Sega Nomad : wont work with batteries

So I'm not sure if it's a voltage regulator issue or what but my Sega Nomad won't work except when plugged into an AC adapter. No red light flashing, no nothing on battery power, just dead. The terminals on the battery pack read 9+V with 6 fresh AA's and the contacts have all been cleaned and inspected. I'm thinking it may be a bad capacitor or voltage regulator or something but don't really know.

Has anyone else had this issue and been able to fix it? Thanks in advance.

EDIT : i'm looking for a nomad thumbwheel for contrast, if anyone has a 50K ohm thumb wheel potentiometer please let me know and I'll buy it from you. Or just a nomad for parts, either way.

  • I was playing my Nomad last week, and had this same prob, put in new Bateries, checked Voltage, everything checked OK, I kept messing with it, and it started working perfect?

    2 things to try,

Make sure the Battery slot connects the terminals when you snap in the battery pack

Also, I wasn't leaving it ON long enough, click the on switch to the right and give it a few seconds

    Good luck
  • Are you using rechargables? I think the game gear will not work with them. I think.
  • Not using rechargables, using stock energizer AA's.

Messed with the power connection, etc, still nothing :/
  • try flipping them around
  • I've never been inside a Nomad, so I can't give you any kind of specific information. But in any kind of device that uses alkaline batteries will have some kind of diode preventing the AC adapter from attempting to charge the batteries. Try tracing out the circuit to find it, it's possible that it was damaged somehow (someone put batteries in backwards, used the wrong AC adapter, etc).

  • Are the battery connections corroded at all? If you've got some buildup on those, they might not all be making a proper connection.
  • Nope, clean terminals, got 9.5V on the board at the power switch and it's getting juice but i think there's a voltage regulator or something that swaps between sources that might of blown or something?
  • Fixed it!

The power jack on the nomad has an open, rather than replace the jack I just wired between the two points. Not it works on AC and DC, word!

I also scavenged a speaker from a headphone so that's fixed. Now to put a new LCD in it and replace the thumbwheel potentiometer. Anyone got a 50K 16MM wide thumbswheel pot I can buy?
  • I may have one- can you post or pm me a pic of the exact part you need.
  • I need the variable potentiometer (thumbwheel) for the missing contrast wheel. I also need a power jack.
  • This one was the volume on a Normad- if i remember correctly its the same as the brightness.

Here is a picture of the part i have:

  • Yeah that's a volume knob, I could probably use it though. How much?

Hey Taco. I PM'd you, but wanted to reply in this thread for others. I'm having the same battery issue with my nomad. It works fine on AC, but even though the battery pack is delivery 9volts, it doesn't work with the battery pack. Did you use the fix featured here?

I find if I bridge the two pins (as in the video), the nomad works with batteries. Did you do this fix? If so, how did you bridge the connection? If not, do you have any pictures or a description of your fix? I really want to get my unit working on batteries, but I'm not that technical (can solder though!)
