What's your favorite version of the game? Until this week I had only played the genesis version, but I got the psp version a few days ago. It's good, but it feels off. The nes, snes, and genesis versions all resemble Zelda 2.

    I prefer the smooth game play of the SNES version but really like the TG 16 CD rom version for the soundtrack and cutscenes that were removed and changed in the other revisions.



    As far as the Zelda 2 feel, you could really say that about any game that play's simular to Zelda 2 after it was launched. Y's 3 really does not bring anything to the table other than a treat to those who are a fan of the series.

    The PC/PSP version is great! I had the SNES port as a kid and hated the difficulty but loved the overal feel and sound (music) of the game.

    I've only played the SNES version.



    It was one of the first games that I attempted to "power level".

    There was a place pretty early in the game where you could leave the game running with the attack button permanently depressed and gain experience and gold continuously...

    I prefer the Genesis version. The music is certainly better than the SNES version, and I liked the graphics more, too. My brother and I did that trick early in the game, at the beginning of the cave, I believe. Just wrapped a rubber band around the attack button and walked away for a few hours

    Genesis version, hands down. Your attacks don't come out as fast as the SNES one so it doesn't look like the character is violently beating off when you swipe upwards.



    On a more serious note, the music is thicker, the game feels better and your hits are more accurate, it has some extra bits that aren't in the SNES one (like that little intro when you turn on the cart), and I feel the visuals look nice as well. SNES one is still a great game though!

    The Turbografx-16 was the best in my opinion, the Snes version had terrible hit detection.

    I've only played the SNES version and I loved it despite, as StarSoldier pointed out, the iffy hit detection.

    I own Ys III for the SNES, Genesis, TG-16 CD, and PC Engine, as well as the Oath In Felghana remake for the PSP and PC. The SNES port was the first I played so it has a special place in my heart but I still prefer the TG-16 CD version. Having said that, I think Oath in Felghana blows them all away. The music, graphics, controls, everything is perfection, perhaps the best Ys game ever made.

    Leaving Oath of Felgana out of the picture. The version I find best is the TurboGrafx CD version as it has redbook audio and voice acting. Of the three 16-bit home ports the Genesis version has the best graphics, but the gap isn't that wide and the TurboGrafx sound more than makes up for it.

    also....great game.  I have it on SNES and Genny.  I like it on both.

    Redbook audio aside, I thought the TG version was the worst. Movement and gameplay was choppy compared to both the SNES and Genesis versions. Granted, I played it last and was technically spoiled by the Genny and SNES games, but still.

    Is it worth the money getting reproductions of the first to Ys games? I know they play completely differently than Ys 3, but that's about it. I'm not thinking about getting them any time soon, but I'd like to know for future reference.

    If you're asking whether it's worth playing the first and second Ys games, I'd say definitely. Ys Books I&II for the TG-CD are superb and the soundtrack is amazing. It's available on the Wii Virtual Console as well. Ys I&II Complete for the PSP is a superb update with enhanced graphics, etc. Honestly, I've yet to play a bad Ys game. Ys III is kinda the bastard child of the series, like Zelda II, where they went from an overhead action rpg to side-scrolling action platformer. Still great games but quite different from the rest of the series.

    I'd say it's worth playing Ys I & II *IF* you are playing them on the TG-CD. I'd say pass on them otherwise unless you have a PSP.
