Next Gen Poll

With the ideas that Microsoft and Sony are going to try and kill the 2nd hand market, as well as the posibility of going to all digital content, will you be a part of the next generation of gaming, or is this where you stop and focus on the past?

I'm not sure if any, or even a little bit of the details are released or are true, but those are some of the major rumors running wild on the internet. What are your thoughts on the next generation? Will it be a gaming crash like in 83? Will it prove to be the most successful generation?

  • I think it will be successful i think its kind of hard for them to fail at this point. Ill be a part of it, i dont see myself not buying the new xbox lol
  • Yes, but only if there isn't any lock downs to consoles/pure digital content
  • I'll be a part of it, but I don't do much gaming these days. I get excited for maybe 2-3 releases each year, otherwise I may only get about 5 hours a week to actual video game playing.

So I'll be a part of it, but I won't be buying at day 1 release either.
  • Nah, I doubt gaming will crash again, especially the way it did in '83. If anything it will keep growing, but I don't like the idea of download only games, which is the inevitable future of gaming. If not this next generation then the one after that, or that, or that. Personally, I like tangible copies since I am a collector at heart, but if anything, an absence of tangible copies will only make people long for the olden days even more. I mean, what shit are people gonna fill their houses with in the future? Games, movies, computers, music, books, comics... Everything's going the way of the buffalo, which technically is a good thing, but what will there be left for all us hoarders? The pigs need their shit...
  • It's no different than the stuff I already download on Steam.
  • Of course I will. Gaming is a part of me and alway will be. I love the retro stuff, but modern games are on the border of theatrical entertainment these days and really suck you into their world.
  • no, unless a new GH/RB games is released. and i dont see this happening.
  • Not everyone is a hardcore gamer, collector, or member of any sort of game based forum. It prob will go the way of digital and still sell well. On the other hand... there are always dudes like myself, waiting for the next big thing... just to crack it, unlock it, and mod it. I will prob indulge in the next wave, but only after the initial hype dies down like I have done for the last 15 years. Smart dudes make the stuff for a paycheck... smarter dudes hack it for free. I will cast my vote then!
  • I will be participating with Nintendo only as the others claim to have locked down content meaning no used games. Of course if there was a new media on one of the other systems, such as the DVD on PS2 and Bluray on PS3 then I might be inclined however I don't see that coming in the next year....

  • I have nothing against pure digital content. They are certainly providing less value since you don't get to own or resell, so if the prices don't go down, I will buy a *lot* less, but if they have sales like steam or the humble bundles I'll still buy.. Digital games are worth less since they are temporary and unrecoupable, but they are still worth a bit.

This is not a true statement.  Stuff from Steam, for instance, or GoG, is no more temporary than any of the physical media you own.

There is no reason the console makers can't subscribe to a similar business model where content is tied to a login with a checkout/unlock system in place.

Well, to me it's more temporary because you can't resell it.  It means it only has worth as long as I myself want to play it.  It's much different than stuff that keeps on having worth after I'm done with it.  I'm willing to pay more for things that still have worth when I'm done playing them, especially when I know I won't play them long..

    Edit: clarification
  • I'm not even part of the current generation of gaming so it would take something really impressive to get my attention at this point.
  • When I buy digital only, I'm buying, say 5 hours (or however many I guess I will enjoy it for) of entertainment and thats all I'll pay for. They don't get any of the "well, as long as other people seem to think it's worth 60$ new, I should at least be able to get a good chunk back) or the "I could always trade this to a pal for something else for a while to get more from it" value that comes with physical possesions.
  • I'm not even current gen

Can someone clarify something about the PS 4 thing for me? It says games will be tied to a PSN account. Does that mean if I'm married, or living with a girlfriend, and I go buy, lets say, Rockband 5, does that mean she would have to go out and buy it as well, or pay extra to play it with me because the game is "licensed" to my account only?

The sad thing is they aren't even concerned with piracy at this point, but the used game market. I'll stop there though as that might open up a whole other can of worms.
  • I'd rather have physical media but if the next gen did away with it...i'd still buy. I have to buy every console that comes out because there's always a few exclusives that I want to play.
  • I'm definitely buying the new generation of consoles. Which one first, I still have to decide. I guess I'll see what my friends buy and what the launch titles are. But I won't be buying it right off the bat either. Definitely gonna wait a while. As for the whole download only concept, fine by me. Just so long as my internet can handle it.
  • I'm undecided at this point, but based on the direction gaming has gone in the last five years or so, probably not. It seems to me that every new Nintendo console ends up not as good as their previous one. Ever since the N64, they've lost the strong 3rd party support that had made the NES and SNES so amazing. Since the Wii was such a huge hit for them, they want to make a sequel sort of like how the SNES is a sequel to the NES. Unfortunately, I thought the Wii's library of games overall wasn't that good, and what we do know of the Wii U hasn't impressed me at all, but we'll have to wait until E3 for more details. I'll still be keeping up with what's going on in the industry, but I probably won't be spending much money on the new stuff.

I'm not 100% sure, but in our home, the PS3 "psn account" seems like it's more per system than per user..  Like you tie your netflicks to your PSN account, but it doesn't mean my wife can't use it.

Not sure how it would work with achievements et all, though, they might let you associate a couple accounts with each game or something.

  • If Sony doesn't go pure digital then yes I'll play around in the pond for another generation. I don't like download only unless it's dirt cheap as I have no rights to it and as such I rarely will if ever go over $10 on stuff like that such as with my ipad. I would add though if they decide $60 isn't enough either on games I'd bail too, that or just buy when prices drop weeks/months later when sales rapidly fall off from fed up gouged consumers standing their ground on it. I'll rarely pay $60 at this rate, it's very few games I won't wait until it falls $10+ on it first.

Adam if the sony rumor is right about PSN accounts the concept is to like the Wii tie the games to a specific piece of hardware and if you try and do it elsewhere you're shit out of luck. I do find that hard to believe though, as they allow now up to 5 installs of downloaded apps on PSN(ps3.) Perhaps they may go down to just 1 active so you have to disable the key on one system temporarily to use it on another which would be a hassle, but Sony never was much for being reasonable and hassle free with people ever since hte $600 PS3 hit they called cheap and affordable.
  • ^ hehe, sony seems to be one of the most clueless out there when it comes to their fans (especially outside japan). Seems like they are always pissing everyone off and playing damage control and they never understand why

I get that, but what about multiplayer games where both people want achievements or trophies... hopefully they will allow a "family pack" of some sort. I do see this whole system backfiring though. It's also going to kill Gamefly (which I could care less about anyway). I already see some sort of hack/mod using DNS routing on your home network to send "authorize" packets for the used game market...

That would defeat part of the used game market lockout then since you could "trade" your PS3 with someone else and reload your PSN account on that console as well as trade the games along with it (I know that's being a bit extreme, but it's still a pretty simple work around). Also, if that's the case, if your console dies, then you're SOL because the Wii's system doesn't allow you to redownload the games, so the PSN account tie in would be the best way to go.

  • I'll have at least one system provided there aren't any lockdowns on physical disc media. Right now I'm looking at the Wii U, but I don't know if I would even count that. Seems like it's probably going to be a halfway house to the real "next gen". Still, I think Nintendo is least likely to pull a "your discs are locked to your console" stunt, so with all the rumors floating around right now, they are appealing to me the most right now. Plus, the control scheme of the Wii U looks to be a refreshing take on things.
  • It's hard to count the Wii U as next gen when their selling features are that it can finally play current gen games
  • I'm not even a part of THIS gen of gaming.
  • Modded 1st gen Wii > WiiU with stupid iPad controller.
  • I play it all, old or new, appreciate both worlds. At the same time, time is limited for me so I'll get in where I fit in. I really want to play some Skyrim but I just don't know if I could swing it.
  • I'd buy, but only if there is still physical media. If the digital only route is taken next gen, there is still plenty of older stuff to keep me busy for a long time.
  • I won't take part of it unless it's not restricted to digital only and pre-owned games are actually worth something. If there's lock down to consoles and/or digital only, I'm done. I only wish everyone felt the same. It's not fair if we don't get to decide what we want to do with what we have. It's our property, why can't we give it away or sell it when we want to? I only hope people feel the same way, but judging from the results of the poll so far, it's clear that they don't. I doubt other people, more "mainstream" gamers if you will, feel the same way I do. Though it's obvious some do. It's pretty divided. Hopefully the division is great enough that companies who do this will fail and regret ever going down that route and put things "back to normal". I can see Microsoft doing the console-lock/digital only, as the discussion has been circulating mostly around them. It also wouldn't shock me if Sony followed suit. My faith lies in Nintendo. I think not only are they going to correct what they did with the Wii - alienate the hardcore gaming population - I think they will also embrace them by not falling into the pitfall of digital only and/or console-locks.

With all that say, I must confess, digital only is unfortunately the way of the future. Everyone my age is psyched about this sort of thing, I'm pretty disturbed about it. It bothers me. Steam has done a good job with it, so if it goes digital-only without the console lock, it'll probably be in a Steam-esque way. The problem there, though, is that you're not allowed to sell your account, so even though you're not bound to a single console (in this case, a computer), you still can't resell the games you purchased within their terms. That's not fair. So again, either way you look at it, I don't like it.
