  • WTF, the ebay countdown is not working for me today. I guess I'm gonna have to snipe the old fashioned way. Anyone else?
  • I would love it if they would remove the end time from the buyer. I hate sniping. I put up what I want to bid when I see an item and almost always am winning til the last minute and lose all the time.
  • If you waited until the last second to put in your bid you would win more.

    - and suddenly the clock is working again.
  • Still don't see the point in sniping on ebay. I do find it cute when someone bids 1 dollar more at the last second on something I'm winning.

If you bid the max of what you are willing to pay, there should be no hard feelings if someone outbids you.
  • The point is to pay less and increase your chance of winning.
  • Danger I've seen that argument for over 10 years and I've never agreed with it. A lot of people will put in a good beefy starting bid, but sometimes just like in an honest auction environment which ebay isn't, people can check their wallet and go fuck it and throw another 5 bucks down. Ebay is basically screw you pal once it hits 0, there are no 0's in a real auction. You go and go until someone screws up and pays too much and wins, or someone says that's enough and they're the highest enough. That way it's truly fair for everyone and there can be no complaining about a loss.

As it stands now you can go low and hope it falls under the radar where as if it were setup like an actual auction, it's go until it's done despite when the dude says 'this is it' because you can get in during that repeated 'going going gone' moment.
  • Also, is anyone else not able to see a seller's completed auctions now? When I click "choose more" under buying formats nothing is happening.
  • I'm not having a problem viewing a sellers completes listings. When i click "Choose more", the box pops up and i can choose to show only completed listings
  • Damn, it must be my computer then. It's only happening when I click it while looking at a seller's items, I can see other completed listings.
  • Thats seems rather odd to me. I've been messin around with it the last few minutes or so and i'm not havin any issues.

Sorry for your luck, could be one of eBay's wonderful glitches.. Do you know for sure the member has sold things? I don't think it will pop up if there are no completed listings..
  • Sniping for me is the only logical way to take on auctions IMO. So many people will just bid until they are the highest bidder. But you can't keep topping up if there's 5 seconds left. That's why I always put my highest big in the last ten seconds, higher chance of winning. If the auction is already higher than I'm willing to pay, I just watch it to see what it goes for.

Your definition of "fair" is a weird one. You call ebay  "dishonest" for the way auctions work. That is a falsehood. For it to be dishonest, there would have to be some form of deciet. The rules of the auction are stated, and just because you disagree with how Ebay is run, doesn't make it "dishonest."

Sniping makes ebay more like a sealed bid silent auction, than like an "english auction."

Ebay is fair. You put in your highest bid, and if that gets outbid, so be it. You don't have any right to complain because you got sniped. If you are willing to pay 35, bid 35. If you are willing to pay 40, bid 40.  If I was willing to pay $50, why should I have to pay $41, because you changed your mind? I'd be a damned fool to not snipe, and pay only $36, because you are indecisive.

There are different forms of auctions in the world, just because it doesn't jive with your preconcieved notion of how an auction should be run, doesn't make it unfair or dishonest.

  • In your mind sure, but I think a lot of people would agree with me that it isn't weird wishing ebay outlawed sniping by allowing people to get in true and final bids at least as an option on the site, not a full conversion. I'm going to guess you're a sniper with the tone and dislike to my post your tone is taking.

Of course I bid at the last second on ebay. Anyone not doing this is a fool, imo. Not snipping means you are wasting money on wishy-washy "maybe a little more will win this" bidders. I personally prefer to get the items I am after for the lowest possible value. Early bidding costs money. $$$$. Why anyone does it is beyond me.

Additionally, I have no problem with people wishing for Ebay to change its method of auctioning. I do have a problem with people making accusations that it is dishonest or unfair to snipe.

  • I bid early cause I toss out my max bid whenever I see an item ... thats it. It doesnt cost me money cause 95% of the time, I dont win = no spent money. The logic of why you would think it costs money is beyond me.

And when you do win, it costs you money on all the bidders that "just try a little more." Now, it isn't guaranteed that you'll have these kinds of bidders. However, this situation occurs with great frequency.

Lets say you are going for an auction. You are willing to spend $45. You put in an Early bid. Johnny boy decides he will spend $35 on the auction. He bids, and it is automatically outbid by yours. Its now at $36. He tries $37. You are now winning at $38. You win the auction. You spent $38.

Now, if you had sniped, Johnny boy puts in his $35 bid. You snipe, and win at $36. You spent $36.

Sniping saves you $2 in this scenario. That is a cost of an early bid. This isn't rocket science.
  • As a seller I like sniping. I just put up auctions for 10 days so people could add it to their snipe list. Since most Americans are ADD they can't wait for the auction to end even on 3 day auctions, so they just add it to their snipe list and move on. Who wants to wait the common 7 day auction, fuck that just set it and forget it.
  • I just do five days on mine, 99% of the time a combo BIN/5day, rarely if ever do I use 'offer' or another time frame. I have a game up that was watched by 5, viewed around 90+times so far and in the last 12 hours I'm starting to see bids. I'm thinking this thing may get into a shoving match in the morning.
  • I've been selling my collection off in lots, I know the primary buyer for lots are the big resellers like lukie and jj. So I leave the auctions for 10 days to make sure they see it and add it to their snipes. Half my lots have been bought by lukiegames.
  • ughhhhhh ebay quit changing the format. shipping layout changed. its kind of more clunky on the page now. drop down menus are not smooth because they had to add stupid picture logos on the drop downs of USPS and Fed Ex. Then after my label is printed i usually click ship next item. well yesterday and forever that has taken me to my awaiting shipment on seller manager pro. now it takes me to the shitty old interface. Man ebay sucks. leave crap alone. do people really need logo drop down menus........it was just fine. quit changing stuff...its always so buggy.
  • I'm glad I found this ranting thread! This is about Ebay auctions including or not including a BIN option. I'm just going to copy and paste everything I already posted here...

When I search for ANYTHING on Ebay, the first things I do to narrow my results are #1-make sure it has a BUY IT NOW option and #2-FREE SHIPPING (because how hard is it to factor shipping into your selling price?!). The free shipping also gives the buyer more Ebay bucks and costs the seller the same in the end!

I don't always mind about the free shipping but I won't even look at a listing if there's no Buy It Now option. I don't feel like waiting around for days only to be outbid at the last minute. I understand that people think auctions might give them more $$ than the actual value but simply pick a BIN price that gives you a profit and saves the buyer the hassle of waiting around for days. When I buy something, I know what I'm looking for and I want to buy it then and there, not wait for the POSSIBILITY that I might win it.

The point of an auction from a buying perspective is to get something CHEAP so I have no problem with auctions. I just think the auction should cater to both kinds of people....the patient and the impatient. lol The patient ones can bid and hope that they win. Then comes the impatient guy who doesn't mind shelling out some extra $$$ to bypass all the bidders and buy the item right out from under them.

Pick any item....there's two listings....both start at $20 bidding....one has a BIN option for $35 and the other has no BIN option....both listings are 5 days long. I'm the buyer who knows exactly what they're looking for and wants to buy it....imo I'd rather spend the extra $15 to guarantee my purchase than to wait 5 days where I might get outbid OR pay around the same amount anyways after bidding wars. Does that make sense to anyone else?

  • Hmm you think like how I like to post to ebay, but because there's a lot of intention BIN killing jerks on there I just set the BIN 10% over my asking so I get what I want or I just repost it again. Your ideas make sense to me entirely. I used to do dollar auctions and put a bin at what I'd take on a realistic end to just stop it but most would be killed by cheapskates so I stopped. I'm fine breaking even on there, just not taking a hit.

so you're compaining that people list things in auction format on ebay? on the site that built it's brand on auctions?

I would rather fixed price listings went away. I get disgusted seeing the same listings from asshole resellers at 150% over market value. I wish they would quit fucking up my hobby.
  • Why the hell do sellers on here and various other sites want buyers to pay their sellers fees? I've seen the arguement, I do it for other people so you should do it for me.

Well stop f***ing doing it for other people. This irritates me to high hell and the only people who benefit from it are the mass sellers. No one is going to notice if you bump your price up 2-4%. Hide the fact your are adding on a charge for something you are responsible for.

I guess you didn't read the part where I stated "...so I have no problem with auctions.

To sum it up again, I'm not complaining about people listing things in auction format.....I'm complaining about people listing things in auction format and not adding a Buy It Now option. The sale should cater to both kinds of people - those willing to shell out extra cash to BUY IT NOW (set your BIN price to a profit level you feel is comfortable and yet attrative enough to the buyers) OR those who wish to bid it out until the end.

I also don't like asshole resellers. I'm guilty of paying too much $$ on many games just because they offered free shipping or meant something to me personally. I also can't stand people who've made me offers on various online selling sites and completely devalue the items I OWN. I then provide PROOF to these people in black and white with listing upon listing upon listing in my favor. Then they try to justify ripping me off by the fact that I don't have to deal with site fees. That's usually the point where I don't even consider doing business with that individual anymore. I'm not some big money making reseller...I'm a casual collector/gamer who gets rid of extra copies or games I simply don't want anymore. Some people I've found you just can't reason with.

For example, if I bought a CBFD CIB for $120, why do people expect me to give it up for $70-$80? It's called math....that would be a LOSS for me. I'm either going to break even if it's a trade perhaps or make a small profit. If I bought it for $120, I might start bidding at $119 with a BIN option of $140-$145 (and I've seen them sell for close to $200!!)....that's not being an asshole reseller....that's trying not to fuck yourself over.

??????? um i dont understand what your even saying....just look at the total price. if its too high, dont buy it , problem solved...no need for this rant.

  • I think its silly that a fee called "sellers fees" is being paid by a buyer. I really can't make it any simpler than that...

Sorry you missed the point of the rant.
  • that argument kinda nullifies half this thread

edit: have I seriously been sitting on this page for over 10 minutes?

In the case of NA, I don't mind stating that Paypal AND shipping fees are factored into the selling price. I prefer the "goods" option (where they charge a fee) because it provides a comfortable insurance-like feeling to the buyer....you have proof that you paid for a physical good. If you send a "gift" payment for a game, you could get screwed by the seller who doesn't send you anything and claims you just sent them late birthday money.

If it's Ebay, I think it's common sense that people SELL things on Ebay. Generally speaking, when people SELL things, they like to make a PROFIT. If I bought something for $500, I'm not going to list it at $520 and expect to make a profit on Ebay...it might even be a loss after all the fees. I personally have no problem being honest with the listing in saying that fees have been factored in.....most people are smart enough to know Ebay isn't free to use...both parties are using Ebay to buy/sell so they need to pay for that privaledge. The alternative is to sell on places like here but you have to know who you're dealing with and expect less than Ebay prices when selling...that's the trade off.
