Can somebody explain some IP stuff to me? If I have 4 computers, all in the same house (one for me, my father and each of my brother's), all using the same router/network. Do they all have the same IP? Or does each computer have its separate IP?
Hey Will(yum!), I'm no expert by far, but I'm pretty sure you are sharing the same IP between the computers. If I'm not mistaken (which I usually am!), the company you go through for Internet access gives your house an IP. If you set up a network within your house that connects to the Internet through the same provider, I _think_ you share the same IP (DNS, whatever the hell it is). Dain would be the man to explain further I think, but I'm pretty sure your IP will be read the same from other computers on the Internet.
Yeah, if the 4 computers in the house are all connected to the internet, they are sharing the same Internet IP. The way it works is you'll have a router in your house (or a computer sharing the internet, acting as a router) that assigns private IP address to each machine in the house, and routes traffic in and out of the house. To the outside world it looks like you're just 1 IP address, but the router will keep track of which machine on the house network asked for which page, and send it to the right machine as the data comes in. This is known as Network Address Translation (NAT).
