Make sure you guys read my response on page three. I agree with Thor on one point, it is obscure in references. That being said, this comic is intended for THIS community. He hasn't collected, so it wouldn't make sense to him in the first place. It would be like picking up a Turkish comic and trying to figure out the jokes by the pictures alone. You just can't do it, it's intentionally in another language, the language of the NES scene. Everyone who knows the scene, knows what I'm talking about. Anyone who doesn't won't have much of a clue, that's why I throw in lots of odd ball things so you can still laugh a bit if you don't know anything about NES collecting. It's funny, I knew this was probably going to happen, that's why I imagined this three-part comic the way I did. People should calm down by the next one. Maybe. This always happens in the 12+ years I've published Faegly in a variety of magazines, newspapers and so forth. There is always a dichotomy between people that love and hate it. Here are the facts about them:
Those Who Love It 1. Are intelligent. 2. Usually have some creative background (especially art). 3. Have a mechanism in their mouths and body that causes the jaw to open wide while their lungs and diaphram contract to release air in a distinct 'ha ha ha' pattern. 4. Like the drawrings.
Those Who Hate It 1. Think Baby Mama is a good movie.
slander - a malicious, false, and defamatory statement or report: a slander against his good name.
libel - defamation by written or printed words, pictures, or in any form other than by spoken words or gestures.
satire - the use of irony, sarcasm, ridicule, or the like, in exposing, denouncing, or deriding vice, folly, etc.
ONE must truly recognize and understand these words before posting is my thought. From the very definitions, I feel this falls under satire. Above all do your research before coming to a conclusion ... I must stress ... do your research.

I don't find your comic very funny, but this stuff here is a riot! Talk about your high horse...
There's a lot of positive stuff going on here at NA and, unfortunately, some negative stuff too. It just so happens that the majority of the time, a certain member (read: Stan) is at the center of all of the negativity.
I understand the need for free speech and the "down with censorship" mantra and yada yada yada, but seriously, why are we as a NES-collecting community publishing a comic by a self-proffessed hater of the "NES scene" that continually bashes the very NES-collecting community that the rest of us are trying to build? It boggles the mind of at least one little nerd...

Ant, who the hell cares about semantics. Much like the earlier posts in this thread on the subject, you're completely missing the point. Put away your dictionary and read the comic again and tell me how it's great for the scene...
Thus far it's been: how much people pay for SE (which is just a lame variant), screw variant collecting, how much people pay for Myriad (which is another lame variant), the VGA, collectors who care more about 'collecting' than history/programming/playing/etc., collectors who rip people off and this time collectors who get upset when they get ripped off but will buy something from someone as long as it is something they want.
Which are all fine, because they are general statements about groups of people. The problem comes when it turns into a personal attack against a specific person. The point about the hypocrisy of collectors could have been made just as well without including any one individual.
Question isn't whether Nick is good/bad, whether there's a legal right/wrong, or even if the comic is funny/stupid. The question is whether the site and community will accept published personal attacks in any form. Just because it is satire doesn't mean it is not insulting. So many claim DP is so terrible because of the member actions toward each other, and now it is being accepted right here. It isn't the size of the community, its how the active members choose the direction.
Back to the comic style, I didn't really notice a background color change until you mentioned it. It does help with so much other stuff being white already. After rereading all of the old ones the printed text instead of handwritten helps with readability. This month also looked visually better, was it just a better file format or less compression? When you are doing these for newspapers, does the style change for b/w?
well, there wasn't really any name calling in the comic, just subtle suggestion that only a few members would recognize. I do think you have to read it before you can argue against it but i do agree that since Nick didn't want his name in any part of it it shouldn't have been published.
Gimmick, nobody should have to go out of their way to request that their name not be used in a defamatory manor and then published in the eZine for 1300+ people to see. That's common sense. This was a personal attack by Stan which was published by the eZine staff, which shows that the eZine staff condones this type of behavior. It really shows a lot about the way the NA community is heading. You weren't here when NintendoAGE started but this place is really going down the shitter as it grows. NintendoAGE was 10 times better when it had 1/10th the members. Everybody used to contribute and help each other out but that doesn't happen anymore. At this point I'm bitter because even after all I've been through and done to regain my reputation, something like this occurs. But even if this was any other member, it would still be in very bad taste and say a lot about the direction this community is heading.
but nick's main point that no one should have to request it holds true. The part that disappointed me is that if someone else like batty or erik or even myself was the target, I don't think that comic gets published. So its unfair to nick for that reason.
I know if I was drawn as jabba the hut with games coming out from under my manboobs and pus spewing from my sores and it was emailed to 1300 people I wouldn't find it hilarious. I dunno. Maybe I wouldn't give a shit because I do think the comic is "unfunny" but still, that's just not the right thing to do IMO.
I'm a bit of an outsider, but IMHO, the comic is :
(a)- unfunny (b)- in poor taste (c)- terribly drawn (d)- not up to the standards of the rest of the 'Zine (e)- is so obscure in references, that unless you know the background of what the sam hill is going on (I still don't, after reading the comic and two threads related to the comic), it makes no sense, and probably works towards the alienation of newcomers
That said, it's not my 'Zine, and it's a free country.
I totally agreee.
Nick is actually one of my favorite members on this site, areally good guy.
Did you guys read my freaking response on PAGE THREE. I was told not to use his LAST NAME ONLY. If I had been told to leave out his forum name and first name I would have. I recently, finally, got my advanced batch converter and I've grown more accustomed to using CS. If you mean the drawings, no difference, because they're done by hand. And yes, the style does change. It depends on what I'm doing it for. I've done some 2K sports comics where I make fun of EA (on the request of my boss guy) and then I throw in some stuff to make fun of sports fans or sports in general. I pretty much center in on what seems to be wrong or silly in something and then blow it out of proportion. I may complain a lot, but none of you can say I've ever actually done anything wrong to you, stolen something, backed out on a deal, side bidded against you or anything. I just complain about stuff that shouldn't be around. This is what I mean:
Do you shop at Walgreens? I said this before, but in case you missed it, you shouldn't. Why? Recently, they swindled 35 million dollars from customers by pretending that generic drugs were brand-name. Kind of makes all of their commercials about how much they care totally inane. Would I shop there again? No, because you SHOULDN'T. The thing is, you don't HAVE TO, but you can if you want to. I just don't support bad business practices and a poor sense of ethics, that's my thing, and that's what this comic was about. If I was told to remove his FULL name I would have, but I was told only last name, so that bit isn't my fault. And if you read my freaking damn post on page three, you would have heard that in the third and final version of this particular story, Nick gets kind of redeemed, but there is a lesson to it. You have to wait for that.
And seroiously, guys, it's a comic. Is Nick a giant, obese, boneless man? No. Does he have little, teeny flapping arms? No. Who gives a shite. Get over yourselves, this is a freaking forum and we collect video games and play them at age 30. What's even more sad is you're all complaining about nothing and not discussing the interesting articles that were written.
but nick's main point that no one should have to request it holds true. The part that disappointed me is that if someone else like batty or erik or even myself was the target, I don't think that comic gets published. So its unfair to nick for that reason.

Ummm, didn't I make fun of you in the last one, Bronty? Guess you didn't catch that one.
I agree with Wolfsaq that you should ALWAYS get permission from such a directly satirized individual (if they are not a public figure). I'm guessing that wasn't done, and as such is inappropriate on those grounds alone.
I think it would be interesting to line up ALL the comics over the last year and see the evolution of more and more open disgust and disdain with specific people. I think Stan probably needs to take a step back, take a deep breathe, and reassess what he's trying to accomplish with these. I appreciate the effort that's going into making the comics, but keep them fun and light...they're comics!
Did you guys read my freaking response on PAGE THREE. I was told not to use his LAST NAME ONLY. If I had been told to leave out his forum name and first name I would have.
You shouldn't have to be told not to attack someone. Common courtesy.

The visually better was the amount of noise in the white areas around text and color borders, which is why I first thought compression. You can put Aug and Sept next to each other to see the difference there. Colors in the Sept also seem brighter, maybe because they are solid instead of fuzzy. Are you hand drawing with a tablet or scanning into the computer?

No, you didn't make fun of him personally. You made fun of a group of people that he may belong to. That's where the difference is.

Hi Stan,
I like your directness. I have nothing against you whatsoever, nor anyone else here at NA. It's just that the comic is a bit jarring in contrast to the overall presentation and content of the rest of the 'Zine IMHO. If anything, I'd suggest floating the comic somewhere directly on the NA site for people to click on if they want to read it. They wouldn't need to download a .PDF to see it (unless they wanted original quality I suppose), and it would deflate the dual problems of offending/depressing certain segments of the NA community (I see I'm not the only one who thinks this doesn't fit the 'Zine as a whole), or of alienating newcomers. When I read it, I was like WTF? Not a necessarily pro or con WTF, just a total WTF did I just read and why is it a part of this?
I'm very pro-expression and pro-art, and can acknowledge that just because I personally don't care for it doesn't mean that it doesn't have a place. I can be just as wrong as anyone else.
Oh, and I don't know what 'Baby Mama' is (how is babby formed?), but The Dark Knight kicks ass. That is all.
Not knowing anything about Nick whatsoever, I didn't even realize he was a person on this forum until this thread came up. He could have very easily been one of many people I've met so I found it to be more humorous than I usually do. Being that I'm not coming from a "forum regular" perspective... the cartoon in this issue didn't seem any different in it's tone of sarcasm than any of the previous strips I've seen. It was actually a bit funnier because I can relate to the characters... some of the previous strips were just a bit too much of an inside joke for me, perhaps. In my case, the contraversy surrounding this cartoon has made it more perverse and personal than the actual cartoon did at face value.
I agree with Zzzzzzzap. I say we put this to a vote to decide the fate of the comic. If the majority of people think the comic strip as a whole doesn't benefit the ezine, then we should defineatly consider removing it for the future. We want a publication that the masses will enjoy so let the masses decide.
but nick's main point that no one should have to request it holds true. The part that disappointed me is that if someone else like batty or erik or even myself was the target, I don't think that comic gets published. So its unfair to nick for that reason.

I guess I was too busy trying to find your magical sega collector land where everything is sunshine and lollipops to bother reading it
Bong has another point. I don't read all the articles, just those that interest me. You people are acting like when there's an accident. You're the ones on the other side of the highway slowing down because you want to take a look at the horror. Don't read it if you don't like it. And Thor, right on the head there, my humor tends to be absurd, that's one of the points of it. If you didn't get it, inside jokes aside, you probably weren't supposed to get anything other than not getting it. I already made fun of Nick in the first installment, so if I didn't get this kind of reaction the first time, what do you think I thought? I thought it wouldn't matter. In fact, he KNEW the comic was being made, the only thing he objected to was the usage of his name, which boils down to a lack of communication. He didn't once say anything to anyone, as far as I know, about not depicting HIM in anyway, just the usage of his name. In fact, why didn't he email me in the first place and say, 'hey, Stan, could you not make fun of me?' Guess what, morons, I WOULDN'T HAVE, because I have strong ethics. Just come up to me and ask, if you sit in the background whimpering and then ask a mod who makes a simple error in informing me what to do, suck it. Only the world of NES collecting is magical!

oh god, just shut it already. trying to listen to you reason is like fingernails on a blackboard. what are you, five? as in not old enough to know better unless you're told?
I will make fun of you in the next comic. The Nick beast will eat you and turn you into a screw variant.
This would actually be really funny, even if it weren't indicating any individual user(s) at all. The hobby is obscure enough on its own to be funny, and the stereotypes are pretty strong without names.
Maybe after the final one in this series I will have a poke fun at everyone even myself comic. Faegly will introduce some well-known members and lampoon them.
What are you, two? Must be, because you're talking a COMIC seriously.
at the end of the day, yes, its not that big a deal. You didn't do anything scandalous, murderous or illegal. Just something that was unfunny, and in poor taste showing poor judgement.
Wait till you see what I have in store for you... My mind, it brews with ideas of terror! You actually would probably laugh at what popped in my head, but you have to wait two months to see it.

Those Who Hate It
1. Think Baby Mama is a good movie.
Hi Stan,
I like your directness.
That is all.

that was a very nice thread.
but nick's main point that no one should have to request it holds true.
Ummm, didn't I make fun of you in the last one, Bronty? Guess you didn't catch that one.
I guess I was too busy trying to find your magical sega collector land where everything is sunshine and lollipops to bother reading it
He didn't once say anything to anyone, as far as I know, about not depicting HIM in anyway, just the usage of his name. In fact, why didn't he email me in the first place and say, 'hey, Stan, could you not make fun of me?' Guess what, morons, I WOULDN'T HAVE, because I have strong ethics.
oh god, just shut it already. trying to listen to you reason is like fingernails on a blackboard. what are you, five? as in not old enough to know better unless you're told?
I will make fun of you in the next comic. The Nick beast will eat you and turn you into a screw variant.
This would actually be really funny, even if it weren't indicating any individual user(s) at all. The hobby is obscure enough on its own to be funny, and the stereotypes are pretty strong without names.
What are you, two? Must be, because you're talking a COMIC seriously.
at the end of the day, yes, its not that big a deal. You didn't do anything scandalous, murderous or illegal. Just something that was unfunny, and in poor taste showing poor judgement.
