The Back of Contra's Box...

I always wanted to see what the back of Contra had to say, so I decided to read it.  What caught my attention, though, is that the graphics seemed to be different from the final release, as the life symbols being drawn differently and the players looking blockier.  Was this from an earlier version of the game, such as a prototype?

See here for what  I mean.

  • The guns that Bill and Lance are using definitely look bulkier.
  • Yeah, i've noticed that, also on Super C, the screens are reveresed, right to left
  • Maybe they are arcade version screen shots?
  • when Nightmare On Elm Street was advertised on LJN posters

LJN used PC screen shots of NOES , the pc version is all overhead

im with mog , arcade screen shoots for the win
  • Nope, these are the NES screenshots. The Arcade version has much different graphics.

They might be artifacts, but the backgrounds look a little more detailed, like there seems to be a wave crashing into the ledge. There also seems to be a faint mountain in the same shot, but seems unlikely due to the NES' color limitations.
  • Could they be shots of the japanese version of the rom? i heard the japan cart had an extra graphics chip or something that added moving palm trees and falling snow as well as the added ending screen with Bill jumping in the chopper and the map screen between levels?
  • The Japanese version looks basically the same as the US version. Well, ok, there are differences but they're mostly in background animation.

That's either from an early build of the game or they're mockups. On the back of a lot of NES boxes you can see stuff like that.

    Mario 3 comes to mind:

  • I'm starting to lean on mockups, since they have the same sprites in some shots. I have to say those graphics look pretty cool, though.
  • They're more than like just pics from a prototype. Back in the old EGM days they would show pics from early builds of games and they had sometimes had slightly different graphics.
