  • Never touched the game in my life, +50 / 122. HAHAHA, that sucked. I started getting better halfway through though. Maybe I can drag out a +10 by next week.
  • Well, from where you start, you can only get better
  • Guh, I hate this game. Were there no better candidates?
  • i used to be really good at this. i havent played it in 15 years and am not as good as i once was
  • Whatever, it is the most popular golf game on the NES. Usual players like Golf.

Personally, I think that Nes Open is the best golf game on the console, but we wanted to keep it simple here, and chose the original.
  • Jack Nicklaus Golf is pretty fun too, once you get the hang of it. Although, the putting in that game is horrendous, in my opinion.
  • My dad use to play that game when I was younger. Loading the shot screen is taking forever, haha.

I played it recently and I agree with you, the putting is horrible.
  • i always thought golf was the best golf game on the nes even years after the release. they really trie to make nes open close to it but it just doesn't have that same simplicity
  • You're right, the simplicity of the original is its stronger point. However, you can't pass over the fact that Nes Open keep it close to the original, while 'improving' it with features that stood in the mario golf series for a long time.

When I played it a couple months ago, I got to the point where I could get on the green in like 2-3 strokes.  When it came to putting, it would take me like 5 strokes to get the ball in the hole.  If the putting switched to an overhead view, it would be better.  And I agree, the loading the shot screen is so slow lol.
  • Def. All over this one with the masters coming up good call.
  • My question regarding golf on the NES, is What is so Fighting in Lee Travino's Fighting golf.

I owned it briefly once, and I couldn't find any fighting. Maybe I was doing it wrong?
  • I've never actually finished an entire round under par. The best score I've ever finished with was +3. It seems like I always manage to be doing fine until I get to a course with 15+ mph wind that causes my shots to go all over the place and totally ruin my score.
  • I don't have this game, having dumped it shortly after trying it. I grew up on NES Open Tournament Golf and never played this until years later. It's basically the same game with less features, so I saw no need to keep both games.
  • Hole 13 keeps screwing me up, anyone have any club tips for 13? I'd probably shoot a round under par if it wasnt for this hole

If that's the one with all of the islands, it got me too. Besides being impossible I had 18mph winds. I was an even par up until that hole and I ended up +8 by the time I was done so I just gave up. I'll give it a few more tries later this week. For some reason I actually liked this game as a kid, but I almost always played with a friend so all I had to do was beat their score. Trying to get a halfway respectable score in the one player mode is tough!

  • Edited: Nothing to see here pal!

No score posted yet? Alright, here's an early score to start it off.

    About 13th hole:

I suggest to hit with the 4wd at the island to the right, then, depending on the ball position, either a 3i to 4wd to get to the upright island, or 8i-7i to the island left.

Thanks, I'm going to give a few more shots after work today

Got my best down to +18. I just loose it in holes 14-16 and 18. Im right at par up until then and it all goes to shit. Theoretical best is -6, just cant do it all at once.

  • Agree with otter that this is a good choice given that it's Masters weekend and that makes me even more excited to give it a shot.

What happens in the event of a tie?
  • Has anyone ever gotten a hole in one on this game? On my playthrough that I posted my score from, I missed getting one on the hole where the green is on a little island right in the middle of the screen. The ball landed right on the black dot and when the putting screen came up it looked like it was literally right on top of the cup. I couldn't have missed it by more than a fraction of an inch. Is it even possible? I couldn't even find a video of anybody getting a hole in one on YouTube.

i have chipped shots in for eagles with 9 irons and pitching wedges but never a hole in one. i was playing yesterday and got the same thing you were saying. couldn't have been any closer. not sure if it is possible. i would assume it is since you can chip in shots from off the green but off the tee would be near impossible. if anyone else knows any better i would love to hear about it

  • That's really rare to do a hole in one in this game, but it's possible. I actually did one earlier this week. Instead of saying hole in one, it says eagle.
  • That makes sense because on a par 3 it would be an eagle. it must be really hard because alot of my pitch shots or when i put onto the green end up halfway on the hole and i wonder how it didnt go in.

Congrats on the hole in 1 too which hole was it on??
  • Hole 9 with the 1wd, hehe.
  • That is impressive just after writing that last post i hit a shot on hole 3 with a 3 wood and i had just the right wind and it landed half on the hole i almost jumped in the air because i thought i actually was about to hit 1 and no luck, i mean if i blew on the nintendo the ball might have fell in it was so far onto the black part of the hole

That's basically what happened to me. The ball literally looked like it landed right on the black dot and when it switched to the putting view it seemed to be sitting right on top of the hole. I'm pretty happy with my -3 score so I'm not sure if I'm going to give it another go or not. I got insanely lucky on that entire round that I didn't hit a single ball out of bounds and I only got double digit winds on one hole. I was actually -8 after the 12th hole, but then I started playing not to lose and got one par and all bogeys the rest of the way. I just wanted to finally finish an entire round under par for the first time ever. As far as my personal NES accomplishments go, finishing a round of black box Golf under par has to rank right up there with playing an entire game of Mike Tyson's Punch Out while winning every fight in the first round.

Agreed 100% Doug. i had a -3 going into i think the 13th hole and then had a meltdown i am hoping to shoot under par for the first time myself before sunday. i have never posted in the game contest and i missed the kung fu round last week if i break par i think it would rank up there with the first time i beat tyson.
