Anybody into Carpentry or Go?

Random combination I know. I love building stuff and I recently started playing Go, so I built my own Goban from scratch out of Maple and Cherry. I'm really pleased how it came out.

I have more pics of it and the whole process here:

Tell me what ya think. Anyone else make some sweet stuff?

Also check out the Tetris shelves I built:

  • That looks like a nice quality item!

I'm learning some carpentry as I remodel my house. Had to fabricate window sills, and other odds and ends.
  • Very nice, I have always liked building stuff from wood. Now I build and renovate houses. I started my carpentry apprenticeship a few years ago but have since been so busy I haven't completed it, Im sure I have enough hours just need to make the time to get into class and write the exams.
  • ^^^ If you ever want an expenses paid visit to coastal VA, let me know!

I'll hook you up in exchange for renovation help.
  • Maydogg, what Dan are you?
  • I'm not even good enough to be ranked. I'm still very much a beginner and I only play every now and then although I'd like to change that if I can find more time.
  • I do also like to build or repair stuff.

Me and friend made some "high end" speakers to a "low end" price. image

We designed the speakers in autocad and used a cnc mill to make all the pieces, we had to get a special designed milling tool to make the "waveguide" you see at the top (where the tweeter goes)

Some of you might say that we cheated because we used a cnc mill, but it was still a lot of work.

If I where to sell them to earn money, they wouldn't be cheap image

Next time I'll only make 2 speakers.

  • Those are some pretty speakers!
  • Maydogg I love your Tetris shelves. Anyone who didn't click the link, take a look.

I saw some shelves that gave me this idea in Target a few years ago, but I'm as clumsy with power tools image I can't believe someone actually did it! Tastefully done too, I'd have been tempted to paint the blocks different colors and it would have looked terrible image
  • The painted blocks might look good if you chose the right color palette.

I liked the tetris shelves, but didn't care for the aesthetic of using them for a computer desk.
  • I play Go. I may even be playing it locally today. Play online at KGS.

Thanks, and they sound very good too even with my crappy amplifier image

They are based on a recipe from zaphaudio.com, he has a lot of other diy speakers too.

  • Yeah i went to school for woodworking now i have a full time job in a cabinet shop
    heres one of my projects

  • ^^^ Do you have an interest in American Arts and Crafts movement stuff? (like Stickley, etc)

If so, I might be able to send you some commission work for my house...

  • at this point in time im extremely busy. Just moved into house, workin 50 plus hours. But at some point when i have more free time, sure. Some had mention to me about joining the wood workers guild or something like that. I just dont have time... yet.
  • I don't think I would be ready to commission anything for a few years. I'm just gauging your interest in the style. I wouldn't want someone to make something that wasn't a labor of love.

Right now, the wife and high are still in heavy renovation mode, so we have a little bit of time before we'll be looking to replace the dining room set, etc.
  • Alright cool. Yeah i love doing custom work. I hate making the same thing over and over like i do at work. Theres no skill in that. Those tables are a three piece set. Everyone that sees them loves them. I am very proud of those.
  • Cool. I just know that we'll need a new table, chairs, buffet, and china cabinet at some point within the next few years. We have an Art Deco set right now, but we're stripping paint that was put on it in the 50's/60's. Once we refinish it, it will probably go to some other family members since it doesn't really fit the motif of our current home. If you're still interested when the time comes, I would greatly prefer to give the work to someone I have some connection with, rather than random Joe.

Is KGS a good online site?

I enjoy Go, but no one in my area has a clue to what I'm talking about.

  • Gameboy: Those speakers are really cool. I've never used a CNC machine, but I have friends who have and I know a lot work goes into it just like any other project. Great work.

Fantomex: You're tables are amazing. I'm no where near that skilled, just kind of a weekend warrior. But I fully agree that making the same thing over and over gets really boring. I've actually made three sets of the Tetris shelves because some friends commissioned me for them, but I got very bored doing the same thing over again. I really like coming up with new projects. For instance, I'm rolling around the idea of table top shuffleboard around among other ideas, but they wont be for a while.

As far as KGS goes, I'll definately check out the site. I mostly just play at yahoo, but the people there can be really rude sometimes when you're a beginner.
