Collecting Mistakes you made before you were a collector
I just remembered something painfull that happened before i got into collecting games..
When we were moving my mom gathered my gameboy games (had about 15, all complete) and threw out the boxes and manuals because they took up too much space
bye bye megaman 2 3 4 box
whats your story?

Hanging up those four ICO art cards using tacks was a pretty stupid thing to do. That might be my worst offence.
I've long regretted giving away my first Mega Drive with four games to my niece. Years later, I heard the thing was broken and now it is gone altogether. Sure, I have more than made up for it with my current Mega Drive collection, but it's still too bad I did away with my very first own games console.
Also, I wish I had taken better care of my PS1 collection. There's plenty of cracked cases, scratched discs and wrinkled manuals in my collection.
And of course I've thrown away lots of leaflets, flyers and registration cards from my games. Not the worst thing imaginable, but keeping all that junk would have increased the collector's value.
Well I think most of us threw out the boxes for gameboy games when we where kids, thats why they are so much harder to find CIB.
well worst mistakes is not taking super good care of my games so some cracked case and scuffed discs nothing major, that and selling my games that I didn't play or like for a few measely
I had alot of systems and games growing up, and I sold everything to the company I currently work for back when I was 15 to fund my car project I finished by my 16th birthday. At the time, I figured I had outgrown them, and was going to leave video games behind for a life of cars and sports. Now Im back!
I sold all my Ps1 Stuff, in 2003, i had the system plus 16 boxed games...
I did a "sort of" bad thing with my PS2 games. I removed all the manuals and inserts and placed them in file folders, then I took the discs and placed them in a disc holder.
The cases? Threw them out.
However, now - the inserts, manuals and the discs are in SUPER mint condition and I can find old PS2 cases that they fit into and makes them look perfect. So it's a "half" mistake.
Other than that - it's all the GBA and SNES boxes and games that were given away and thrown out.

thanks for reminding me, I used to have this giant binder with loads of cut outs from magazines and stuff relating to rpg's and mainly Final fantasy stuff and I took my final fantasy manuals and punched holes in them to put them in that binder.
I had a pretty impressive PS collection. Not a million games, but all the rares and htf's. I bought them as they came out, played them and then stored them carefully. After i got a PS2 and moved to Madison, I figured i didn't need them anymore. I thought I would get a couple bucks each for them.. but I was surprised to find that they were quite valuable.. lol..
Years later I decided to reacquire some of my old favorites.. Imagine my surprise when I found that a decent copy of FF7 was worth $50 to start!
Anyways, I have since rebuilt the collection. I have all of my originals and some really nice stuff i wanted back then.. lol.. and some stuff I had never heard of.
Geez, though.. i miss my copies.. oh well.

I would have to say my worst mistake as a collector was similar to Xed's, except to save space moving I threw out all my snes boxes, including chrono trigger... d'oh!
I've made a few mistakes in the sense that i've opened a few sealed games which I later regret as they have increased in value. I also regret never paying that extra five quid to get an LE or CE and opted for the cheaper standard edition, only to later realise that the investment would have been worth it - The FFVIII and MGS box sets are two examples I remember passing up on. I also remember my local GAME (Which was known as GameZone or EB Games back then) selling Sega MultiMega's for £50, and passed up on the chance...
On the other hand, I make more mistakes now as a collector. I am a sucker for anything with Limited or Collector's Edition on it, and as a result I have been burnt a few times, like with the Modern Warfare 2: Prestige Edition and a few other LE's and CE's which have been touted as very limited, only to discover that after launch there seemed to be an endless supply of them. Likewise, many LE's and CE's I have paid full price for upon launch thinking they might become rare have later been reduced to £10-£15 to shift, whereas others I have passed on have become incredibly rare (Assassin's Creed 1 & 2 for example) - Something I am hoping I won't get stung on with the God Of War Trilogy set
look up the GOW3 trilogy on ebay gemini..
i regret not ordering one and trying to get my hands on one now
I threw away all of my gameboy boxes, along with all my flimsy paper Genesis boxes. I've also got several cracked ps1 cases/scratched disks from not being taken care of very well as a kid. My one copy of Suikoden is broken in half . Also, when I was about 8 or 9, we moved and somehow my entire genesis collection and console were stolen/lost. My parents bought most of it back for me, but I'm still missing games to this day that I used to have.
Oh and another mistake is being an angry gamer and breaking about 25 controllers and now I really don't have any except 2 sorry 3 buttons for my genesis, controllers for all the new generation systems, and like two PS2 controllers. Now instead of throwing them against the wall or on the ground, I slam them on a soft surface like the couch.

I really hope that mine comes undamaged. I've suffered enough already with CE's coming damaged and then not being able to obtain a replacement. Recently with the Batman: Arkham Asylum package, which PLAY.com stupidly shipped in a plastic bag, and it arrived damaged. Idiots

throwing out all my snes boxes, and throwing all my ps1 and 2 cases away and keeping the disks in cd cases.
Lending a friend of mine my psx and ps2 games that's how I lost my Legacy of Kain: Blood Omen and black label Final Fantasy VIII (he lost them when he moved'.
Sold my Tombi 2 copy to a game store for 5 $, and Legend of Kartia for even less.

Traded in my Gamecube and PS2 + all games including Tales of Symphonia, MGS Twin Snakes, Paper Mario.
I collected NES games. *shudder*

It was also the scandinavian version, so its even harder to find! Luckily i still have the manual These things sell complete for around 100 bucks
My biggest regret is not being born in the US. Lots of thrift stores, flea markets and underpriced games. Here in Norway on the other hand it's impossible to even find a used PS1 game in a store

I am getting the feeling that i am fortunate to be in the US in general and Madison in particular. We have GOBS of game stores and lots of fun "finds" here.

Lucky yanks :-P
Our only pre-owned stores are those god-awful GameStop stores, and Game that sucks even more. They don't even accept anything older than Gamecube and barely that.
I'm just happy I have broadband so I can go on ebay to get my fix
It's to bloody expensive to fly over to the US to shop, and I've only been three times (two times LA for the E3 and one time NY).

Not to mention Craigslist. Norway has an awful craigslist knock-off that charges 5 $ an ad. People doesn't know how to price things, so a ps2 lot with 10 games can be listed for the FANTASTIC price of 300 $. But my best snag yet Klonoa black label for 7 $ HAR HAR . I want a super jetpack under norway so we can fly over and snag ur deals.
