Fatal Frame series

Being disapointed with the current gen's lack of horror games I've been wanting to get into some older ones.

So, what should I know about the series before getting into them?

Comments

  • Very good games, I worked on the first and second one for the Xbox, I think the Xbox versions look better but the PS2 fanboi's would argue.

They added content to the xbox version and added different effect lenses that effect the graphics to make it look like an old movie ect ect.
  • I'm PS2 guy, but I am nothing like the idiots who endlessly argue about xbox/ps.

If I decide to get into them I might try to open a WTB thread here.

What is the game play like?
  • Good games. Somebody has all 3 for sale CIB for PS2 for $20 a pop. Maybe strike a deal?

  • After Silent Hill, Fatal Frame is my favourite horror series. No lie, the first game is one of the only times where I shut a game off because my nerves were completely shot. The idea of taking pictures to damage ghosts is both unique and adds to the tension because often you have to let them get extremely close in order to effectively damage them. On top of that you have great atmosphere and interesting stories pretty much throughtout the whole series. It's been a while but I remember 2 being my personal favourite.

    Absolutely recommeded.
  • sealed 1st print are very HTF for PS2. Please buy them from me. They are graded though, so tough to play.
  • Thanks for the info, but it says he's from British Columbia, noooo!

EDIT:I'm not into getting pristine copies, just CIB. I would prefer to not buy something graded as that would only drive the price up, sorry.

Why would he want sealed when he wants to play them

Ain't nothing wrong with smelly Canadians. Unless they have the Frenchie versions of games, I would give it a shot. Sometimes you can find all 3 on ebay for around that price too. It's been a while since I looked at em. Can you have mine?

+1 cool points if anybody gets that.  ^
  • I borrowed Fatal Frame back in high school. Definitely a creepy game.

I've been trying to find a cheap copy of the first one. I already have number 2 (sealed), but I hate starting with the second game of a series if I can help it.

I have no problem dealing with people from other countries, it is just the extra shipping would suck.
  • All three fatal frame games are scary as hell, especially the first one.

My friends got me all three games back when they came out. Definitely one of those games where it's more fun to play together (trading the controller off when you've had enough of shit popping out at you).
  • Just posted a WTB for the games, thanks for the input!
  • Gameplay is classic/pure survival horror. Very similar to Silent Hill and Resident Evil. You explore, find items, use items, solve puzzles, unlock doors etc. I look at them like this... Fatal Frame is the atmospheric horror one (nerve-wracking/creepy/spooky), Silent Hill is the more disturbing horror one (grotesque/wtf), Resident Evil is the most balanced of horror games (perfect mix of all the survival horror elements). All these series are all great in their own right and if you enjoy horror, Fatal Frame is highly recommended. It is the scariest series of all the survival horror genre in my opinion.

Ghosts pop up all over the place. You can just walk by a random window and there will be a creepy ghost chick standing in it. A lot of the ghosts don't even attack you, but they will still scare the hell out of you. The overall atmosphere in these games is fantastic. Fatal Frame 2 is my favorite.

    Awarded +1 cool point!

  • I knew it was that amazing commercial, but I have to be honest, I had to look it up for the quote :/

    -.5 cool points!
  • I accept the ruling of the most honorable Gameblahscotty
  • My only complaint w/ the games is that the controls can be really tough to get used to. I played the first one halfway thru and still struggled w/ the camera's mechanics.

If you're looking for good survival horror games on the PS2, you should also check out Kuon and Rule of Rose.
  • The movement controls are almost like the original Resident Evils (0,1,2,3,X). Just be ready to take some really messed up pictures (aka broken neck lady).

I thought the mechanics in Rule of Rose were more difficult to get used to than Fatal Frame, though I like both games. Of course, I'm a Resident Evil guy, so the Fatal Frame controls were very familiar to me. Also, don't forget Haunting Ground and Clock Tower 3 as well. Both made by Capcom, mind you.
