so would this go on this list?

This is either a demo or prototype right? If it is then I would say it would not go on the list. Someone please correct me if I am incorrect.

I think that preview cart would be appropriate.  Usually the type of game that would go to reviewers.  I would not put it on the list, as I have several of them and would consider them not offical releases.

  • I havent seen this variant mentioned anywhere yet.

LOL... You didn't look hard enough then. I mentioned it on the first page.

  • I guess I was just looking for pics.
  • Is this the place to start compiling Canadian variants?
  • I would start a separate thread for the Canadian variants. This is awesome though, as we had/have several unanswered questions about cardboard box variants that we feel may have been Canadian exclusives.
  • Well, I have about 6 on hand right now to start comparing to US releases. I smell a pet project.

Canadian variants would have to be one of the biggest bitches to complete a comprehensive list. I definitely have not seen anyone attempt it before, but would like to see someone give it a good go.
  • I'm nailed for time right now. I picked out the 7 I have on hand right now, I'll try and get something down on Sunday.
  • We need someone who has an almost completed list or someone who thinks they are close, OR someone who is willing to do lot's of on-line trawling. I know the Canadian variants were PAL artwork that said Genesis instead of Megadrive, but didn't they also get some 100% PAL covers?
  • From what I've seen in person no. They typically have multi language on the rear and "16-Bit Cartridge" on the lower front of the case. They would also sometimes be packed with Megadrive looking "sideways" manuals.

This project is in the back of my mind. I was actually swapping them all into clamshells with the hangtabs for a little photoshoot

  • Garfield: Caught in the Act

One version has the title on the spine whereas the other does not. I only found a picture of the titled version but I saw both side by side at a game store the other day so I can positively confirm it's existance.

  • Didn't see this mentioned, but Electronic Arts had to reprint a lot of its sports titles in 1991/1992 due to the settlement with ESPN. The change resulted in rebranding everything with Electronic Arts or EA Sports.

Also, my copy of Garfield: Caught in the Act has a Value Pak sticker on the front, and a sticker covering the UPC: 010086017205

I've also got a copy of Columns with the Sonic 2-style NFR (white label w/ red writing) across the box and cartridge, but I don't have a picture available for that right now.

I don't know how deep you guys want to go with this particular thread, but I could easily toss in 50+ variants on this.

  • Dude, we are hardcore Sega variant enthusiasts. Anything you can provide would be greatly appreciated. Glad someone pointed you over here. Please also feel free to add to the Cardboard Box Project. Welcome to SA!

You'll be pleased to note that I'm one of the Directors over at RFGeneration. I've got an entire database at my hands to help you guys out, as long as you don't mind collaborating on it.

  • Yeah, I got a chub (no homo) when you mentioned that in the Canadian thread. Please invite your friends over as well!
  • I believe most of the Sega enthusiasts are already members here, or aren't concerned about variants. I just never had an impetus to sign up until RobotCowhand posted his thread in our IRC chat.

I was actually heavily involved in the initial cardboard project work at Digital Press with identifying box types, publishers, &c, and carried quite a bit of that work over to RFGeneration when I became a staff member there. I'm sure your lists are much more comprehensive, but I'll see if there's anything I know of that's missing.

In the mean time, here's another one to keep on topic that I recently identified, along with some interesting Trivia:

    QuackShot

The original release of QuackShot offered a free trip to Walt Disney World Resort, courtesy of the Sega Genesis Treasure Hunt promotion. This can be identified by a seal on the front promoting the trip, legal text printed on the back stating "Sega Genesis™ Treasure Hunt promotion expires April 30, 1992" and a box Part # of 670-1710. A later printing would remove the promotion seal and text, and revision the box Part # to 670-1710-01.

Variants! I loooove variants! They're the bes...No, no, no! I hate variants! So minute, yet I must have them all. Grrr.....

Okay, okay, anyway, I mostly enjoy collecting variants on the Genny, but they can certainly get a bit absurd. Here are a few from my collection:

This one is probably pretty widely known. Championship Pro-AM was released by Tradewest. Tradewest was subsequently purchased by Midway, and they re-released Pro-AM under their own label, and with a different-colored label.

    image

Tinhead, originally published by Microprose, got nabbed up and re-released by Ballistic (Accolade).

    image

    image

Similarly, InterPlay let Ballistic do their own re-release of Lost Vikings.

    image

Aah! Real Monsters! is an interesting case: No obvious variances in the label (ignore the blue hue on the left one; that's just label damage):

    image

But a closer look reveals missing pins in the one on the right (sorry, not the greatest photo):

    image

And there's a nice Ballistic sticker on the back of the box, confirming that it was actually re-released:

    image

Similar to the Ecco the Dolphin shown earlier in the thread, I have two different Greendog labels.

    image

    image

Ariel, Disney's the Little Mermaid not only had its art flipped around for the re-release by Majesco....

    image

....it also got renamed (to the even more awkwardly-sounding "Disney's Ariel The Little Mermaid").

    image

This is one of the bigger mysteries in my collection. I have no idea what this Joe Montana II Sportstalk Football variant could be. Canadian release? NFR?

    image

    image

And finally, my favorite variant category: The mysterious ESRB black box re-releases. These were all re-released in 1995-1996, long after Sega had ditched the clamshells, yet here they are....

    image

I thought I had them all, but was shocked to discover the other day that Taz-Mania apparently got this treatment as well. Is anyone aware of any others?

Also, along the same topic, Super Monaco GP has had MANY re-releases in the U.S. I have the original release, the ESRB one shown above, the Sega Classic blue box release, and the Mega Hit Series release. I swear I've seen it reported somewhere that it had a *red* Sega Classic release as well. Can anyone confirm/deny this?
  • There is an ESRB K-A release for Sonic Spinball as well.  It is not a blackbox release, but it did have both a GA and K-A release.
  • Wow, those ESRB variants are dope! Would love to get my hands on those.
  • Another edit: The cardboard box varient of Sonic Spinball is a K-A release that has a black and white manual, which also says K-A on it. There is also a clamshell of the Sonic Spinball K-A release, which appears to still use the regular color-covered manual, but there's really no way to be sure how that clamshell K-A version was originally packaged.
  • Has anyone mentioned the Revenge of Shinobi revisions yet? That game has so many variants it's out of control. Batman, Godzilla revisions and then the classics. It was released as a classics version with a color manual then released again with an ESRB rating and a black and white manual. A few of the classics had revision that had color manuals then we're re released with black and white manuals and ESRB ratings. I also have a variant Batman Returns cart that is well known but not mentioned here. Double Dragon also has a known classics release not on this list and i'm sure Super off Road had one too. I will get some pics up tonight.
  • Some people seem to have forgotten that this is for non-cardboard box games...

The OP has some cardboard games listed under "video game classics" I figured those hard type accolade's were an exception, I'm confused.

Sonic Spinball is still relevant to this thread.  The clamshell has both a K-A and non- K-A release (GA).

While the cardboard is only K-A, if someone were interested in collecting re-released K-A games they would not be able to find it listed as a K-A rerelease just by looking at the cardboard thread unless they looked at every image.

  • I wish I could show some examples but taz mania has a different text for the logo just like mermaid. Super Monaco GP has an organge race car on the cart front as well as a red variant. Raiden Trad also has two different colored box art with a possible label color difference.
  • I took some pictures!

  • The cart label differences have been discussed. They are printing variants - in Japan versus in US versus in Mexico. That was deemed to be "going too far" with respect to this thread.
