Worst NES Games That Are Still Fun To Play

The title basically says it all! What are some NES games that you yourself agree are absolute trash yet you still find them fun to play.

My number one choice is EASILY Robodemons. The game is such crap and for some reason, I love it. I give it a playthrough probably once every two months or so. There's just something about that monstrosity.

  • M.U.S.C.L.E.: It's an incredibly minimalist game, but it's kinda easy to learn and hard to master. The power pellets, while useful, are seriously overpowered.
  • Anticipation with friends can be fun even though it's absurdly bad. Hmmmmm, what else; Jaws?
  • I think that personally, ironsword falls into that category. Its terribly difficult but the music is soo catchy, and teh cover art sexy, lol [Fabio!!]. well he appeared nowhere in the game - all you get is a googly-eyed knight that is inept. and the game controls are so hard to play with. but its one of my favorite games just because of the music and themes..
  • Jack Nicklous 18 Holes of Championship Golf. I play it every once in a while. Guilty pleasure I guess.
  • For me that would be action 52. The games are utter garbage but are enjoyable to play and have a good laugh with a group of friends. It's a situation where it's so bad, it's good.
  • I'd have to say Bible Adventures. It does have replay value despite being poorly made. Using "B" button, Noah can actually run faster than the screen can scroll, in which he'll be hugging the edge of the screen, and he can stack animals like Hercules. Two of the three pack-in games basically have the same engine, then there's the third game with baby Moses and you have to protect him from getting slain by warriors, and if you drop him ordeliberately throw him into the river, you lose the objective, but for some reason, the game let's you keep playing with no option to start over except suicide (deliberately killing your character b/c you cannot finish the level), which is ironically an act condemned in the Bible.

The game also periodically quizzes you on your sunday School knowledge, and if you answer correct, you get Bible verses and powerups. The quizzes are easily avoidable, though.
  • Its Hydlide and Bart vs. The World for me! Tons of nostalgia overpower my judgement and I usually have a blast playing either of them.
  • Hydlide! That's another one I enjoy oddly enough. Not as much as Robodemons, but I do like it. It has a certain charm to it. In fact, I like the whole Hydlide formula, it just could've been done better.

With a better combat mechanic it really could have been something special I think.
  • Chubby Cherub! I love playing it every once in a while. Don't why it has such a bad rap really.

I agree. Even if the combat mechanic was the same, it could've been more polished to make it more fair. Especially on the end boss! I mean, that part just isn't even fair. The one time I beat it, I swear I was just lucky... One other thing that I surprisingly love about the game is the small overworld that has more depth to it than you think. Of course, it's not super deep, but it does have a lot more than to it than it appears.
  • For me its Trojan. I cant understand why I like it, I just do. I also agree with nearly every game picked here ... other than Jaws. Its frustrating as hell.

Trojan is actually pretty fun. It's flawed, but not that bad of a game at all, in my opinion. I can actually no-death it in under ten minutes.
  • People claim that Friday the 13th and T2 are horrible games. Friday the 13th is just a bit annoying and T2 is actually one of the better games I've played, mostly for the music.
  • I forgot about Bart vs. the World until I read this thread again, I like that game as well as Bart Meets Radioactive Man. I played those a lot when I was a kid and ended up getting good enough at the bad controls that I can now beat them both. But man, are they bad. The run button is also the jump button and the detection for platforms is needle thin, its a design disaster.
  • Total Recall, there, I said it. It really isn't all that bad, the game has enough quirks that are offputting but it follows the movie pretty well and the game is pretty alright once you figure out some of the trickier parts. There's a part where this hobo throws a hat at you and the only way I can think to beat him is by cheesing it and ducking behind him. Pretty sure it's a game flaw, kinda like how if you don't beat the shit outta Sharon Stone quickly in the first level, an unbeatable dude starts mowing you down with a machine gun. Lots of cool shit in the game though, you get to beat up midgets, fight off angry stray cats, and you even relive the X-Ray scene in the movie. It's not great but I'd call it fun.
  • I can't imagine why people mock it so hard unless they just don't get it, but Silent Service I guess could go into this thread.

Sure it's slow, it's a submarine simulation, so maybe that's why it gets crapped on, but it is fun. You have some quick campaigns you can do, a target practice run, and also just open seas warfare seeing how much stuff you can take down before you're sunk or run out of ammo entirely. Perhaps the problem is that it's a lesser known fact the game while playable on 1 controller actually requires 2 so you can do all the functions. Player 2's pad can allow you to look around while still going in a certain direction, it can also raise/lower/aim the deck gun. Also it is needed for a few sub features, in particular if you're sinking, you can blow the ballast tanks and hard climb to the surface until repairs can be made. Without the second controller it can make the game a bit harder to manage having to turn the whole sub just to look around, deck gun play is harder, and well, if you're sinking you're screwed.

If you can get into it though, it's pretty fun and amusing how it fakes like early "3D" with scaling the sprites of these boats you're trying to sink into these huge blocky messes up close (makes Wolf3D look good in that regard.) It doesn't have much for music, and just basic more realistic sound effects for what a sub does, but where it matters most in the game play it gets fun and intense especially if you're facing down a few destroyers.
  • rygar is so bad its good. terribly flawed game mechanics, but amazing music and theres something about it that makes its special. love me some rygar

batman return of the joker gets hate for reasons i cant understand. love that game

And i think silver surfer could be great. Lack of rapid fire is a huge flaw, your hit box is a bit too big, but the background objects being foreground killing objects kind of ruins the experience. those flaws aside its pretty good, and the music is amazing. I do play it from time to time
  • Really? I've never heard someone say they dislike Rygar before. I'm actually kind of shocked that you consider it one of the worst games on the NES!
  • well i think its just a guilty pleasure, its definitely not that bad. but at the same time it does have a lot of flaws . still fun though but whenever i recommend it to anyone they cant get into it
  • I enjoyed hydlyde too.. except for the damn music.. the same 30 or so notes on an endless loop will drive you insane.

This is true. X_X Man, is it awful. It's actually kinda nice the first few times.

Cause Seanbaby hates it.  It's an okay game, also developed by the same team behind M.U.S.C.L.E., which was Tose Software.

Trojan was Capcom's second game that they programmed for the NES, and their first to use their "multiple color palettes for a character" gimmick, which was better known in Mega Man.  Not bad for 1986!

Software Creations (Terminator 2, Silver Surfer) were a very potent game development team, as their graphics and music are above average.  Unfortunately, due to being British, their games are hard as hell, but because of poor planning.  Isn't there a stereotype where British game developers make very difficult games?

Return of the Joker was an ubelievably nice looking game, but the shooting gimmick got old fast.  Plus, there wasn't a great variety in enemies, and they appeared sparringly, due to limited memory.
  • Hydlide's a good call, though it's not as bad as most people say, either -- it's just simplistic. (And the music is maddening, after a while.) I enjoyed beating it BITD.

Actually I can think of a lot of games I enjoy that have a bad reputation, like Captain Comic and Amagon, but I don't think those are bad games. And most of the games I can think of that are completely trashy, like X-Men and Back to the Future, aren't much fun at all.

Dragon Power, maybe? Most of Dragon Power is kinda fun, though it goes off the rails towards the end, but it's definitely an über-trashy game. Predator is another candidate, but I'd need to play it more. Ring King is fun for a few matches (and we all know what happens in that one...), but ultimately feels pointless.

Oh, I thought of another one: Bird Week.  There's almost nothing to it, but if you want to chill out for 5-10 minutes, it has its charm.
  • Predator is a total piece of shit, it's far worse than X-Men which ain't no gem in the first place.

I'd say that Rambo is a very fun game that gets alot of criticism. It's basically a Zelda 2 clone and it's pretty fun. I also like Wolverine on the nes, the main issue is that the damage system is really wonky, no invinability after being hit means that enemies drain your lifebar on contact and using the claws hurt you unless you're all raged up. I dunno, it has alot of flaws but I enjoyed playing it. It's LJN and it's way better than X-Men, I dare say it's at least what the X-Men game should've been.
  • Predator has some good music. And from what I gather, it was developed by a one-off company called "KLON", not Pack-In-Video. KLON also created a Ranma 1/2 game for the Turbo-16 and some other game for the Genesis.
  • I've also got a soft spot for Kung Fu Heroes. But I definitely dont like it as much as the other 2 I mentioned.
  • I love Badstreet Brawler. I love how you get different attacks each stage to add verity. I like how you "defeat" the dogs. Played the hell out of it as a kid.
  • Quattro Adventure is awesome, love Super Robin Hood in it. Also the 3 Dizzy adventure games are great.

I didn't play those as a kid but when I found a copy a few years ago and gave them a try I was really impressed with how good the games looked.  The codemasters stuff is definitely a little rough around the edges but they really tried to make games that were going to be above the rest.  Most of the unlicenced games are total crap (except Tengen) but they really did some interesting stuff, I think.
