When did you start collecting vigorously?

Thought I'd bring this one up.  I didn't start until January of this year.  I immediately hunted down the titles I always wanted first, such as Ninja Gaiden, Mike Tyson's P.O. and of course, Lolo.  Pretty soon "the titles I always wanted" changed into "titles".  Hehe.

Prior to that, the last NES game I obtained was Legend of Zelda in 1997.  I traded my copy of Bubble Bobble with manual to a guy for his CIB LoZ.  I actually had never played that game prior to that point.  Had I known Bubble Bobble was going to be pricey by today's standards, I might not have done so.  But oh well.

Other than that, I still have the games I had as a kid.  Those that I sold off I repurchased to have them once more.

How about you folks?

  • I got back into NES (playing only) in 1999 due to ending up getting a "2D-only gamer" as a roommate in college. Well one thing led to another and eventually I wanted every NES cart ever. To that end, I joined eBay in 2000 specifically to help me get as many carts as possible, and within a year I was about 50 away from a loose set of ragged carts with rental labels, writing, etc. So I fiddled around for a couple years trying to buy the last ones I needed one at a time on eBay until, for whatever reason, I had a complete change of heart on the complete vs loose issue. On January 1st, 2003 I resolved to get the entire set CIB and as near mint as possible. Since I was still in university at the time, I sold off 90% of my ragged loose carts to fund the purchase of CIB's. Anyway, here we are a few years later and now I'm only a couple hundred games away from the promised land. (So close, and yet so far)
  • Collecting for NES or period? I started collecting July 31, 2002 with a 3-game (coincidentally, all NES) purchase from Gamestop at the Florida Mall (Orlando)...Dragon Warrior for $3.99, StarTropics for $2.99, and SMB/DH for 29¢. I didn't start hardcore collecting for NES until earlier this year, though (March 24, 2007).
  • I started picking up loose NES carts around 1999/2000; I didn't seriously start to collect until mid-late 2002 when I started cleaning out places locally and then buying CIB games on Ebay/online.
