Video Game "Mastery"

Are there any games you have ever loved so much that you wanted to go just beyond being able to see the end and instead, truly mastering it? I'm not talking about beating it without getting a game over (even though in many circumstances that's what you've already done if you've beaten a game), but doing a no-death run, getting to the kill screen, not taking damage, etc.

About a year and a half ago, I did a no-death run of Castlevania and, about a month later, of Trojan. The few times I've played Castlevania since, now I usually die after Death (ironic) and on the last stage before Dracula. That goes to show that it doesn't take long to get a little rusty even after you've mastered a game.

So back to my original question, have any of you "mastered" a game? Do you even want to?

  • If you can master Street Fighter 2010, then you deserve a medal, because that is one tough game.
  • I mastered getting to SMB3 8-1 with only 250 points....

and I did a no controller run of SMB 1-1
  • No controller run? Am I being trolled?
  • I set the current records at Twin Galaxies for Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Played the crap out of that game and loved every frustrating minute. But like you said I'm a bit rusty now and would need A LOT of practice to get back to that level of mastery.
  • Here's the ones that I can remember that I no deathed

    Castlevania

    Contra

    Super C

    Ninja Gaiden

    Super Mario 1 & 3 & World

    Karnov

    Gun.Smoke

    Marble Madness

    Robocop 3

and Battletoads, but not no death. Beat the game with out continuing and with out using any warps.

  • I've made it through Mike Tyson's Punch Out while beating every boxer in the first round and not taking a single punch. I don't think there's much improving on that.
  • I managed to get to 7-4 in The Lost Levels in 23 minutes. No deaths
  • I have never done a no death run, but I do like getting 100% in some RPGs. Like mastering every materia, hitting the level cap and beating all the weapons in Final Fantasy VII
  • I just have a few so far, but plan to get more

    1943 no death / WR

Super C three consecutive no deaths & marathon WR

Donkey Kong level 128 (4 away from kill screen) WR

    Contra
  • There are A few that I feel I've mastered, I can name them all in the order of which I have.

    - Super Mario Bros. 3 (No Deaths)

    - Super Punch-Out!! (No hit's, #1 Score on all fighters)

    - Super Mario World (No deaths)

    - Pokemon Red / Blue / Yellow (All 151 Pokemon LEGITIMATELY, All pokemon at Level 100 Legitimately)

    - Chrono Trigger (100% Complete, No Game Overs, Max level AND same on New Game+ mode)

    - Final Fantasy VIII (100% Complete, No Game Overs, Every GF & Side Quest, Max possible stats on all characters, max magic, Every triple triad card)

    - Unreal Tournament 2004 (No deaths- suffered damage though)

    - Left 4 Dead (Perfect Run, No damage on all maps on Expert)

    - Left 4 Dead 2 (Perfect Run, No damage on all maps on Expert)

I'm also working on Kaizo/Asshole Mario but it's proving itself tough. I'm down to about 100 deaths per run with the help of savestates. Hopefully I can get to no savestate help by the end of the year. Competitively I'm working on Team Fortress 2, but that's not exactly a "Masterable" game. Starcraft II I have given up all hope on.
  • I mean I can understand no deaths, but one of my friends is going for:

    - LoZ: OoT ; Complete the game completely blindfolded the whole time

    - LoZ: OoT ; Not using a sword throughout the whole game.

These are just a couple of them but she has plans for other challenges similar to these.

I mean either she has no life or she's really good at this game.

A challenge thread would be cool too.
  • Wait, catching all 151 Pokemon is considered mastery? ... I wish I haven't erased that savefile.
  • I'd say I have mastered Super Mario Bros. I have basically tied the speed run time on twin galaxies, Got 1.8M pts on one life, beat the game with only 700 total points and I can do tons of glithces and trick jumps and cool turtle tricks and all sorts of silly shit. I put plenty of time into this game and I feel as if I have totally mastered it. I'd like to make a highlight video one day but I'm far to lazy.
  • No you aren't being trolled I used a piece of wire to touch pins in the port.

I forgot to mention my all diddy heads 101% dkc and my all blue flags 103% dkc3
  • I've no deathed Contra many times.

I've also no deathed Marble Madness (and beat the current posted world record, though I didn't record my playthrough).
  • I have mastered Color a Dinosaur! Come to think of it I have never died or even taken damage. I should record my playthrough sometime.

  • The game that inspired this feeling in me was final fantasy II for the SNES. After beating it, i decided to find all the items and get max hp/mp , then to do it all again in under 70 hrs. including finding the pink jelly in the last dungeon!!
  • Rolling Defender 2 times. It's actually not that hard once you learn all the tricks in the game, but it amazes a ton of people.

For sure!! a no death, no damage speed run would be sick!
  • Here are a few of my NES feats:

Ninja Gaiden - no deaths, no damage except one hit from last boss

Ninja Gaiden 2 - no deaths

Mega Man 2 - no deaths

Mike Tyson's Punch Out - beaten without taking any damage

Super Mario Bros. 1 - Beaten in under 5:30

California Games - Beaten or tied all scores listed on Twin Galaxies

Kung Fu - Beaten 6 times consecutively, scored over 1 million points

I never could get those damn things to appear. I love that game but never got the Adamant armor. I ran out of patience.

  • The only thing I can really claim as mastery is I beat FF 1 with a single white mage on the actual cartridge, no emulation or save states. It was a pain in the arse.
  • Wow, there's been quite a few impressive feats. I used to think my no-death run of Castlevania was impressive. Not anymore! Lol.

When taken into consideration, I tend to think I have mastered Super Mario Bros. as well. I've beaten the entire game with no deaths, no warp zones, and only taking damage once. I don't know if that's considered mastery though. Especially because it is Super Mario Bros. It's not that impressive.

I've beaten the "illusion part" of Ghosts 'n Goblins before without dying. I ended up dying on the second time through the third level and a few other times on the last level.

You might be surprised at how many people haven't beat Super Mario

Did you take any damage from blocking?

  • No death completed game Blaster Master.

Haha, oh yeah! I remember that thread!!

Oh, and does Ocarina of Time with three hearts count as mastery? I think that's a pretty common feat as well.
  • only game I've ever come close to mastery was Street Fighter 2 on the SNES I could beat the game with all characters on 7 star with no losses and could do it without taking a hit (a little damage from a blocked special or 2 though) with blanka and chun li.. I doubt I could beat the game with ANY character on normal difficulty now.
  • Eternal Darkness For Game Cube is one of the games that i beat over and over

and as some of you know , if you beat the game , you can beat it 2 other ways for a total of 3 times

all of the endings are diff and the story line changes a bit mainly based on colors magic spell codes

  • Nightowljrm asks - ''do you want to'' - sometimes beating a game isn't good enough..sometimes you want that feeling that you ''owned'' a game by doing things beyond the normal gameplay, like finding glitches or secrets that you never knew before, maxing your stats, or doing a speed run..etc. that feeling of discovery and conquering keeps you going
