The gem of my collection is, quite honestly, is this little prize pictured below.
Here's the story:
When I was 13 I borrowed NES Metroid from a kid at my school. I absolutely fell in love with the game, and played it for hours upon hours, sometimes playing to beat it, sometimes goofing around, but always just loving the experience. The game was so eerie to me, with the dark background and the sci-fi theme and the weird glitches like the wall-door trick... it just had my imagination hooked so badly. So finally it's time to give the game back, the kid was asking for it to be returned. But I know in my heart that he doesn't love the game like I do. He was one of those kids who had parents who would buy him whatever he asked for, and he had probably a hundred or more games, so I knew he didn't need it and wouldn't miss it if it were gone. And back then, we had very little money in my household (my mom still talks about the struggle it was just to afford my NES that glorious Xmas 1987... and how it was all I had asked for... but that's a story for another time).
So what do I do, I want the game, but the kid is asking for it back. Well, this copy of Metroid didn't have the proprietary security screws, so a lightbulb struck in my head! What if I unscrewed it and swapped the game with another cartridge? I searched my rather small collection for another game that didn't require the security bit and hit upon good old SMB1 which I had long ago tired of. And wah-lah! I switches out the roms and screwed everything back. There was a nervous moment when I returned the imposter game to that kid (his name was Dolf)... actually nervous for days afterward waiting for him to confront me about the scheme... but that day never came. As I'd suspected, he had so many games that he apparently never noticed, or maybe never noticed until long afterwards, at which point he was possibly just confused about why SMB was firing up in his NES instead of Metroid. To avoid confusing my little sister, I removed the label so she'd know there was no SMB in there, which she still liked to play. She actually complained to my mom about my heist, but that turned out fine since my mom just went ahead and grabbed a SMB/DH from Funco for a buck.
And that is the story behind the sentimental gem of my collection, the game I loved so much that it inspired me to commit a devious crime. I still have it, I could never and will never part with it, and I place it on the special shelf of my NES collection where my sealed games and homebrews are featured. If there were a fire in the house, I would probably run downstairs and fetch that game before doing anything else.
Haha, this story is friggin' awesome. Clever bastard
I am kinda of partial to my first CIB Nintendo game. Everytime I get a new one and add it to the shelf I always look at it and remember it is the one that started me on this downward spiral way back in 1999. Although almost every other game is more valuable/rare I will always have a soft spot for my CIB A Nightmare on Elm Street.

I dunno about the gem in my collection....but....matt17_52 is the apple of my eye.....the wind beneath my wings....the 1st.....the last......my everythang.
I met James Rofle last summer at his first Canadian apperance. I got in line 2 hours early with a few other people. The staff said we couldn't line up that early. So we said we weren't auctally in line but that were just standing around chatting (which happened to be where the line would start in an hour )
Wow that`s a lot of rules for such a simple question.Anyway my gem is without a doubt my CIB Donkey Kong JR panorama screen i got from my grandpa i named my son after. Got it when i was 5 years old so about 29 years ago. I still got it,i fixed it myself when it was half broken, it`s a great game and it will never leave me as long as i`m alive.

my childhood copy of Final Fantasy III for SNES (still have the box also). I've owned this sucker since the day it came out in the US. I have over 300 combined hours on this cartridge, and I've kept the saves of my mom and my sister from well over a decade ago, only using the first slot since.
There are many gems, many equal, so even though I'm more SNES dude, I'm gonna say this
as it was by far the toughest one to acquire, and also because this happens to be not only one of the most sophisticated games ever released for NES, but also feels very special for being only released in _my_ native region exclusively of all the places in the world (that is the English version of course). Incidentally, I owe getting it to the OP . Thanks again Jonatan!

Ha, I was just thinking of how Scotty is the reason my violet is blue...
Regardless, it's my SMB3 cart from when I was a kid that my dad bought for me on my 5th birthday.
I still have the cart and manual, and I used a pen that was out of ink to make an indentation of PETE L into the front label that you can only see if you hold the cart in a certain angle in the light. I was maybe 6 or 7 when I did that to the label.
Mine is my complete Wizardry crusaders of the dark savant game on pc. Bought it new and played countless hours with a friend taking turns while we had almost no idea what to do since i was young and didnt understand english yet. We played so much we had an unbelievable party we blazed through any enemies with no effort...guess what i never finished it but one day i will start a new game. I would pay anything to be able to play it on nes or snes or any console...

If you can read Japanese, you could always grab it for the PS1 or the Saturn. The Saturn version comes with Bane of the Cosmic Forge as well. That's the only way to get the game on consoles though.
My Mega Man 8 Anniversary Collector's Edition. It was supposed to come with an Anthology Booklet, and when I found there wasn't one inside, I sent Capcom a letter, and they replied by sending me the booklet, plus 3 Mega Man X3 postcards and a set of Nintendo Power Mega Man X pogs. Probably the last time I ever got decent customer service from Capcom. I even kept the envelope they sent it all in.
^^Forte- That is Mega cool. I always love seeingsnail away stuff that was never on store shelves and letters and packaging from different game companies. It's always worth it to write them because you never know what they might send you.
I don't have one game that stands out as my gem, but my favorite part of my collection is my black box nes games. I've been toying with the idea of letting everything else go and just collecting black box games. All variants and all regions.
Magical Chase for the Turbografx 16. Took me nearly 2 years to finally land one, and I had to purchase it in an entire collection of all 94 TG16 U.S. titles. Then I had to turn around and sell 92 of those + a few other things to pay it all off. Took me a little over a month, but I'm debt free from it and damn that feels great!
Didn't I sell you that copy? Haha, I guess one man's trash really is another man's treasure. I didn't think I'd sell something that would end up being a gem in a collection.
I don't really have a particular gem in my collection. I have lots of favorite games, but nothing that is hard to find or really all that special.

So i decided to start this thread because i couldn't find one that existed already.
And it is in my opinion a nice thread to have, because everybody has something in their collection that is very special to them.
So what is the gem of your collection?
It has been talked about before. See what others have said here.

No pickup will ever be as satisfying to get as this.

You had one of my favorite games, and one of my favorite SNES covers as your AV, but you changed it! So don't be surprised if I steal it!

You are very welcome Eero!

Steve's is his Nightmare Before Christmas UMD.
Sidnie's is her tabletop Street Fighter pinball from Otto and Rebecca.
Julian's is his Kirby's epic Yarn. You could take everything away but that game.
Our youngest daughter isn't into games but she LOVES her Elmo stylus.... When she can find it.

So far my "gem" is Pepsi Invaders on the 2600.
