Will my tv be HD with this set up?

My family got a new 55" LG 1080p TV. They have a Directv HD DVR coming to replace their standard receiver and I'm wondering if this set up will work for HDMI quality? Here it is:

RF from the wall to RF in on DVR receiver. DVR RF out to RF in on VCR/DVD player. VCR HDMI out to HDMI in on tv.

Now I'm sure you're thinking, who needs cable run through a VCR when you have a DVR? Well my mom still likes to record some shows to VHS's. anyways their is no HDMI in on the vcr, not even component in, only RF in and composite in. So once the cable passes through the DVR and into the VCR through RF will it reach the TV with HDMI quality? I know of course dvds will be in HDMI quality but will the directv?

any help would be great, thanks.

  • I've never heard of a VCR having HDMI output and only coaxial input. Then again, it's been a while since I've actually used a VHS VCR. My guess it that your Hi-Def source will be lost via the coaxial input on the VCR unless your VCR's manual specifically states it has a Hi-Def pass-thru feature. More than likely the coaxial input is downgraded to SD for VHS recording, and you're not going to get Hi-Def on the output unless watching a DVD. Of course keep in mind that DVDs are also SD, but the signal will be cleaner than other cable methods.
  • I was thinking this would likely be a problem. though I had a solution. I could run the wall rf to my directv receiver then from that run an hdmi to my tv and a rf to my vcr. so my directv would be sent to my tv directly AND my vcr. then run an hdmi cable from my vcr to the tv.

You said earlier the VCR did not have HDMI, so how can you run a HDMI cable from teh VCR to the tv?

The VCR will not output HD, so running signal thru it will cause you to lose HD.
  • That would work fine. You'd be able to switch to the DVR HDMI signal directly on your TV while your VCR was secretly recording the coaxial SD output.

He said the VCR does not have HDMI input, but it does have an HDMI output.
  • Nope, just run your RF out to the VCR and it will still record whatever is playing on the receiver in SD and run the HDMI to your tv and enjoy your HD output...

This worked on my HD cable box, not 100% sure it would work on a HD Direct TV receiver....
  • The TV will not display in HD because the VCR is not receiving an HD signal in from the beginning. I would do as Ninja said, assuming your DVR can output 2 outputs at the same time. One to the VCR and one to the TV via HDMI (straight from the DVR).
  • Show your mom a VCR tape on that new TV. It will look like shit and she will no longer wish to use it. Seems real silly to get a big fancy new TV and a HD DVR if you are not going to use them for what they are made for, and just go back to using the old technology.

my old DVD recorder is like that too. component input and HDMI output. it is an upscaler too, probably why the hdmi ouput.
