Is there a common problem/easy fix for NES controllers?

I have 3 non working Nes controllers two of which came with a CIB Action set. I cleaned them inside and out and they will not register at all in my Retron 3, which is what I test all the stuff I get on. Its not the R3 because it reads the one I use all the time just fine. Any Ideas what it could be?

    Have you tried the NES controllers in an actual NES?

    No I haven't I guess I probally should.

    They could also be worn out. sometimes the contacts and/or the depressers under the buttons wear out over time. or the wires got pulled from their connection point. but check to make sure they work in another system first. I had one controller that worked fine in my SNES but not my FC Twin. after a while I just cannibalized it for parts to fix another controller.
