Crystalis

Crystalis - One of the Best RPG's of the NES Era!

If You did not get to experience this game back when it was available on the shelf then you missed out - especially if you are a fan of RPG type games.

Some people call this game a clone of Zelda - but that does not do this game justice. You might as well call any platform game a clone of SMB, you know? For a game of this era, it had it's own merits. It was a large world that you got to explore, where you got to know the characters and you actually felt like you were doing something, vs. just grinding for levels so that you could advance.

I wish that SNK had made a Crystalis 2.  It seems that the GBA port wasn't rated as high as the original and I can understand that. There are subtle differences between the two. On the other hand, because of the way the story went, it would have been difficult to pull a plot line for a Crystalis 2.. after that ending that happened in Crystalis.

If they had made a remake, the SNES would have done this game justice!

This is one of my favorite RPG's of all time, and I do not compare it to Zelda. We all know that Zelda is in a league of its own. but its not hard to see the little things that this game brought to the NES era that were reproduced in LATER games, and that says a lot about how it was put together and how it plays out.

  • Yes, it's a great game. Definitely one of my all-time favorites.

As for sequels, Secret of Mana feels about as close to a 16-bit spiritual successor as anything else good (more so than LttP does)
  • I have yet to try that game. I will put it in my list of must-have-games per your recommendation
  • I just recently fired Crystalis back up again.  Fantastic game.  It's what Zelda II should've been modeled after.  I wish they'd have made a sequel to it.  What they should've done was made a NEO GEO version of it.

After Crystalis, I'm going back and completing both Startropics games...

But back to SNK....I have all of their NES carts, and several of them are stellar titles.
  • I've only played the first few hours of Crystalis several times, but it does seem like a very good game. It's on my list of games to play when I get the time.

Soulblazer feels more like a 16bit successor to Crystalis then SOM.  Good game spent many of hours playing that one also great sound track too!

  • I am the self proclaimed biggest Crystalis fan on NA . It is by far my favorite game of all time, and I have played through it at least a dozen times. I too wish there was a Crystalis 2, and have thought of how this could be implemented. One of my ideas was to retell the story through the footsteps of Stom, until his death, then have the original hero take over for the final battle. Another would be a prequel where you play the two heroes up until they are put into suspended animation. Other ideas could include either a hero or villain finding the sword of Crystlis intact in the ruins of the floating tower. Or DYNA managing to survive/escape with it's program damaged.. and in a malfunctioning way of trying to save humanity, it would begin producing more robotic warriors to imprison humans.
  • I just picked this game up today in a blue case for $2.99 at Savers. I guess I should try this one out!
  • strangely enough, i've just started playing this for the first time a few days ago. lol
  • It truly is a great game. There's a lot of little things about it that I wish were in more games. For one, I love how you can always readily see your experience in the HUD. I'm the type of guy that likes to do some grinding at the very beginning of any RPG, so that's a feature I really like the game that a lot of people probably don't appreciate as much as I do.
  • Crystalis has my favorite intro of any nes game.

1997, October 1, The END DAY

  • Crystalis years later (never had it new from retail, but got it used w/book and stuff in the mid 90s) became my Zelda 2 since that game was such an awful departure from reality. I can still hear that badass tune in my head from the field once you leave the initial town.

I died a little inside as a portable gamer when I found that tune and the others rudely gutted by the peons at NST who butchered up the GBC re-release of the game.
  • I loved Crystalis as a kid, oddly enough it wasn't one of my original NES games though. I discovered it in middle school when I spotted an NES cartridge at a friend's house. Geeked out on how much I loved the system and she told me to keep it. Stoked I brought it home and proceeded to beat the crap out of the game.
  • I actually really enjoy Zelda 2 as well as Crystalis. The only real problem I have with it is that it's hard as nails. They experimented with the series (that wasn't really a series at the time) and saw that it wasn't quite the good idea they thought it would be, and I can appreciate that. It's definitely got solid gameplay though, so it matches all the other Zeldas in that regard.
  • I don't think I'd say Soul Blazer, Mana, or any other game is close enough to being a sequel to Crystalis. I actually need to play this and beat it, but I only have the GB port of it. From what I remember from my childhood, I really enjoyed the game, just either got stuck at one part, or forgot to finish it *shrugs*.
  • Zelda 2 hate bothering me. Crystalis was amazing, but I absolutely love zelda 2's engine and mechanics. I would pay good money for a zelda 2 sequel (rom hacks wont do it)

that being said, crystalis is amazing and a must play!
  • I just started Crystalis for the first time about a week ago also! It's really good, and I'm loving it! I wouldn't compare it to Zelda 2, though. Both are great, and different games.

The GBC port is really bad?
  • I loved Crystalis when I was a kid and beat it multiple times. That overworld theme song is terrific! I don't remember details of the game anymore, but other than it having an overhead perspective, I wouldn't compare it to Zelda at all. The Ys games (except 3) might be a good comparison.
  • yeah the GBC port is horrible... I bought it when it was new. I was very disappointed. they removed the cool intro and changed the story around. and it doesn't play as smoothly the worst part is the replacement music

    the crappy new intro
