I need a box that's "Customs Proof"

So I'm getting an item shipped in from across the border and I want to make sure that customs cant break it so I told the seller I will supply a safe way to ship his items to me. Problem is I don't know what route to take.

At first I was thinking just a simple metal box with a lock, but then I'm not sure if that looks suspicious. Now I'm thinking of making an acrylic case with a lock...but my supplies are in Utah and I never designed something like this.

Anyone got any ideas!?

  • nothing is customs proof.

Just make it as generic looking as possible and cross your fingers. If it's valuable have him insure it.
  • yeah anything that looks overly secure they will try to open, maybe some nerds have one of these they can spare http://www.planetforce.com/acryliccases.html
  • You can't make a box 'customs proof'. That's the definition of suspicious and will get lots of attention. You can't promise that customs won't hold up your package. Your best bet is to fill out the paperwork clearly, package everything carefully, and don't get overly complicated with the packaging. Make it easy for customs to pass over your item or, if they inspect it, put it back together easily.
  • Exactly what Luke said. Simplicity is the best way to avoid customs from opening a box. Make sure the seller isn't cryptic when filling out the paperwork on their end and you should be good. Honesty is the best policy with customs.
  • I think you're just asking for it by shipping in a locked case. Even if they can see the item it doesn't mean the item isn't (theoretically) packed with narcotics. A simple brown box with some scotch tape and insurance is the best way. If it's really worth considering doing something that involves a Mission Impossible briefcase then pay the extra for a secured international shipping option.
  • Not sure if you have the chain store Pat Catan's by you. Its a craft store. The wife and I were in there grabbing something and saw they have these plastic stoage boxes. They are somewhat thicker version of the plastic action figure protectors. The are really sturdy but flexible. 8 X 3(ish) X 12 size they are $3. Put the game bubbled in there, then put that bubbled inside a cardboard box. I saw them and thought of this thread.

nvm - just noticed Ohio and PA only. I can grab you one and send it to you if it sounds like it would suit your needs. -James-
