You might want to find an easier process to make it take less time.  I'm sure there's a lot of ways you could cut down on the amount of time needed to pop these things out.  If I have all necessary parts sitting around I can pop out a fully pimped av famicom over a weekend.  I respect such a low price for something that takes so much time and effort.  Really though does it need to be made out of fiberglass?  I'm sure the weight of plastic wouldn't be so terrible.
  • Impressive and cheap! Like others have said, the D-Pad is a pretty big deal to leave out. I'm not much of an n64 lover (mainly because I loathe the controller), but this is definitely a pretty sick console -> portable conversion.

The handlebar thing makes me imagine someone playing Mario Kart and steering the handheld to take corners in the game haha.

    I do have some questions:

Is there a video out option if you wanted to hook it up to a TV?

Would it be possible to move the controller buttons and joystick to under the screen? I can see the d-pad fitting in nicely right under the stick, but if that would take some serious modification of cutting the pcb's and such, might not be worth it?

The Z button... to me, it would seem more comfortable / appropriate on the right side where the index finger would rest. Maybe that's just my preference? Idk, but maybe having one on each side so the user can choose which one to use would be a better option.

Over all, awesome work. Fiberglass is a pain to work with lol
  • This is my first ever post... i want to get hold of one of these portable N64's

does anyone know who else makes them? this is an very old thread so maybe there are newer ones now? i would literally be the envy of my friends for having one of these!

sorry for digging up an old thread.

First off, welcome to NintendoAge, if you love Nintendo systems and games, you've come to the right place.

Secondly, there's not really anyone else who makes them like this. Most portables you see around the net are custom-built pieces by a slew of talented shopnuts. With that, most are one-offs, but OP has said that he was looking into injection molds for production, which could mean that he had/has plans to be able to sell kits.

If you really want one, there's a few things you can do. One of them would be to scour eBay/craigslist/<enter auctionwebsite here> for portables and try and win an auction. Another would be to specifically ask the owner (in this case OP) if he has any inclination of selling his/hers. And finally, perhaps the most fun of all, would be to try and build one yourself.

    Hope this helps

Slightly off-topic, but if your cartridge doesn't work, you could try cleaning the contacts on the edge connector.. always works for me.

    On-topic:

I'd love to try and make a few portables, but I lack knowledge in the electronics department. All I'm good at (for now) is programming, which doesn't help much.
  • Also this device could use a method of patching through the controller pack port

I myself Couldn't see using this without a DPad and that.

I want to play Pokemon Stadium Dodrio Tower on the go

I also want to race as my "Juice man" custom car in penny racers which only saves to the controller pack.

But those are Minor criticism's of an overly well done device.

You could theoretically even eliminate them by having a small switch above that controller port which changes the port that it is mapped to, Thus the external controller can host the control pack accessory or Transfer pack etc etc.

and can be used for the Dpad just have it so the switch disables the internal controls if set to position 1

    Huzzah Eyeball to the rescue.
