Must Own Playstation Games?

I haven't played PS1 nearly as much as some of you guys, but from a collecting standpoint, there are certain franchises that are must owns for me.  Post yours!

Twisted Metals - 1 and 2 specifically, 3 / 4 / Small Brawl are "meh", but round out the set.

Resident Evils

Crash Bandicoots

Tomb Raiders

Tomba 1 / 2

I'm sure there's tons more but those are just my nomiations.  Post up yours!

  • I agree with Twisted Metal 2 and the Crash Bandicoot games. I'd include the Spyro series and MediEvil. I also had a lot of fun playing Spider-Man.

I'm actually quite a big Crash Bandicoot fan, mostly the Naughty Dog games though. The first four are all excellent, and CTR is a contender for my favourite game of all time.
  • this is sort of a broad answer, but the Atlus RPGs are nice to have.
  • Games what you like/you want play
  • Posted about this in another thread, but The Adventures of Little Ralph looks amazing. I don't own it, but I've done quite a bit of research on it and I am chomping at the bit to play it someday. The graphics and gameplay look incredible.

  • In The Hunt

    Metal Gear Solid
  • Looking at my PS1 games these are the ones I believe are essential:

Crash Bandicoot 1, 2, 3 + CTR: Crash Team Racing - Three top form 3D platformers all worth your time. CTR has to be the funnest multiplayer game I have ever played.

Final Fantasy VII, VIII & IX - The big ones, I myself can never decided my overall favourite, I just love the all. Three massive RPG's and some of the most inspirational moments I have ever witness in gaming.

Metal Gear Solid - Far beyond the format in delivering a cinematic experience, still the best voice acting I have ever heard withing a game.

Resident Evil 1, 2, 3:Nemesis - 3 very atmospheric titles. Sure the controls might be sluggish but the atmosphere is unique. Nemesis brought me some of the most terrifying moments I have played within a game.

Ridge Racer Type 4 - I just love how smooth this game is, I often sit and listen to my vinyls whilst playing this.

Silent Hill - Horror to the next level more psychological than RE and once again sets a very unique horror atmopshere and brilliant use of sound.

Spyro the Dragon - Deserves a mention for it's open world platform set up. Why this series has not gone on to do well I will never know. It was so impressive for the time.

Tekken 3 - Possibly my favourite fighting game, this game felt more like a martial arts fighting game than the over the top anime fest Tekken is today. The speed of the combat is just perfect and the cast is fantastic I can spend hours playing Survival on this game.

  • Just adding to the above (because I agree with all of them):

    Legend of Dragoon

    Mortal Kombat Trilogy

    Parasite Eve

    Parasite Eve II
  • I'd have to agree with several games here:

    Resident Evil series

    Crash Bandicoot

    Tomb Raider series

    Spyro

    Metal Gear Solid

    Final Fantasy series

    Silent Hill

    Tekken 3

I also want to add a couple:

    Oddworld: Abe's Odyssee and Exodus

I would like to add King's Field, but I don't think many would agree with me, despite the first one being the very first RPG for the PS1, while the second was the very first RPG for the PS1 outside of Japan.

  • i wanna add Little Big Adventure, even tho the PS1 version is not as good as the pc version

also Kula World and offcourse Castlevania Symphony of the Night!

Exactly, such a great series. I've put my fair share of hours into Crash Team Racing, my dad and I used to play it all the time.

This is why I'm so eager for them to enable PSone titles on Vita. Game still looks great now and is the highlight graphically (so smooth) and controls (easy to play) for PSone racers.

  • I second Parasite Eve 1 and 2.
  • I would have to second Final Fantasy 7,8, and 9, as well as Tactics. Other's would include the Spyro's and Crash Bandicoots, Tomb Raiders, and both Gran Turismos.
  • I agree with FF7 but you cant leave out the prior ones. Anthology, Chronicles, and Origins. Chrono Cross (a simply amazing game), DWVII (One of the best in the series imo).
  • Oh definatly, If anyone has played all the FF games post VII, VI is a must play. However when it comes to other FF games there are better versions. Here's a list to what I think is the best port for each FF game.

Final Fantasy: PSP - the same game redone with such beautiful sprites, I really enjoyed playing this version.

Final Fantasy II: PSP - re-released with the original FF on the PSP, looks just as good.

Final Fantasy III: DS/PSP - I have yet to play this one on the DS but apparently it is being releasesd on the PSP soon (?)

Final Fantasy IV: PSP -  Once again takes the shrap 2D sprites from I & II, but also gives you the after years content all on 1 UMD!

Final Fantasy V: PSX (Anthology) - This is the FF which really neeeds a reboot, sure the Anthology version is playable, but it looks very dated. I would snap up a 3D release on the 3DS in an instant.

Final Fantasy VI: PSX (Anthology) - This game plays very well still, the PSX version does have some bad load times on the menus and battle transitions but once you get used to it, it's a blast.

I have recently got into the Dragon Quest series through my DS, had blast with IX. I have now bought IV, V, VI & VIII, I look forward to playing them all. Sadly we never got  VII in the UK. But if it turns up on the US PS Store i'll get it instantly.
  • If I had to boil down a top 5 PS1 for me, I'd have to say:

    Chrono Cross (I
  • This thread really makes me realize I need to play FF VII at some point. (Only played FF1 NES, FF2/3 SNES). I've never played a RE game start to finish other than RE 4 / RE 5 either, maybe I'll get around to it one of these days. Good suggestions everyone!
  • If you ignore all the negative talk of fanbois and what about FFVII, you are in for a great game. I bought it the day it was released and I simply could not stop playing it. I eventually got a tattoo of the initial screen symbol and named my daughter Aeris and my son's middle name is Barret. The game is that good!

... You did all that and don't claim to be a fanboy...

  • I was an original fan! Not one of the jump on the bandwagon later people.
  • Well it's a bit unfair to be prejudiced to newcomers. They might simply not have been playing the games at that time. But I know what you're getting at by the term. Them people who state it as a favourite for a fashion statement. Like people who suddenly have got into comic book characters and wear their logo on the t-shirts as it is the fad at the moment.

Final Fantasy VIII was the first I really got my hands on, got it for my birthday just on release. I had seen my brother play it but I think I was a little to young to fully comprehend it. After I fell in love with VIII I went back to my brothers copy and loved it too. I still regard VII, VIII, IX & X as my favourite games of all time. There was just something about Squaresoft in the age.
  • The first 13 PS1 PAL Launch titles from Ridge Racer to Discworld

Grand Theft Auto and it's main competition

Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 3 on the PS1 (I had alot of great times skating through LA and Rio with AFI: The Boy who destroyed the World playing all the way through, which was such an amazing Experience)

    WipEout

Wrestling games mostly (Excluding Smackdown vs RAW and WWE 12, due to realism and Custom AI Options, which I really hate as it was also included in 2004 Sports games since then.)

If you've got a GameCube, pick up the remake of the first Resident Evil. Remakes doesn't get much more perfect than that. In any case, the first three games are definitely great games!

I second this! I bought a Wii dirt cheap recently just to play the Resident Evil remake and Zero (Prequel)  & The Zelda games - After nearly 10 years they still hold up against any horror title today.
