Need Super Help for Super Glue Removal

Hey everyone,

I recenlty got a Turbo Duo, needs a few things, curerntly restoring it the best I can, a few replacement caps here, some soap and water here, you get the idea.

Here's the original post: http://www.nintendoage.com/forum/messageview.cfm?catid=10&threadid=88471

Pretty much on the CD door, there appears to be some gloss/super glue (to my best guess) and I need a hand removing it. I don't want to use any removers that will eat the plastic or cause more damage. Someone sugested using Vaseline, I gave that a shot, but not sure If i did it right or not. I applied a layer onthe arear and kept rubbing it with some paper towel, after about 15 minutes i wiped it clean and it's still there :/ maybe I didn't wait long enough?

Any help would be greatly appeciated!

Thanks everyone!!!

  • I would take it apart before using cleaners on it to avoid any damage to the internals. Turbo Duo's are like a high maintenance woman, one wrong move and it is gone!

Gasoline is great for super glue, Laquer thinner is too but I am not sure how it will react to the plastic, it should be fine but it is a try at your own risk.
  • what Shinju said, definitely take the part off so you have more access to it without potential damage, gas would probably work great just be careful with it
  • I'm going to try the Vaseline again but give it a hour or so, I love on the Duos (Not that I knew this before, just found out now) 1 philips head screw and the door is off ^-^ so I'll do the best I can to clean it, maybe I'll let it soak in warm soapy water later, and then I'll give it some gas if nothing helps from the previous attempts. I have a few other cleaners with me at work, but they have Acetone so I'll pass on those for now. Thanks for all the advice so far, keep em coming ^-^ I'll try anything to save my new baby ^-^
  • vegatable oil?
  • There is a super glue debonding product that is basically acetone, so you don't want to use that on this.

You could try sticking the lid in the freezer, that will cause the glue to get brittle, then hit it with a hot hair dryer and use a small plastic knife or blade to chip it off.

Unfortunately your glue is so thin that this'll be tough to pull off cleanly.
  • I've always had good luck removing super glue by gently scratching at it with my fingernail.

Superglue gets really brittle when it dries, so you can essentially just scratch it off.

You know, I've done the same in the past, but this tme I cant get anything to flake or anything to looko like any kinda improvement... I wonder if its not glue at all on the machine, I wonder if its just the remains of someone who removed glue or stickey residue with a acetone product and what im seeing is just melted into the plastic now... but then again.. if that was true... would it be shiney? hmmm...

Yeah, then it is quite possible that it is not superglue at all. It might be a much stronger adhesive, or even the result of some kind of powerful solvent melting and smoothing out the plastic.

How does it feel? Is it noticeably raised above the regular plastic surface? Is it really smooth? Can you feel any kind of edge?
  • It almost looks like epoxy residue to me
  • Water always ate all the super glue I used alive. It's how I got it off my fingers that I stuck together. It basically dissolved. Might have just been cheap though.
  • Telling ya, try a little Gasoline, if you have a 4 stroke lawnmower or maybe a friend down the street or something.
  • I cannot feel any edge at all. Ill give it some gas soon
  • Looks like epoxy...
  • Could potentially ruin the cover but have you tried some fine sand paper to maybe sand the layer off before you hit the plastic? *edit* there is also this: http://www.ehow.com/how_6383150_remove-super-glue-off-plastic.html from everything ive read its basically these same steps.
  • Gas had no effect, it cannot be destroyed, my next idea is a proton pack
