Retro Android

I've just discovered dosbox for android is totally playable (I thought it would be a total pain since it basically needs a full keyboard, and possibly have slowdown but it has a few nice interface tweaks that make it work really well) I just beat quest for glory 1 on my android and am starting the second one now.  I am definately going to be grabbing the space quest series off ebay as well.  This flavour of game seems to work pretty nicely.

I've also installed the zork collection on there and the ZMachine emulator JFrotz has a really nice interface.  I found zork brutally difficult when I tried it on PC, so maybe this will give me a chance to get somewhere

I've also got most of my nes/famicom collection on there, but the interface is not very good for most games, rpgs work fine, and puzzle games aren't bad.

I've been really pleased with this since I have less than no time for playing at home anymore, but it's easy to make time when you are out and forced to wait for something, especially since the phone can bring you in and out of the game so quickly.

Anyone else getting into retro android / iphone gaming?   Which games do you find work the best?

Edit: or iphone, u know same difference I assume

  • I use my HP Touchpad to dual boot with Droid 4.0 and have been playing NES roms on it using a WiiMote for the controller, it's pretty fun..

  • I recently bought an iPad2 to see if I could get into using such a thing. I'm enjoying the games so far with it though the lack of a real control method blows a good bit with platformers and a few other genres because your hands tend to drift. That said, there's some games that truly work amazingly well and what's best is while there's a good many pay things, if you have patience and check a site like iosnoops.com everyday you can see what gets converted to free for good or a daily sale, new releases, and price drops. I've picked up a good many releases both from indie houses like Dragon Fantasy(a comedic 8bit take on dragon quest/final fantasy style with an over the hill adventurer) you could can wait for a $2 day (off of $10) for stuff like Dead Space, Mirrors Edge(a side scroller), or Civilization Revolutions which all work surprisingly well.
  • yeah, the pads aren't quite as portable but I can see that working well with a wii remote.

I found Dr. Mario works really well with the interface on the phone since the sides (where they put the controls) aren't used for the actual gameplay anyway.

My 3 year old nephew was also having a great time playing Sesame Street 1.2.3 while his mom ditched us to try on clothes at the mall. Enough that I might have to track down the other sesame street carts for him hehe

wait wtf....looking this up right now

  • The wiimote makes emulators much more feasible for these things.
  • With all this talk of wiimotes and the rest, would there be a driver to use my wii controller on the ipad?  I have a few games that will detect a pad or icade type device if present.
  • The wiimote doesn't do me much good in line at the grocery store, but if you jailbreak your ipad you can use a wiimote with it I believe. I think your game / app needs support for it though, there isn't to my knowledge a nice driver that will make games think it's an icade or anything. The snes emulator on ipad supports it though.

It's a bluetooth device, so if your app allows gamepads to be connected through bluetooth it might work even without special support specifically for wiimote?
  • Anyone have one of these?

I want that. It's so simple it's stupid. But I've watched videos and it really seems to supremely help out with a lot of games where just because you have no 'feel' for the d-pad you end up drifting all over and missing things.

Also this is coming later this year, it's basically a NES controller shell with an L/R button added, bluetooth, works with ipad/itouch-phone devices. http://www.thinkgeek.com/electronics/retro-gaming/ecea/#tabs

I don't have any actually use for this, but the wood panelling on the side (ala 2600/intellivision) is almost enough to make me buy it anyway.. lol
