New Collector Advice

Hey everyone, I've recently considered collecting PS1 games. I'm more fond of the idea of not just buying bulk online, but instead looking in charity shops (Thrift stores if you're American) and boot sales (Flea markets), as well as asking friends to sell me theirs they may have in spare rooms/basements being unused.

I was just looking for some tips, what's valuable, what's not, rough prices I should pay, etc. I've heard that long boxes are worth a bit more that normal, is there anything else I should look out for?

I'm only going to be collecting games complete with manual and inlays, as well as minimal damage.

Thanks in advance.

  • Hi!

There are so many games that's its hard to really start at a point.

I mean picking up games from 10p - £1 complete you can't go wrong.

If your paying more than that then i'd go with the Final Fantasy, Resident Evil, Crash and Spyro games.

Obviously there are many more titles, however these will be the easiest to find and start with.

Its all down to trial and error and research.

I've been collecting for the PS2 on and off for the last 4 years and still make mistakes lol

You may find that if your lucky to find games for under 50p it maybe worth buying duplicates just to get an unbroken case.

Hope this helps as a starter.
  • Thanks for that mate. Very helpful.
  • Yeah, if you find any FF, RE, Crash, or Spyro game at a decent price, just grab it. Even if you've got it already, you might be able to sell it an make a profit.

JRPGs for the PS1 in general seems to be worth getting though, not just the FFs.

Long box PS1 games are American only, though. However, there are four games that came in cardboard cases, and those were the first Tekken game, Warhawk, Total NBA '97, and Mortal Kombat 3. However, these aren't necessarily more valuable - it's more just that they are a bit different than most other PS1 releases.

"The Misadventures of Tron Bonne" and "Blue's Clues - Blue's Big Musical" are two PAL titles that you should get no matter what, if you should be so lucky as to come across them in the wild.
  • You can even try to find Team Buddies, Kula World, Tombi, Castlevania SOTN, Legend of Dragoon and Vib-Ribbon at a possible affortable price, and even make alot of money aswell, which I of course did, after I bought Team Buddies so many months back for €3, and was worth anything, but too bad it's in really bad condition.
  • Did you have a PS1 back when you were younger? If so, the best way to begin is to remember what you played and loved back then. I think Xed once said that you can't collect anything you don't (or didn't) love. That's true. Forget which games are rare or expensive or high status. Find something you connect with emotionally, something that takes you back, reminds you why you want these games in the first place.

If this is your first time playing PS1 games, and your goal is collecting for the sake of having a collection (which is fine too), I reckon the best thing to do when you're beginning is start with a small, relatively achievable goal. Something like... collect all games in one series. Nothing huge and expensive, like Final Fantasy, but perhaps something like the Resident Evil series. Each one should cost you about £5. Don't rush, research what you're looking for, watch eBay for a while to pick up a feel for how much you should expect to pay, find the right copy somewhere and... bam. Then, once you have those games, goal reached. Pick a new one, a slightly larger one. And so on.

tl;dr version: Buy games you love, or don't.
  • Yeah, I played a lot of PS1 back in the day, there's a lot of a games I'm interested in playing again for nostalgic value. I'm interested in knowing some of the rares to look out for to get the best deals - if I'm paying £50p-£1 per game, but see a very valuable game for £5, I know it's a good deal.

Cheers for the help guys, with those posts plus a lot of Googling and searching on Amazon and eBay I've got a rough idea of where to begin. My favourite PS1 game is on Namco Museum, so I think I'll complete that series first.
