Collecting vs Playing the Games
Anyone else go through periods where you are just way more interested in collecting games than actually playing them? Lately, I can't seem to play for more than 15-20 minutes before I get bored. I'd rather be buying, sorting, and looking at my collection than playing right now lol. What do you do in those times? Or is that normal and preferred?
Also if I am in a state where nothing really is fun to play at the moment could you guys recommend your must play in a life time game for the PS2 or 1? If you could suggest 1 -2 games, any genre that is a must play title what would it be?

I know what you are saying. For me its really a time commitment thing. With school and work my free time is pretty limited. It doesn't help that my ps1 collection is currently at my parents house, but I do have my ps3 to play. I usually play games on weekends but I can make a little time to check the posts here and browse ebay everyday. A part of me fears that I will never have enough free time to appreciate all that the PS1, 2, and 3 have to offer.
Seems entirely normal, zazoie. I also have shifting phases of interest where I play games a lot, and then suddenly I don't feel like playing games, but would rather watch films, or just peel stickers off stuff, or spend a week riffling through thrift stores and such.
Yeah, don't worry about it, mate. I can tell you from years of experience that, if you're a games collector, the collecting comes before any other consideration. Sure, i love playing a game that grabs me but when I'm in one of those moods where i can't be arsed to switch a machine on then I've still got the fallback of maintaining the collection.

Most sane people buy, trade and reinvest. We hoarde and are proud of the fact.
It's what we DO, man . . .
As for game suggestions . . .
PS2 - Black or Darkwatch if you're in a FPS mood. Outrun or Burnout 2 if ya like racers. Crash Bandicoot or Ratchet/Clank for platforming. Soul Calibur or Tekken for some beat-em-up brutality.
Devil May Cry or Bujingai fer hacking and slashing.
I whilst I enjoy collecting games It does not overtake playing the games. What's the point in having a game if you cannot even appreciate it. I collect games because I enjoy them, If I don't enjoy a game I wont hold onto it. I recently traded in 8 PS3 games as I had not played them all yeah and got a game I actually enjoy playing instead. I find it heart breaking to see collectors hold onto games sealed, that's not what they're made for at all.
As for games which you cannot miss:
RPG's - Final Fantasy VII, VIII, IX or X - If you haven't played one of these your not a gamer.
Fighting - Tekken 3
Racing - Ridge Racer Type 4, Crash Team Racing (PS1), Burnout 3: Takedown.
Platforming - Spyro the Dragon 1 and 2, All 3 Crash Bandicoot Games
Horror Survival: Silent Hill 2 - It's a self contained story.
Action: Metal Gear Solid (1,2,3,4 & Peace Walker),
Thanks everyone! I appreciate both perspectives and really appreciate the game suggestions. Will give a few of em a shot.

I'm going to second CTR (PS1) it's great fun especialy for split screen
I used to play games all the time, then one day it was like someone flipped a switch and I started collecting them instead xD I don't play them nearly as often as I did (it's odd for me to play over 2 hours a week now o.o ), but I have recently gotten into Lunar: Silver Star Story Complete. It's a great game if you can get your hands on it
Well firstly I am an avid gamer, and always on the look out for the latest games and content across quite a few systems. Even though I may not play a lot of games I love to watch my son and other gamers play. As for gaming myself I love the online experience, the idea of collecting playstation games came by accident really. I don't like to sell my games once I've played them so I started to build up a collection that way. It wasn't massive though and when I joined this site I only had about 30 games. However collecting UMD movies was always my intention from the launch of the system but that is an entirely different thing altogether.
Now after 2 years of being introduced to this site I have over 250 games for the psp and I admit I struggle to play my psp at times. This is more about my work schedule and home life though, however I do love trawling shops and ebay for rare items for my collection. I can also appreciate looking through my collection and sorting and maintaining as I am very organised as I am OCD by nature.
That part of me is not just evident in my collecting though it spills over to every aspect of my life. I couldn't just collect though I would be bored to tears, I am a gamer veteran and always will be. Since I was old enough to remember I have been playing video games, spending my pocket money as a teenager down the arcades. As a child my family were poor so I never really played that much at home. I did get a ZX spectrum once to share with my bother for Christmas, however these days I can afford to indulge myself in what ever pursuits my wages can afford me. Don't thnk I'll ever stop playing video games.

I love the interview on the front page with the GameRave dude where he said
What I also love as much as the collecting is the cleaning of the games. It gives me great pleasure to get home with a haul and get the Mr Sheen, Micro Fibre cloths and CD cleaner out to wipe away the years of grim and stickers. Its very therapeutic LOL
I agree about the cleaning of the games ritual. Something about the cleaning that makes the game "mine".
I only buy games for two reasons:
- to play
- to sell on for profit
And once I've completed, unless I absolutely fricking love the game or it has sentimental value (I've completed The Simpsons Game but it was the first ps3 game Dad bought me so it's got sentimental value), I will sell on. Can't afford to 'collect' nowadays.
I only sell games if I felt they weren't worth the time to play in the first place. If I complete a game, I just keep it. Although, I only play and collect older games. I don't blame anyone for doing the "play and trade" with current generation games.

LOL that is the first thing i do.

Like a dog marking territory, lol! xD
But seriously, I get what you're saying, though. Makes sense to me. I kind of get the same feeling about games I replace the broken cases on, or remove stickers and sticker marks from.
Even so, I have some that I won't open as they're something that is hard to come by and like to keep it in mint condition.
I love replaying games which is why I keep the gems. It is always great to go back, especially in a world of decreasing quality of experiences.
