Bump it. I love this thread, it reminds me of the time I got Hyper Duel. Just got Battle Garegga now. I can see the rank system being somewhat off putting though, it seems like you have to really adjust to the game since the difficulty ramps or lowers based on how many lives you have among other things.
I played Layer Section II tonight for the first time, but on the arcade via MAME where it is called RayStorm. It absolutely blew my mind! I actually felt the original excitement I use to get from games when I was a kid. Although I love games and still really enjoy playing them I don't often get that magic feeling from gaming as I did as a wee lad. Anyway, just wanted to say if anyone loves shooters play this bastard on the Saturn, PlayStation or via MAME.
I know you can play it on modern home consoles with updated graphics, but I highly recommend chosing Arcade Mode which preserves the look and feel of the original arcade version, which doesn't need updating as it is fantastic. For those who don't like that parallax type scrolling or whatever it is called as it has been bought up here before I wouldn't play it as it can get pretty intense.
I love how it has multiple levels of fighting where there are some enemy sprites that can't be shot with your normal lasers, but instead have to be bombed. It has amazing graphics, awesome soundtrack, flawless controllers and great game-play. This needs to be played at night with the lights off, sound cranked up and with a joystick.
I know it sounds super corny but it really transported and immersed me into another world where I was a shape ship fighter pilot. I might be prematurely saying this whilst still on my shmup buzz but I think this would now have to go in my top thirty or so favorite games ever!
