Launch Date, October 1985

Is there anyone out there who happened to buy an NES on its launch date, whether it was in NYC 1985, or anywhere else 1986? If so, tell your story. What was it like, do you still have that particular system?

  • Or, if most people here are like me and were about 9 years old when it launched, what about other older system (SNES, N64, etc.) launches? Im just trying to see if there was a similar hype like as with current gen systems. I dont imagine there were many shootings or robbings back in the day (hint hint PS3)
  • I had to save forever to get mine but then I was only 9 like you said. I ended up going to KayBee with money in hand to buy it and then I saw the deluxe set and decided to wait until I could afford that. I ended up selling a huge pile of my Garbage Pail Kids collection to put me over the top to buy the Deluxe set. I remember first getting it home too. I was supposed to go to watch the WWF or WCW that night and ended up staying home playing SMB for hours. I sold the original NES years and years ago along with my 75 or so original games I had back then but the funny thing is I still have the original ROB and all the original parts for it from my first Deluxe set way back when.

The side note to the story that has always ticked me off is the my little brother wanted one really bad too and my parents bought him one after they had refused to by me one. ARGH!!
  • Wow, thats a cool story! Except for your brother getting one without paying himself! Also, thats funny that you mention the Garbage Pail Kids! I loved those things, and recently bought a lot of those off Ebay as a part of my nostalgia trip! I never was able to buy things like that as a kid, so now its cool that we can still pick up things like that now! (especially the NES stuff of course)
  • I was 20 but didnt buy one till about 10 years ago. I never really paid much attention to nes until I played tetris at my brother in laws...
  • from what I can remember..... It was christmas of 1990 I believe and I was 4 turning 5 in march, (only reason I know how old I was was because of the house we were living in) My parents bought one for me and we hooked it up to our 50 inch big screen that we later found out you werent suposed too... Its funny how you can still remember bits and pieces of certain parts of your life from when you were that age... I can still remember seeing mario and thinking "wow"
  • I'm bringing back some buried posts, but it's only cause I'm new to the site.  My launch stories go like this:

NES - I remember there being some commercials on the TV for this video game system in the fall/winter.  The funny thing is, even watching the commercials, my interest level wasn't all that high and I never told my parents that I even wanted one for Christmas.  They ended up getting me a NES for Christmas and my life was changed since.

SNES - I had a subscription to Nintendo Power from the beginning, and even though there had been previews of the Super Famicon, I didn't think it related to me, so I never bothered to pay attention.  Sometime shortly before the SNES came out, they started showing off this new system in NP, and I finally realized that there was an impressive new machine coming out soon.  I talked my mom into driving me out to a Babbages inside a big Milwaukee mall about 40 miles away, and got one on the day it came out.  I played so much Super Mario World with my friend that night, even though I really didn't want to share.

N64 - This was the system I was the most excited about, after seeing all those 3D Mario screenshots.  I was sure to reserve one ahead of time.  The night before the actual launch, I received a call that the system was available.  At the time, I did pizza delivery and I had to work that night.  I was going crazy while working, knowing that my N64 was waiting for me on the other side of town.  The schedule had me as the first driver to leave when business slowed down, but we had a bunch of orders come in when it seemed like we were slowing down.  Unfortunately, I had to take a few more deliveries, and the store would be closing somewhat soon.  I think it was 8:45pm (store closing at 9pm) when I returned from my last delivery, and I ran into the store, clocked out and told the manager that I MUST LEAVE NOW!  image  I dashed across town, which is normally a 20 minute drive, but I easily did it in 15, speeding on the interstate.  When I got to the mall, I ran in, with my pizza hut uniform still on.  I rushed to the long hallway where the gamestore was located, and saw their gate halfway down.  Lucky for me, there were a couple customers still checking out, so I ducked under the gate, got my N64, and happily drove home.  Mario 64 was played until I couldn't keep my eyes open, and I believe that was a Friday night, so I had the whole weekend to enjoy it.

  • We got our NES in early 87', we got the last set with ROB, Duck Hunt, Gyromite, and the Zapper at our local K-Mart.  My older brother had been begging my dad for one for weeks/months, at the time I was only 5 so I really had no idea what it was.  The only reason we got one when we got one when we did was while in JC Penny's that day with our parents, my older brother found a wad of money in the women's dept.  Turns out there was exactly $50.00.  Well dad took that money and came up with the rest.  And yes, before we spent the $50 we check around JC Penny's and no one claimed to have lost any money.
