There's a middle-aged man talking and crying to himself in front of me in the computer lab...

No, really.  Rocking back and forth and everything.

I both pity and fear him.  It is a strange dichotomy that will make me wait an additional 5 minutes before signing off and heading into the underground parking garage to my car.

  • Talk to him, its your duty.
  • Mostly, I tend to treat them like they're T-rexes. If I don't move, they won't see me.
  • "Mostly" they come out at night... mostly...
  • Better hope its not a Velociraptor
  • Thats freaky.

    AHHH- firmative.

  • Game over man, game over!
  • Yay I knew someone would pick up on my making fun of Nes Guy's "Mostly"... good work Aaron!
  • Well, I survived. Dude started laughing quite hysterically, got up, looked around, and walked out of the lab. I watched another 5 tick by on the clock, then went to my car. I really need to stop going to the lab after 11pm.

And I don't get the "Mostly" joke. It's a word in my vernacular, but clearly you are referencing something.
  • "Aliens". Watch it.
  • I did. Wasn't a big fan, actually. I like 1 and 3 the best; much creepier. 2 was almost a straight up action movie.
  • Seriously a reference to one of the best Sci FI movies of ALL TIME hands down and this coming from the guy with Picard as an Avatar and Star Trek on in the background on your pic in the we want to see your Ugly Mug thread? WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

You just pooped on my soul.
  • Really... then he wiped with mine... so sad right now... ALIENS was the best!! I can watch that movie over and over and never get tired of it.
  • As long as we can all agree that "Resurrection" was awful...

im not an aliens fan AT ALL. sigourney weaver makes me want to vomit. i cant watch her. predator is fine, but no sigourney!

  • Aliens is my favorite... Alien comes in 2nd. After that... meh... I like the creatures so I will always give them a watch. But yes 3 and 4 were so far away from 1 and 2.
  • i like the creatures, but i need the actress to be at least somewhat attractive (or just a good actress). hell, i would rather watch the golden girls than watch something with sigourney in it!
  • Haha. Sigourney was hot in 1979, though image And we can't forget Vasquez in Aliens!

I'd have to flip a coin between 1 and 2. They're completely different genres. One is sci-fi horror and the other is sci-fi action. I guess at the core of it, there is more to like about Aliens (2), so that would usually get my vote out of the series.

I'll be honest that as ridiculous as a few scenes were in Resurrection, I prefer it to the 3rd movie.
  • I agree that Resurrection sucked ass, as did both AvP movies (haven't even seen 2 yet, I heard it was so horrible). See, I've had this argument with a LOT of people. Alien bordered on a horror movie, it was that intense when people saw it in '79. It was slow, methodical, dramatic. Alien took its time to make you believe the story, care about the characters, and the Alien doesn't even show up until you're well into the movie. Aliens, on the other hand, spends its two hours blowing the shit out of the everything; that's not a bad thing, but it just wasn't a consistant follow-up to the first movie.
  • Yes but can we not agree that the 3 best episodes of STNG were "Yesterday's Enterprise" and "The Best of Both Worlds" Part 1 and 2. And seriously there is no other answer as those are the best episodes. And yet those were the best fighting most action packed episodes of STNG. Enterprise C and D fighting along side each other against the Klingon's and of course Locutus of Borg. Ah STNG... good times! So is STNG any less Sci Fi because the best episodes are Action Packed Enterprice kicking ass?
  • Man, I loved those episodes!

nesguy - they're totally different because of the two radically different directors. Ridley Scott is a master of his craft, and was at the top of his game in the late 70's/early 80's. He's the master of setting, mood, and a living environment. James Cameron also made great movies in the 80's before he picked up the suck with Titanic, but he went big with Aliens and it worked well. And great casting helped that one too. Every character was believable.
  • Ok, I'm not saying that action = bad sci-fi image I think First Contact is the best Star Trek movie, and it's full of action. What I'm saying is that if ST:TNG had followed up the original series as a WB teen drama, everyone would have been pissed; it's a switching of a previously defined format. I know that Cameron can do the slow, interesting format, because he did The Abyss. That was essentially Alien part Underwater. In fact, if they had called it Alien 2, The Abyss, I would have been thrilled! Aliens as it stands just didn't live up to the expectations established in Alien as a slow, methodical sci-fi suspense movie. It went straight to the pop-whiz-bang shoot 'em up, and didn't let go for over an hour in that last fight sequence. Good action movie? Sure. Good sequel to Alien? Hell no.

And see, while I agree that those are fantastic episodes, I much prefer Chain of Command (parts 1 and 2) and Time's Arrow (1 & 2) over Yesterday's Enterprise. Of course Best of Both Worlds are the best episodes of the show. But with Chain of Command, not only does it pay homage to the classic sci-fi epic 1984, but it goes into the depths of the human psyche, which is what all good sci-fi is about: the limits of mankind.
  • I liked Cause and Effect, The Inner Light, Tapestry and Chain of Command (part 2 only). I actually rank First Contact kind of low on the TNG movie totem because of the focus on action. While it was great sci-fi, and when Trek DOES choose to go that route they generally do a good job with it, I don't think it's exemplary of the show or the actors' individual talents. Note three of those episodes are Patrick Stewart episodes though image I do respect BoBW and Yesterday's Enterprise and they're a fun watch though, absolutely.

I actually think upon seeing them multiple times, Insurrection is my favorite of the four TNG movies. They're all good (Except generations) in their own ways. With the exception of the basic flaw of corruption creeping into Starfleet on the human side (Roddenberry would NEVER have approved that, everytime that happened under his watch it was changelings or bluegills) it was really well done, the characters were at their BEST and the special effects were fun.

Nemesis was too much of a wrap-up (cute scenes, but a LOT of sendoff time between the wedding and various events at the end - don't wanna spoil) and First Contact was ... well, very very corny at parts. I.e. - most of data's lines, Patrick Stewart's action sequence in a wifebeater, and a drunken Troi. Nemesis easily had the best battle scene of the TNG movies though, even better than the First Contact assault on the borg ship at Earth.

    THERE ARE FOUR LIGHTS!!!
  • Mmm, good episodes you mention, too. Interesting your pick of Insurrection as the best, although given your reasoning I see why. I HATED it the first time I saw it, mostly due to the fact that is was a crappy follow-up to First Contact (sounds just like another discussion I heard recently image ). On repeat viewings, which took me a long time to get around to, it has very steadily grown on me, and I definately put it second behind FC on my list. True, FC had a lot of action, but we really got to see the darker side of Picard in that movie, something which was so rare in the show. One of my favorite parts, though, is when they first see the Phoenix, and Picard goes up and touches it. The sense of wonder on his face and the explanation given Data were fantastic; I thought it sort of exemplified best the whole "Boldly going" and exploring thing, and what the payoff for that truly is for these characters. And I loved the cheesy lines!
