Did any PS1 games ever come shrinkwrapped?

I figured you guys would know better than NA, so I'll ask the same question here:

So I keep trying to order Mega Man X6 new from Amazon.com, and they keep sending me copies that, while they have the holosticker underneath, are sealed with shrinkwrap instead of having the typical Y Fold. I have a sealed copy of X6 with a Y Fold, but it's torn, so I've been trying to replace it, but Amazon keeps sending me these ones I don't think are legit seals. Am I wrong? If anyone can verify it's a legit seal, I'll stop returning them

  • I don't know if it is legit or not, but I find the psychology behind this intriguing. You are willing to accept a sloppy seal if it is "legit". If you are willing to accept this type of seal for the price you paid, and you never plan to actually open the game, then I wonder why it matters.

I'm not saying I don't agree with you. I would definitely prefer a y-fold seal if that is how the game was ever distributed. It's just very interesting that a product we would otherwise be perfectly content to own at the price we paid is suddenly not worth it if it isn't "legit" (despite the internal contents being identical to a "legit" copy). I'd just return it and find a y-fold from someone reputable who has photos of the actual item.

Anyway, here is a related thread:

I tend to believe it is probably a store reseal.
  • As I said on NA, yes PS games came w/ shrink seals. Capcom is well known for shrink seals on a good number of their games across the generations (DS games up the wazoo, Mega Mans, Phoenix Wright etc). I remember Buster Bros for the PS (a capcom game) being shrink sealed. My indy store had good number of them back in the day.

Hell, I just went to my shelves (which don't have many PS games here, most are at the parents house still) and I pulled out one of the few sealed games i've got here and it's a shrink seal. In Cold Blood (A Dreamcatcher published game) was bought new by me years ago. It's got the shelf hanger on the back and price sticker on the front.

Looking more, I've got all of the newer prints of the SquareEnix GH re-released games here, most I opened to verify the silver discs, but i've still got one sealed. Shrink seal. Bought new directly from Square a few months ago.

  • Stu is correct. There is no guarantee of a "Sealed Game' being 'not sealed' if it isn't a Y-Fold. Double Jewel cases, the Square-Enix reprints, practically the entire long box don't have Y-Folds.

I've seen Nintendo 1st Party GameCube games come in looking like a monkey shrink-wrapped them, and they were factory direct.

I mean this with all love, professional courtesy, and fan enthusiasm, if you ain't going to open it, and it's going to sit on a shelf / trapped inside a useless plastic prison, WHO. THE. FUCK. CARES. what the seal look like. You're not going to invest any time into it anyway.
  • It's the principle of the thing. I'm not going to pay for a "new" game if it isn't really new. So, if I can't verify the shrinkwrap is a legitimate seal, I don't want it.

Now, I'm curious. If you never plan to open it, why does this matter?
  • Oh, so I guess it's ok to sell a car as "new" if you drive it around but clean it up real good and put the price sticker back on so long as the buyer just wants to put it in his car museum? The principle is, I don't want to let these resealing assholes get away with their crap, so it DOES matter that the game isn't actually new.

Except, you do get to test drive a 'New' Car. You also buy 'New' Clothing that was tried on and handled by other people, unless you only by uppity brand dress shirts in those plastic baggies. 'New' Homes have had people walk through them and are still sold new.

The only way you'll ever know is if you open it. OH, THE CONUNDRUM.

  • this is not a place for the pro/con sealed discussion guys.. some people like collecting sealed games and some people think it's futile.

It's all oke, just leave each other in their right to collect what they prefer
