NES controller cleaning Q's

I've got my 2 original controllers and they do work, of course.  Not as greatly as they could though.

I actually did open them last month and I'm sure this was the first time in 18 years since they've seen the light of day.  I used lots of alcohol to get the stuff off of the rubber pieces and they looked pretty clean.

Is there anything more I can do?  A and B work fine.  Start and Select generally require some force to use.  My 2nd controller Start and Select require a LOT of force.  The D-pad seems to not like the down button at times.

Just my rant.

  • Be sure to clean the board too! Put some rubbing alcohol on a cotton ball so its moist, then scrub the black parts on the board. Do the same for the rubber parts but be careful not to rip them. It may take a few cotton balls but you should end with no dirty coming off. Diagonals on the d pad is the hardest part to get working.
  • bunnyboy is right -- the board needs cleaning as well, and that's what I did recently to get my controller to respond on the NWC game. I was scoring around 500K because I simply couldn't move the Tetris pieces fast enough. My first attempt after cleaning the controller board was 1.15 million! I actually use Weiman's and a Q-tip on the board's connectors and that worked like a champ.

  • Really?  I would've thought getting the board wet may do harm.  I'll look into it.
  • Hm, okay... I've got the controller open again. Are you talking about the black where the buttons correspond to? I attached an image of inside my controller before doing anything.

    Thanks

EDIT:  I got it to work better now.  I indeed just wiped off the black parts and don't need to use hard force on the start and select buttons
