Protecting Your Sega Cardbord Boxes

A while back on the forums I asked about hard clear protective cases for 32x cardboard boxes - not universal cases where you would need to make new covers but clear cases that the whole box would go into to protect it. At the time, the best I could find were the clear cases for NES games but they looked much to big to fit Sega boxes well, so I was less than enthused. Recently while helping a friend build shelves for his complete boxed NES collection, I saw he had some games in cases and they looked good, so I revisited the whole thing. After some searching and back and forth emails with a few folks, I got sample "NES custom" boxes from a fellow on eBay to try out. Here is the result:

The boxes fit the cardboard 32x and Genesis games like a glove. Some may feel they are too snug, but I think they look great. Even the cardboard boxes that were in rough shape (I'm looking at you Doom) have been constrained by the box protector so they look much better than before. Cosmic Carnage is sealed with the original store hangtab, and it also fits although somewhat tightly. I only ran into a few cases where a sealed game would not easily fit - I could have forced them but didn't feel it was worth it. The Ballistic and Accolade cardboard boxed games (Hardball, Star Control, Turrican, etc.) do not fit in these boxes as those cardboard boxes are thicker. Finally, I couldn't get Sonic and Knuckles or Ishido: Way of the Stones to fit although I believe that is because my boxes are in really bad shape and possibly water damaged, causing the cardboard to swell.

The quality of the box protectors is quite good - the archival grade plastic feels thick and sturdy and the top and bottom tabs fit firmly. Best of all, if you open one end, the insert slides out so you can easily play the games.

The fellow's ebay store is here: http://stores.ebay.com/dgodkin?_trksid=p2047675.l2563. Obviously volume is factored into price, and you should email him directly for volumes greater than 100. He includes clear round tabs to seal the top and bottom flaps if you want to close them forever.

I should also note that you can get box protectors from our fellow NinteodoAger, jimpoleshuk, who has a new website up (http://www.videogameboxprotectors.com/). I just ordered some Sega CD box protectors from him and will post a follow-up when I get them. I went with the eBay guy because he sent me free samples to test, matched prices, and I liked the quality.

Let me know if you have any questions on these. I'm very happy with them.

  • Thanks for the link as I was thinking about this the other day! Do you think that any of these guys would do cases for the longer super famicom style boxes as I would like to protect my taiwanaese boxed games?
  • Your best bet is to check with jimpoleshuk at VG Box Protectors. He has a ton of sizes. In fact, these might be the droids you're looking for:

jimpileshuk's long box protectors are the bee's knees.  but, they don't fit the bigger style digital press games and sealed cardboard box games can be a tight fit, depending on how bunched up the wrap is at the corners.

those games do look snug as a bug inside the cases.
  • Thanks for the info on the Sega CD cases - I was wondering how they would work for the Digital Pictures cases. Honestly though, if I can get the cardboard box games in there, both sealed and unsealed ones, I'll be happy. I actually like the snug fit on the 32x games - I prefer them not to be rattling around in there.
  • man those are a snug fit! It's good how you can hardly notice them, not that it would look bad at all if you could.
  • Sonic & Knuckles is just thicker. I have a very nice copy and it's just to big. These are great items though.
  • I received my Sega CD box protectors from jimpoleshuk today and they are also very nice, although I'm not quite as happy with them as I was with the Genesis cardboard protectors. The quality is very good - the thickness on the material is the same between the two different types of boxes. The Sega CD ones don't have a tab closure that you can open on the bottom, rather the bottom flaps lock closed and the opening is only at the top. I think it's a good arrangement.

The fit is where I'm not quite as pleased. I bought these to protect the Sega CD cardboard boxes which are a bit smaller than the hinged Sega CD cases. As such, I expected them to rattle about a bit. Unfortunately, they have a lot more room to move around than I would like. Even the hinged Sega CD case has a decent amount of breathing room in there. The Digital Pictures boxes actually fit almost perfectly - the protector is snug and nearly invisible. Perhaps he increased the size on them slightly since you got them Ryan.

All in all, I'm happy I got them, but I do wish they came in a size specific for the Sega CD cardboard boxes. I actually need to order about 10 more because I wasn't expecting the Digital Pictures boxes to fit so well. I'll post some pictures when I can.

  • Thread Necromancer says, "ARISE!"

So a while back I started this thread to compare sega box protectors, mostly for cardboard games. I'm still very pleased with the ones I got originally. Just resurrecting this because that same guy recently expanded his stock and set up a website:

I ordered some of his boxes for various types of CIB games I have (N64, Gameboy, etc.) and they are really top quality. The fit is damn near perfect on everything. The only exception are the Sega CD boxes - they're designed to fit Saturn and PS1 longboxes as well, so they have a little wiggle room along the top (3/16 of an inch or so). More wiggle room for the Sega CD cardboard boxes, but those are pretty specific.

Anyway, if you're in the market for game protectors, check these out - you won't be dissapointed.
  • All of my Genesis cardboard is in custom NES box protectors from Keep em Minty and I love them!! They look sexy and keep em minty! He has larger Genesis style which worked perfectly for Sonic and Knuckles a nice snug perfect fit. Sealed cardboard slide boxes will fit but it almost to tight so be careful but it does work and looks awesome. Sealed Fliptop boxes (EA ones are thinner so there fine) will not fit but will fit not sealed but it is very very tight, you have to be careful not to grind the edges. I almost have a complete cardboard set in these, just missing a few variants but once I'm as close to complete as I'm going to get I will post a pic of all my shinny cardboard in milestones it looks awesome!

    Buy these!!!
  • Every CIB I have is in a box protector from jimpoleshuk. I love the quality and the great customer service.
  • bumping this thread...

anybody have another solution for sealed cardboard box genesis/32x games? I bought some from jimpoleshuk but they are just too tight for my liking. I messaged him, but he said he probably didn't have anything else that would potentially work better.
  • There is a slightly larger Genesis size I believe he sells, it's more designed for clamshells, but would probably you the room you wanted for a sealed game.

I picked up some of these for my sealed games - work great:

Also, his N64 boxes work on the larger EA games pretty well:
