The Longbox Collector's Thread!

So I figured we should make an official PS1 Longbox thread.  It's an awesome 102 game subset within the PS1 library that reminds me of the Black Boxes on NES.  Though not nearly as damaging to the wallet!

First is Jason (Dangerboy's) site that lists all of the titles, and the known variants:

http://www.game-rave.com/psx/playstation_perfect_guide/long_box/index.htm

That should give any new collectors some good reading info.

Second, here's a thread with pics of a full longbox variant set, as completed by member Wrk:

And here's my personal set, though I didn't go for all the variants, just 102 unique games:

Feel free to ask any questions or just to talk about Longboxes in general!  A must have for any PS1 collector

  • Jone: That's a sexy shelf o.O Custom or just lots of searching?
  • Nah, it's an Atlantic Oskar 1080 in Black (Espresso may be the actual color name). I have about 5 of them now for all my various collections, you can see what my N64 / SNES ones look like (these are in Maple, but same shelf).

They're actually kind of hard to find these days, I believe they were discontinued and the price has slowly trickled up. But yeah, I wanted to go with Black for the longboxes!
  • i have a bunch of LBs, but was going to sell them off. I may not now. My best LB is In the Hunt.
  • In the Hunt is a fantastic shooter, and many people don't realize it's from the Metal Slug guys.
  • yeah it's from the same art team right?

Metal Slug is a better game tho, but in the hunt is fun
  • I have a subset of the long boxes. I specifically collected only the first-party jewel case long boxes.

    Battle Arena Toshinden

    ESPN Extreme Games

    Jumping Flash

    Kileak

    Warhawk

    MK3

    Raiden Project

I'm actually interested in selling/trading, so if anyone wants to pad their long box collection, let me know.

I started a Namco long box collection, but the games aren't that great.

  • I just have Alien Trilogy...and the case is in crappy condition.

Well, good thing that's a clear case only so you can just swap it with a cheap Saturn/SCD/PS game

Very true.  Just need to figure out what game to get to bastardize it.

  • those longboxes look so cool, but I'm actually happy that we don't have them in PAL format.. to keep the uniformity in my collection

can anyone tell me WHY these were released? Are all games up to a certain point in time released in there long boxes, before they shifted to jewel cases, or whats the story?
  • I'm not sure on the exact specifics, but it definitely was an early release thing. My best guess is that PS1 went with the Sega CD / Sega Saturn style of cases from a marketing perspective. Then they realized they could cut costs and go with a CD-style jewelcase without compromising their sales, so that's what they did.

    Just my theory anyway!
  • Tecmo World Golf was the final lb release on 6/1/96. After that, all were jewel.
  • Longboxes give me such a bone...
  • Those look great! Might be a subset I'll find myself pursuing, I only have a handful so far. I won't be attempting variants though.
  • what was the first non-longbox released game?
  • Xed: WIthin 5 releases - StarFighter for sure. Was the first game I was shocked to see in a small jewel case. As for which of the long boxes were first released in jewel - that's easy. Toshinden as a pack-in.
