Late release NES games vs. same titles on SNES

Some of the last games produced for NES were titles that were also on the SNES, although they were often completely different games and not "ports" of each other. Wayne's World for NES and SNES is a good example of two completely different games. A few others that got released on both systems are Jungle Book, Cliffhanger, Lethal Weapon, Bram Stoker's Dracula, and Cool World. I think it'd be cool to discuss what games were released on both systems as well as the similarities/differences in the two versions. One interesting aspect of this is that most of the last NES games made can be very hard to find (R6+) due to low production #'s whereas the SNES version is almost always a R1 or R2.

  • I like this topic. Although I haven't compared the later releases, I was always pleased by the Tecmo Super NBA Basketball. The SNES version is definitely better but the NES version is still clean and plays close to the SNES version. Also the NES version has Jordan whereas the SNES version did not.
  • You mention this and it makes me think of something I saw at a local retro game store. TMNT Tournament fighters. Was $9 for the SNES version and I told the other half if only it was the NES version ....

I always liked tecmo basketball alot. it really was a great NBA license game on the NES. And having Jordan was just a plus.

Hey Matt: Congrats on the Wildcats just winning the national championship. I assume you are a fan by the avatar pic

  • Maybe not super late in the NES life but Batman Returns comes to mind. Not only was it on the SNES but it was on the Genesis as well. Each game is completely different from the other. The SNES and NES games were more beat em' up oriented and the Genesis one more platforming like the original Batman on the NES.

I think the Genesis one is best and actual takes some though. I'd pick the NES version next. It has REALLY good graphics for the NES and runs really quick with little slowdown and has some nice character animations for the hardware as well. I know the SNES version is popular but as far as 16-bit beat em ups go I can think of 15 or 20 better ones.
  • How was Joe & Mac for NES?

I always enjoyed the SNES version, even if it was a little on the slow side...
  • Super Off Road is a good example of a fairly crappy NES game but a great SNES game. Not sure what the release dates are, both are common, but the SNES version is far far superior.

its playable on NES and pretty fun, the SNES version is superior in every way tho and is pretty close to the arcade version as well.
  • Aladdin and Lion King were PAL only, but i think they are identical to the SNES versions just with 8 bit graphics and color palettes. i have both of them, but i just play my SNES versions.

Still a good price for the SNES one I think, it's actually a really good game. The Genesis version is probably the cheapest, but SNES one is the best of the three. I have all three and I've been playing the SNES one a lot lately.

Edit: More on topic, all three versions have the same title but different art (different Turtle/Villain) on each label/box, and they all have different character rosters and gameplay.
  • I think Wario's Woods on the NES and SNES are very similar too.

I've played Bram Stoker's Dracula on both the NES and SNES, and honestly, I prefer the NES one more. It's just a much better game...
  • Buckeroo$!!!

Bow down to the dog and cat.
  • Im not sure if Tecmo Super Bowl counts, but the NES version is best, hands down
  • I've had both the NES and SNES (only SNES now) versions of Wario's Woods and they're virtually identical other than what the hardware limits the game to.

That's what I thought. Which do you prefer? I'm curious.

    Agreed.

Also, not sure if this counts because it wasn't released super-late in the NES cycle, but Paperboy 2 was on both systems.  I prefer the SNES version.

  • Honestly I prefer neither, but I currently only have the SNES one as I didn't care to keep doubles. The NES has that nice chiptune music it was designed for, but the SNES has the softer visuals so it's really just a toss up.

The SNES version of Buckeroo$ is horrible! The music just keeps looping over and over and drove me up a wall.
  • Jurassic Park SNES > Jurassic Park NES
  • Yoshi's cookie, the graphics are brighter on the SNES version, but the audio tracks suck donkey balls. I usually play the NES version simply because the chip tune music in the NES version rocks.
  • James Bond Jr. for SNES is hands down the worst game I have ever played. I thought I was being over reactive but online reviewers say the same thing. I tried it last night and the first level begins with a platform atmosphere and horrible controls. Regardless, it seems fun. Within 10 seconds you are transported to a new screen where you are now in a helicopter and it is the most impossible level and extremely un-fun. I am going to try the nes version tonight to see if it's the same or different. Without doing that, I am already comfortable saying NES > SNES on this one.
  • Battletoads/Double Dragon for NES is better than its SNES counterpart.
