What generation collector are you? (when did you start?)
Something I was wondering:
When did you start playing video games?
When did you start collecting video games?
For myself, I am a very old video game player - I remember when they wheeled Space Invaders into the arcade. So I have been an arcade player since the late 70's. In fact, having an arcade nearby was one of the reasons I didn't care too much about consoles for many years.
My first console was an NES and I didn't really collect these games (my friends had Activision and Colecovision - so plenty of playing there). My first modern console was the PS2 Gran Turismo bundle - at which point I started collecting casually. My serious collecting is only a few years in.
How many of you are collectors from the days you could buy new PS1 games off the shelf?
Comments
I was born in 1985, and I started playing in 1987 and 1988 on NES.
hmm since my mom never allowed me to own a console, i started with the gameboy and that's it
when i started collecting i started with NES, then like every new collector i went wild on everything that was for sale on a plethora of consoles
but now i've focussed my efforts on PS1/PS2 mostly and a little NES on the side
Mid 90's I guess...first console was a megadrive.
I started on an MSX2 and later got an Amiga 500. My parents never gave me a Nintendo or Sega, so the first console I owned was a Jaguar/Lynx/PlayStation 1.

I used to rent a Megadrive and SNES and obviously caught on on a lot of games I missed in later years!

ooh, pissing to the mainstream!
Thanks for the replies so far! Awesome!
I guess I should add a little to my original question - how many of you bought a good portion of your PS1 games "off the shelf" as opposed to used or on the secondary market?
My only "in-store" PS1 games were FF7 GH and Dino Crisis 2. Otherwise, all my PS1 titles are second-hand/collector market buys. Many of my PS2 games were day of release buys and I visit the game store almost every day for PSP,PS3,360,Wii and DS games,
i bought 0 PS1 games off the shelf, and only 1 PS2 game (persona 4)
I bought or received as a gift well over 100 PS1 games, but I only own 1 of the originals I used to own, and its my black label Metal Gear Solid.
NES. My first video game was Mario 1.
My first video game system was a NES, can't remember the exact date - maybe 1989. I saw it at a friends house and was blown away. After we (my smaller brother and I) bought it, we could not stop laughting about Mario and the funny shrooms, the flowers and all the goombas. Our First game was Trojan on the NES thou.
We never were into collecting, and just used our Gameboy and NES to play, and we did not care about the boxes that much. Followed by the SNES, we put the old stuff on the attic*) and just played SNES from there on.
The following years I began to miss the games of my childhood, and borrowed the NES and SNES from my smaller brother from time to time. In the meanwhile I just used some emulators to play the games I like (But they looked wrong, horrible and where lagging! I hate emulators - except mame). Last year I started to miss my NES again, but my brother refused to give the system to me again, and said that I'd just loose stuff and make the things dirty. This was the main reason for me to get some games at my very own.
I started by picking up a used Sega MegaDrive with megaCD and about 20 games. I never owned such a device and thought it was worth the money, and the games are cheap. But I needed more.
I was shocked to see how many NES collecetors there where, and just bought some common games off ebay. This was pretty expensive, 'cause I was not looking at the s/h fees.
So I went into the wild and started looking for games, and just bought them off ebay in bundles. One of the bundles I got had a broken PS2, which I was able to repair - and still use. So, I had a good reason to get some PS2 and PS1 titles I never played too.
So far, after about six month of collecting, I got about 100 CIB NES Games, about 80 PS2 games, 80 MegaDrive games and 50 PS1 Games. NES games came from ebay and off craighslist, the PS2 games are mainly from second hand stores and the PS1 and megaDrive games came from the flea market. I own about 10 gameboys too, which came from the fleamarket for cheap too. I am unable to resist.
I tried to get some N64 and SNES games too - but I never play them, they are expensive and the look boring. It is hard to come by good SNES games too. So I am focusing on the NES and the playstations.
My main goal is to get as much NES CIBs - at least the better half - and the best and rarest PS1 and PS2 games, and the best Megadrive Games, while keeping my eyes open for some great offers for resale. They all look great at my shelf.
I could have done a nice, big travel for the money I spent for those games the last six month..
At least I can sell those games everytime I need some money.
Personally, I just play PS2 and PS1, and I help my girlfriend playing NES - she is a great gamer*), but sucks at boss-fights. ops:
Thanks for reading,

*) I found the boxes at the attic. While the NES-Boxes were spares and in rough condition, the SNES boxes and manuals are looking great. I said to my brother: You can keep the games, but I will keep the boxes. He just looked weird and said: "What do you wanna do witht he boxes?!" - and I said: "Filling them". He will see my collection for the first time within the next days.
**) She just likes to play the NES, especially Megaman, and refuses to play everthing else, except We love Katamary and Space Channel 5.
nice story Ninn
Oh, I forgot something to add, maybe the most important reason to collect for me. Listen up:
Since I see the NES games become rare and more rare just by wathing at the clock, I decided that it is high time to get them. Now! I dont know how many of them are still out there, and I I dont get them now, someone else will.
The reason for PS1 is pretty the same. But it is a lot easier to find PS1 games than NES games.
And the reason for PS2 is about time too: Witht he arrival of the PS3, Peak Time for ps2 is over, and the stores are flooded with quality titles for cheap. If you know what you are looking for, it is easy time for collectors to find some treasures for cheap!
And the Main reason for the Mega Drive games is the hard plastic box: They just look good whatever happened to them. And they will stay cheap, cause nobody likes it.

I started way back in 1983 when some kind soul at my place of work introduced me to the ZX Spectrum. I was hooked immediately and this led me on to discover arcades and video games in late '83 and I've had a passion for those ever since. I guess I started collecting games straight away.
Despite the relative graphical sophistication of current gen games along with obsessive "3D" , I still prefer the actual gameplay of the old arcade-style 2D games . . .although I must admit that racing games and FPS titles are a lot better these days.
But having said all that, the high point for me will always be buying the Jap version of Ridge Racer for PS1 and playing it to death. If I had to part with all my games collection bar one . . .that would be the one I'd keep :geek:
I've been gaming as far back as I can remember, starting with my older brother's 2600 I think, could have been the Vic 20 first, and I seem to remember a Pong type console floating around too. My first console of my own was a 7800, swiftly followed by a Mega Drive, but I'd been gaming on the C64 for a while before that.
As far as collecting goes, I still own pretty much every console game I've ever bought or had bought for me and a lot of my Sony collection was bought new, but generally at a reduced price, I very rarely bought games on release day. I'm not sure I class that as collecting though, I just never sold any of it.
I started collecting seriously around 7 or 8 years back, could be longer. Basically, every time I bore of modern gaming I start buying retro games as I find them much more fun. I also enjoy hunting down rare games in good condition, especially when I manage to buy the game for peanuts .

That's EXACTLY what collecting is . . .

My story is a little similar to kennyrh in the sense I was introduced to my first home console in 1982 a zx spectrum it was one of the first home P.C's/video games consoles. Complete with rubber key's and Cassette tape loading waiting times. LOL...... I hated those tapes!! My favourite game at the time was "Manic Miner".Then a friend of mine introduced me to his BBC home PC complete with Defender and Asteroids all loaded up. I later got a ZX spectrum+ and played regulary on friends C64 and amiga systems. However my real passion was arcade games. I would spend all my pocket money down the local arcade playing original "Star Wars" arcade, Bruce Lee, Operation Wolf, Steet Fighter, Dragon's Liar, and Mario. My earliest memory of video games though was playing the old table top Space Invaders games and Asteroids whilst in hotels on holiday with family. Great memories may I add.
I hope I never give up playing and loving video games as they really are a source of great fun. 8-)
I have visions of myself in the future surrrounded by a mass of PS consoles and playing the latest COD game in holograghic projection.......
I was born in '76....so I grew up in the Atari age. I grew up enjoying Atari games.......and then when the NES hit in '85 I was all over that too. My parents also bought my brother and I a SNES, and Gameboy's also.
I bought my first PS1.......and bought a couple of games new off the shelf...but usually bought or traded games at my local flea market. My first PS2 was the GT set....that my wife bought me for Christmas.
I currently collect NES,SNES,N64,PS2,PSP, and my wife is obsessed with anything Gameboy----original,Pocket,Color,Advance,Advance SP,Micro, and DS.
I usually buy my games at garage sales, flea markets, or etc. I buy very few games new.... I just can't see paying the price for new stuff when most games can be found fairely easily used....
My first contact with videogames was 1989 with a C64 (Commodore 64) and with the C64 I bought a cartdrige with Rick Dangerous, Micropose Soccer and Stunt Car Racer.
Some month later I bought a Mega Drive with Sonic and Phantasy Star II.
Other consoles (MS, SNES, GB) followed. Then I had a break for about 5 years (1995-2000) before I bought a PS2.
I am a real collector since 2004.
I'm a hoarder
My Grandmother then got me A PSone console a few years later for my Birthday, and ive been hooked ever since then.
