Secret of Mana VS Secret of Evermore

Ok so my best friend and i have had an on going battle for years over SoM and SoE.  My all time favorite game is Mana his is Evermore.  CLEARLY Evermore sucks big floppy donkey dick.  But lets not bicker and argue over how much evermore sucks. And I'll let you guys end this battle for me.  Which is better?

  • They were both fine games in my eyes.
  • ok evermore wasnt a terrible game. But compared to Mana, it just didnt match up, it was released after Mana and just lost so much. Worse graphics, no multiplayer, just an ugly game. Extremely short versus Mana's long game play. Yeah i know alot of that had to do with Evermore being made in the US instead of Japan but still
  • Honestly can't decide on this one, I liked both of them pretty equally.
  • Does this comparison come from the common misconception that the two games have anything to do with each other other than SoE uses the same engine as SoM and they both have Secret in their titles?
  • No, we are well aware that they have nothing to do with each other
  • I haven't played Evermore but has been on my want list for a long time. I really like Mana and the coop is a big part of the game for me so that is a mark against Evermore. I can't cast a vote without playing both but am interested to see what others have to say. I don't think it will be a landslide but I imagine Mana will come out on top.

    Ok, just checking.

I can't vote on this, either, but it'll be interesting to see how it turns out!

  • I've started SoE many times, no longer than a few minutes. This thread has inspired me to give it a few hours of attention to draw a better conclusion. Thanksssssssssssss
  • Mana by far. Although Evermore is a fine game.
  • SECRET OF MANA

  • SoM by far. Evermore sucks.
  • Twice I have tried to sit down and play through Evermore, and both times the game let me do something that made the game completely unbeatable after doing so. Of course both times I had saved AFTER said event, so I was screwed. Games shouldn't let you do that!! I am 2 for 2 in finding game breaking situations.

The first was I sold something that was absolutely vital later in the game, and there was no way to get another.

The next was I went back to a dungeon after already beating it because I thought I had missed a treasure. If I remember right some floor tiles disappear in that dungeon, but after finishing it once, they stop regenerating. So once I went back in there I was stuck.

I'm done with that stupid game. Mana all the way!!
  • the games are opposites! When evermore came out..I remember being stoked, but then I played it....Not too excited about it! I hated the trade exchange concept and I preferred Lufia over it at the time anyways...

    So Mana is better!
  • That's so weird Brian. Never sell anything in RPG's

Both games are great games in their own ways, but Evermore is a bastardized version of Mana. While it uses the same engine, you get 1 character to use (well, you can use your dog, but... it's not the same). Mana, you have 3 characters to use, a nice magic system, a great story, beautiful graphics, and amazing music. Evermore's story is a little bland, the magic system is unique enough but still lacks, the music is mediocre, the graphics are good, though not as good as Mana, but over all, it's a solid game.

    Mana FTW.
  • pretty sure I own Evermore. I'll have to give it another whirl. I know as a kid I was disappointed with it compared to Mana. Good time to give it another chance tho.
  • I am in the minority but I could not stand Secret of Mana. I tried to like it for years, but finally just accepted that it wasn't for me.

    Wrong... about the landslide. ;-)

You can't go up against a huge fanboy game like SoM and expect a fair voting. I respect many of you a great deal more for not voting because you wouldn't cast your ballot fairly as you haven't played SoE, but that should say something right there. You've never even played the other one... because if sucks complete donkey gonads.

I'll note that Drag00n was much better in his assesment of SoE.

  • Haha thanks for noticing that Chrono. I liked both games, that's for sure, and I try to be fair with all my assessments of games.
  • Mana, easily. The visuals pop out more, the attacking feels better, the story hits home harder, the music is actually memorable (or I should say, it actually *has* music), etc., etc., aaaand.. etc.

Secret of Evermore, as stated by others already, is still a fine game, but it can't touch Mana IMO.
  • Attacking is the same in both games....
  • I agree that its tough to compare to a game like secret of mana but remember the point of this is that its an on going argument between my friend and I. He argue that Secret of Evermore is a better game all the way. Where if you take and break it down in to categories, which game really wins?

    Overall game play

    Story

    Graphics

Music (im big on video game music)

    The length of the game

All and all Mana takes the cake. Im not really arguing that Evermore isnt good, it just doesn't compare to Mana... And maybe from time to time I throw in cheap shots at my buddy and tell him evermore sucks. But in all honesty, it is a good game.

  • Wow this ended up more 1 sided than I thought it would. I always thought a lot of people like Evermore over Mana. Still really want to get Evermore and give it a whirl.
  • I honestly have more fun with Evermore. I have played both to their conclusion, and while Mana was definitely enjoyable and worth playing through, I found I didn't want to play it again after beating it. Evermore on the other hand I've played through multiple times and have never got sick of it. I know I'm in the minority on that one, but for me I just enjoyed Evermore more...maybe it's the setting, maybe it's as simple as the alchemy system vs the magic system in Mana. Whatever it is though, Evermore wins for me.
  • secret of mana 2
  • Overall game play

I was actually just thinking about this! I enjoy Evermore far more than Mana, and I've played both to the end quite a few times. I'll use the categories from earlier to explain. (Still all just my opinion)

Story - Mana's story was great, but it just reminded me of a lot of other RPGs where the world is going to end and monsters have "returned". Evermore's on the other hand had some really creepy and morbid moments as well as more sarcastic humour. I think I found it easier to identify with characters in the game because they weren't as stereotypical.

Graphics - Evermore wins here if I'm playing with the lights off and looking to get immersed in the world, but Mana takes it if I'm looking for something a little more bright and light hearted. Both good overall.

Music - Mana definitely wins this one as far as tunes getting stuck in your head. However, I liked Evermore's use of music/sound for setting the mood. Neither compares to some of the greats though (Chrono games for example).

The length of the game - It took me a lot less time to get bored of Mana than Evermore. I'm not sure which has more to do, but I remember exploring the worlds and trying to trade all of the items in the marketplace for a long time in Evermore. I always get kind of bored in Mana when it's time to just fly everywhere and grab all the seeds. I think I felt some of the dungeons lacked personality later in the game.

    So for me, Evermore wins.

  • Im going with Mana... It's all around just a better game from every aspect.
  • Secret of Evermore is a perfectly fine game. Nothing exceptional, but not bad either.

Secret of Mana, however, was excellent. A well thought-out action/rpg battle system, innovative (at the time) menu system, good magic system, great story. Multiplayer rpg's before there was such a thing.

So having the heroines love interest die, an entire community turned into mindless drones, and an antagonist that steals the souls of people isnt creepy and morbid? Or the witty humor of the sprite child? Hmm... methinks you need to replay mana
