward to is seeing how the quality improves over time. We've already talked about ways to capture us in case we do want to splice footage of us in. Another thought was a feed of us playing in the top corner, and the rest of the screen can be the game.
  • Even though I'm not an active watcher (I tend to forget sites that I don't visit daily/frequently), I'm hoping you and your brother don't get burned out before you finish. Once a week though... man... that's going to take... years... to finish the entire NES library lol. Good luck to you and kudos for starting off so ambitious.
  • Cool man !This looks interesting!
  • Hey guys!

The latest video, Alpha Mission, is up!

    www.brothernights.com

My brother and I TREMENDOUSLY appreciate the feedback you have all given here. As a note, we film a few at a time, so changes we incorporate can take several weeks to show up, but know that we are listening and making changes where it makes sense.

A couple of specifics that are coming soon, all of which were suggestions from this community:

Videos will not necessarily be five minutes! If it makes sense (as this week's does) it will be a little less. Never more, but sometimes less.

We are investing in Lav mics (the kind you clip on) so that we sound clearer and you don't here our wives in the background, lol.

Starting with next week's video, you'll see a more proper introduction of us and the games.
  • I really dig the concept guys. PM incoming.

If they went for production like CGR it would take them 20 years to get through everything.  I was fully not expecting going into watching the videos something scripted/highly produced.

Seems to me a couple of guys getting together with some beer and playing a few games to me.  I think the concept is pretty cool.  You get to see them pop the game in and their first reaction to it.  If you are looking for thorough reviews i would image you would probably want to look elsewhere.

Haha, this! We've been popping games in and playing them for 15 minutes for almost a year, so the video came after the idea, not the other way around. We thought it'd be fun to go along with us in experiencing the first 15 minutes of games we've never played before. Definitely not a thorough review by any stretch :-D

  • Alright! Time for the weekly bump (hope that's ok!). Our audience is definitely growing which is really awesome, so thanks guys!!

I'm really excited for this week's video, because we incorporated two BIG changes that the community here drove.

The first is a REAL mic for recording. We made a modest investment and it paid off big time! No more straining to hear us or having to listen to white noise in the background.

The second is a more "official" intro, where you can clearly see what a huge nerd I am, haha.

Anyways, enjoy, and PLEASE keep the suggestions coming!

  • Looking good guys. Dig the new episode and changes.
  • Awesome game editing.

I like when you guys failed - you went right back to that point to show your progress.

Good choice of game too. "Space Shuttle Project" is a game I own, but I've never wanted to play it.

Also, Thank you for having some face time in the begining of the shoot, and keeping the camera focused on the game as you played and spoke.

I find these types of reviews MUCH more enjoyable when people focus on the actual games and not continually try to ham it up on camera. Let the games be the stars, and the hosts can suppliment them.

I kept laughing at your dissappointment (in a good way) every time you guys failed. By the end I was rooting for your success.

Great Job, If you guys make more like this - I'd watch 'em.
  • Alrighty guys, time for another Brother Nights video!

A couple more suggestions that we've implemented:

Widescreen! Our introduction is now in its correct aspect ratio

Closed Captioning! Beginning this week, all new videos will be closed captioned for our deaf and hard of hearing friends

    Keep the suggestions comin!
