Why is there no "JAP" region in the database?

Recently, there was a thread posted about possibly moving some obscour Tiwanese-manufactured 72-pin NES carts over to USA catagorey despite not ever being released here:

http://nintendoage.com/forum/messageview.cfm?catid=5&threadid=70176

It was an interseting read in and of itself, and really made me take a closer look at the categories available. One thing that really bugged me, was that despite Nintendo being a Japanese company, there are no entries for any Famicom games, period. It kind of irks me that the database includes every single region in existance, but no Japanese region. I've recently been exploring the possibility of importing a variety of Japanese Famicom games, now that I finally have in my posession a couple of Venesuelan adapters that allow standard Famicom carts to be played inside a toaster style NES.

I've basically been looking for games that yield a new experience without paying a fortune for high-priced rares. Many Famicom-exclusive games have a certain cuteness, charm, or weirdness to them that most American releases lack. Due to the fact that the Famicom came out in 1983, there are a number of popular arcade games which were released prior to the NES launch, which never made it across the pond.

So far my list of Famicom-exclusive games:

Galaxian

Dig-Dug

Pac-Land

Mappy

Space Invaders

Poo-Yan

Nuts-and-Milk

Binary Land (still in transit as of May 31st)

Rod-Land (won't fit in a toaster-style NES, so I had to use my clone system)

A Week of Garfield

Tetris2+Bombliss

Super Pinball

One Pirate cart:

Super Joy 001

Super Famicom Games:

Parodius Da!

Bombliss

Super Bonk 2

I also have a handful of Famicom versions of NTSC released games which I didn't already have in my NES collection.

There doesn't really appear to be any really difinitive database for Famicom games online, at least not in English. The database already includes really obscure stuff like Hong Kong bootlegs and unlicensed games, but no Famicom, licensed or not. It's really a crying shame because many collectors do collect Famicom games, but none of them are in the database. Every frikking region on Earth is listed, but not Japan, and I believe that is a serious omission.

Comments

  • I guess the reason is that no one has added any of them because everyone that has helped with the database has had any Famicom games or they just haven't bothered to add them.

I know for a fact Gundam Wing: Endless Duel, Umihara Kawase, Tales of Phantasia, Live-A-Live, Final Fantasy V and Custom Robo 1 and 2 have entries, because I did it myself. The only thing you could really do is add them yourself if possible or contact someone to add them for you. Doing every single game ready for images would take far, far too long though, that's probably the main reason. The sheer amount of games would take hundreds of man hours to even set up in the database and I suppose there's just not enough demand to warrant it.
  • Is there an official list of licensed Famicom games available in English? That would be a start. Then one could probably obtain lists for some of the bigger unlicensed developers as well. I don't care about owning the complete set of anything, but I do like to play "fun" and "unique" games. Of course "fun" is subjective, but there's a lot of stuff out there dying to be discovered, and many of the non-rpg games are in English, or simple enough to figure out without understanding Japanese.

This. Also RF Generation has a pretty thorough list, not including all of the unlicensed Famicom games.

  • Agreed. I know there's still a lot of work to be done and that amassing a list of Famicom games isn't exactly a priority for this site, but I'd like it to be in the future. I've considered collecting them

But what about the Famicom Disk System? Shouldn't there be a separate category just for those?

The pId number is apparently the console. By bumping it higher, you can see other consoles that are in the database (?) but not shown on the site yet:

I thought I remembered seeing one for the FDS but I dunno.
  • I made an FC list a while ago, using Bootgod's site (http://bootgod.dyndns.org:7777/) and double checking it with the other lists. I also have a list of exactly which US title corresponds to each FC game. This might be missing a handful of titles, like any special gold versions or carts like "Radac Tailor-Made."

As for FDS, I remember there being a lot of dupes on the Famicom World list. Hopefully I didn't miss anything.

  • Well, that is a good start. Thank you for the links, guys. Rod-Land is missing from the list, though, unless they also called it something else, but it actually says "Rod-Land" on the cart itself. It couldn't be that rare if I only paid $24 for it. One problem with searching for Japanese games is, what do you call title X? Sometimes there are literal Jap/English translations, then there are the phonetic spelling of Japanese words, and equivalent US/PAL titles. I see titles like that which make no legible sense when typed, and unless I know what it is beforehand, I think to my self, wtf game is this?

As far as the Virtual Boy database, that is super easy because there are not that many titles. I didn't even realize that the 2600 had database entries at Nintendoage, new one on me. I'd assume people would go to the sister sites like Segaage and Atariage for that info. Famicom World seems to deal primarily with English-language Famicom titles, and while that is nice, there are still pleanty of Japanese-language titles, such as platformers and such, which are simple enough to figure out without the benefit of reading. For esample, I had fun playing Do-Re-Mi Fantasy on Wii Virtual Console despite not knowing Japanese. My friend and I played through Akumajou Densetsu (aka "Castlevania III" in the west) on my PowerPak, which sounds spectacular thanks to my NES's audio mod (I use a grounded 10k pot to fine tune the expansion channel volume, instead of the fixed 47k resistor recommended by BunnyBoy).

Most titles I have discovered so far have been through internet searches, and reading up on "top 100" type lists. I discovered Rod-Land by reading through Satoshi Matrix's top-100 list on his blog. I also recently placed an order for Binary Land, which I discovered on my Power Joy 001 multicart, albeit mislabled as "Ding Dong" with a hacked title screen, but quite frankly the real deal is better.
  • Oh wait, I found it:

    http://nintendoage.com/index.cfm?FuseAction=Search.Results&pId=9

Maybe someday we'll get a list. I'd also be interested in knowing which lists on NA are for sure complete. You'll have to get Dain to chime in to see what he thinks about famicom on the site.

    http://nintendoage.com/index.cfm?FuseAction=Search.Results&pId=10

That's also for the famicom, I guess?  I dunno.
  • I'm sure there is an official list by Nintendo of all the Famicom games within the licensed library. I know the Famicom did not have a lockout chip, but most games were still officially licensed. The fact that Famicom games come in a billion colors and shapes, makes it harder to differentiate between licensed, unlicensed, and pirates. There doesn't appear to be any type of mark or logo to serve the purpose of "Nintendo Seal" either. Did just anybody produce for the system with or without a license, like in the old Atari 2600 days?

Either way, with the Super Famicom and N64, Nintendo reverted to uniform looking carts, lockout etc, just like the 72-pin NES gamed, but the sheer variety of Famicom carts is mind-blowing.

EDIT: Excuse me for erroneously mentioning that Rod-Land was not on the above lists; the official long name is "Yousei Monogatari Rodland" which starts with "Y" instead of "R". Urrrg, Japanese Engrish phonetic spellings!

    great link...thx

now maybe i can identify the 20-30 carts i have.  some you can make out, but most are in japanese.  i helps that the site includes some of the numbers that are on the label.
  • I've wanted Famicom for years, but I always put out the feeler that we just needed a semi-reliable list to use as a starter. Should I just import the two lists above and go from there? There's no publisher info on that list, so they would all say "Unknown". I can easily import those two lists, so if we all think it's a start, I'll do it.

I'd definitely be in favor of that.  You can always build upon it later.  I've wondered about other lists as well.  Game Gear EUU for example only has two games listed; are those the only two games released in that region or is the list incomplete?  I'm guessing it's just incomplete but don't know enough to be sure.  I'm more concerned about longer lists and their accuracy.  With any hobby I suppose it's hard to be certain about complete-ness.

  • I believe the list is a good start. Is there some way to format the data into some type of spreadsheet so that it can be uploaded all in one go? Also, it may be easier to update the database if NA users are allowed to upload information on individual titles, kind of like a wiki. While this would allow the possibility of inaccuracies, it would greatly speed up the process. Maybe users who own a particular game could upload info such as screenshots, cart scans, or text info, then have it approved by an admin before the information is publicly displayed. As it stands now, only select users have access to modify the database, which means a large amount of work for a select few individuals, rather than a small amount of work by many.
  • I would love to see Famicom in the database,Import the Wiki-list Dain . On giving everyone access is not the best idea. although great in theory, Idiots & couldn't be hackers would kill your joy.

  • You know, the Famicom version of Dragon's Lair is WAY smoother than the US version. Same for the PAL version, but everyone knows about that one already.
  • i am in full support of having Famicom games listed. i will do what i can to help out. if there was a check box, or the like that lets people know if it is english friendly.
  • Quick update: I contacted JC over at FamicomWorld (old friends of ours) and asked if we can use their list. I haven't heard back yet, but I'm hopeful.
  • Dain, I saw your comment about needing publishers and whatnot...I could go through my Famicom titles and change out a few of those unknowns. I could also ask Basil if he'd be willing to do the same (he has more Famicom titles than I do). It's the rarity that I'd be uncertain about for most Famicom stuff though...
  • I believe that having a "?" or "unknown" in certain fields would be better for now, than having no entries at all or an incomplete database. I believe an "ENG" and "JAP" language flag would also be helpful to alert potential gamers as to whether the in-game menus are English or Japanese. Most of the arcade-style titles have English menus, and many of the platformers and pluzzlers with Japanese menus are still playable without knowledge of how to read the characters. Mostly, it rules out J-RPGs, but gamers still have access to playable games through fan translations and PowerPaks. A "T" flag could denote that a translated version of the title is available, without providing link (Google is your friend).
  • Not ALL RPGs are unplayable...the three Wizardry releases all have the option to play in English

Wouldn't the different options you mentioned require changes to the format of the database in ways that would be irrelevant to the other regions? I think it may be easier to make note of that in each individual title's listing instead, although this makes searching a bit more difficult (although maybe something could be done utilizing the search function to list the English-friendly games).
  • At the very least, a language flag for titles with Japanese vs English menus would be easy to do.
  • I've used the famicomworld list for a long time, it has proven to be very reliable and more complete than bootgod's, although bootgod's gets more all the time as more are dumped. I'm sure any list that used either of those 2 as a starting point would be fine. You can also get the publishers if you want from the famicomworld list, just go to the site and hit "go" to get the entire list.

One potential hurdle is that each famicom game will often have multiple alias titles since they have been translated various ways into english and / or developed english nicknames that are not direct translations of the Japanese titles. Having a way to enter aliases that are searchable is pretty much essential for famicom I think.
  • Also, I think any language flag would be best as a slider if possible, whether the menus are in english or japanese doesn't really matter if the only thing they say is H for health and M for mana anyway..

For japanese games, they should not have an english language requirement, so you could just say japanese language requirement and have a slider with something like:

    none,negligable,overcomable,confusing,impossible
